(More customer reviews)I was attracted to the LG Chocolate for many of the same reasons that everyone else here was: it's sleek and sexy, thin enough to comfortably sit in my pocket, and pretty cheap for a fashionable phone. Upon acquiring it however, I found it had several serious glitches.
My previous phone was a Sony Ericsson w600i (AT&T), and the one before that was a Sony Ericsson T616. Both of these phones were incredibly sturdy, fashionable, reliable, intuitive, and overall just really good phones. All the menus were simple, as brief as possible, and plenty customizable. All the necessities like call quality, battery life, longevity, and ease of use were top notch. However, I had to switch to Verizon when my contract expired because AT&T does a really poor job of covering the area I now live in. It deeply saddened me that Verizon did not offer any Sony Ericsson phones.
In any case, onto the Chocolate. My first big complaint about the Chocolate is the touch keypad. This sounds like a good, hip idea in theory, but in practice it brings about dozens of curses and violent tendencies. When trying to adjust the volume, you hit it with your thumb. During calls, if you dial numbers on the keypad (such as in your voicemail), you unlock the touch pad and when the phone touches your face, you access menus and sometimes even mute the phone. Then the pad locks up, and you're forced to unlock the keys and unmute the phone, all while your contact on the other end goes, "Hello? Can you hear me?"
In addition to the poorly conceptualized keypad, the menus are long and clunky. On my old phones, you could select an item (like, Turn Alarm Off/On), and simply push the D-Pad left or right to turn it off. Instead, on the Chocolate, you must select the text box, hit "Set", change the setting to On or Off, hit "Save", wait for the cute animated checkbox to tell you whether or not it's now on/off, and then return the previous menu. Do this enough times while just trying to accomplish a simple task, and pretty soon you'll be fed up with needless confirmations.
Now, the stupid menus I can't get around. However, the touchpad thing is a bit better now. If I dial the sensitivity down to "low", which is still plenty sensitive to detect a deliberate button push, the accidental inputs aren't that much of a problem. In terms of accidental face inputs (which were INCREDIBLY frustrating), I found that if you select the numbers, hold the phone away from your face for about 2 seconds to wait for the touchpad to lock, then put the phone to your face, they don't really happen. Kind of a pain, yes, but it's just one of those things you have to learn to do, like ducking your head when you get in your car so you don't hit that annoying handle every time.
Thanks to the good build quality, great looks, excellent battery life, and good call quality, I gave this phone 3 stars. It lost points for the illconceived touchpad, annoying menus, and a slider mechanism which seems like it will fail sometime before 2 years are up.

Slimmer, lighter and sweeter than ever, LG updates its Chocolate slider phone to the VX8550 with improvements including a new metal navigation wheel (which traces your finger's movement with a small light), vibrating touch keypad, and the ability to run the music player in the background while using the other features of the phone. But many of the much vaunted features of the original Chocolate remain: silky-smooth slider design support for V Cast Music, an integrated music/video player, a 1.3 megapixel camera/camcorder, stereo Bluetooth capabilities, and a microSD memory slot for up to 4 GB of storage. In addition to Verizon's V Cast Music feature, this phone is also enabled with the Get It Now service, which allows you to easily download ringtones, games, and applications. Imaging and Entertainment The Chocolate's is a 1.3-megapixel digital camera features a flash, as well as 2x digital zoom, self-timer, night-mode functions, and brightness and white balance controls. Other features include an in-phone image editor (zoom, rotate, crop) and a mirror for self-portrait capability. The camera can also capture video clips--30 seconds for sending and up to 1 hour for saving to memory card--at a 176 x 144-pixel resolution. It's compatible with playing MP3, 3GP, and 3G2 video formats, and you can set a video as your screen's wallpaper (as long as it's under 5 MB in size).
A built-in music player with a dedicated music key for easy access, stereo speakers and an equalizer, MP3 and WMA playback, and the ability to hide the music player while still allowing the music to play on in the background. You can create and manage playlists right on the phone, as well as synchronize music between the Chocolate and your PC (using an optional USB cable and connecting with Windows Media Player 10 or higher). You can also take advantage of the Chocolate's Bluetooth wireless headset capability, allowing you to hook up a pair of Bluetooth stereo headphones.
Design The phone features a seriously attractive open-faced design with an internal antenna and a vibrant 240 x 320 pixel, 262,000-color TFT/TFD display. A touch sensor click wheel, similar to iPod, and sliding design set the phone apart stylistically. Opening the slider reveals a numeric keypad, as well as the 1.3-megapixel camera and LED flash, which are housed on the rear of the phone. The new navigation wheel with Trace Motion Light allows for easy navigation through phone functions, as well as quick and simple functionality while browsing music and videos. The touch keypad provides an improved feel for quicker input.
Calling Features The Chocolate boasts powerful calling functions, such as speaker independent voice dialing, which makes it easy to call contacts by simply saying their names. No prior voice training is required and you can even speak individual digits to the phone for quick dialing of numbers you know by heart. And because the Chocolate is Bluetooth enabled, wireless headsets can be configured with the phone for total handsfree operation. You can save up to 20 Bluetooth pairings, and it supports the following Bluetooth profiles: headset, hands-free, dial-up networking, advanced audio distribution, phone book access, basic printing, object push for vCard and vCalendar (accessories sold separately), file transfer, and basic imaging.
The Chocolate's internal memory can hold up to 1000 contacts for quick access to email addresses and phone numbers. Each contact can store up to five numbers and two email addresses. The phone lets you easily assign pictures as well as ringtones to your most common callers. In addition to vibrating alerts, the phone supports polyphonic ringtones, and a number of ringtones come preloaded on the phone and more ringtones can be downloaded from Verizon's Get It Now service. Lastly, the Chocolate's GPS location technology pinpoints your exact location when you dial 911.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools The phone's support for multimedia messaging means that text, photos, video and audio can be sent with ease (Verizon messaging charges apply). When used in combination with the Chocolate's built-in camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. There's also a built-in web browser for downloads and mobile web browsing. Verizon's optional Mobile Web 2.0 package allows you to read and send emails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. You can check your email, trade stocks online, compare prices while shopping, access flight information, get movie listings and find directions to the theater. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.
With support for the EV-DO high-speed data standard, the Chocolate is fully compatible with Verizon's V Cast service. With V Cast music, your phone is a music player, letting you jam out wherever you are. It's also a music store, and you can download songs instantly to your phone. Save your songs to a memory card with a capacity that's right for you. You can even pause to take a call without missing a beat. You can also download and stream high-quality video--get the latest Accuweather forecast delivered right to your handset, or stream CNN news headlines. ESPN sports updates, entertainment news from E!, and even Sesame Street content for the kids. V Cast also serves as a portal for enhanced 3D games, making it possible to have more fun with a new breed of realistic games.
A number of handy software tools are bundled with the Chocolate including a voice memo recorder that can record calls, a calculator, a calendar, and an alarm clock. You can even set the alarm to wake you to your favorite music. Also included with the Chocolate is Verizon's VG Navigator software, which allows you to get real-time, turn-by-turn audible directions as you're driving.
Vital Statistics The LG VX8550 Chocolate weighs 3.24 ounces and measures 3.85 x 1.87 x .67 inches. (More customer reviews)The Black RAZR V3 is the wireless phone I have always wanted. It's that simple.
Before having bought mine, I would read commentary from people who would cite all of the features the RAZR doesn't have: "I could buy the (insert model number of cheaper, but still expensive phone which does 100 different things--all of them poorly) and get more for a lot less money." When I would research a model recommended by these self-proclaimed gadget freaks, I'd find that it's dimensions make keeping it in a pocket an awkward and uncomfortable proposition; I'd find that the pictures it takes are not nearly of comparable quality to those taken by even a modest digital camera; I'd find that the lo-res video it can shoot serves no practical purpose; I'd find that web-browsing, game-playing, Instant messaging, streaming television content, all suck up battery-life and ultimately make the device useless for the unlikely purpose of placing and taking phone calls; I'd find that the phone casing is composed of cheap and flimsy plastics which make me wonder how long it wll last; I'd find that little attention had been paid to how the phone's design will contribute to, or detract from, user comfort. After my investigation, I concluded that for all the money I would save by buying "Phone X" over buying a RAZR, I would still have paid hundreds too much for a filmsy hunk of cutting-edge technojunk. (Don't take my word for it. Look around on the Net for comments about the RAZR around the time of its inroduction and see the recommendations from consumers that people choose the Motorola V600 instead. Then look at the consumer reviews of the V600 on this site.)
The RAZR has a camera, a web-browser, Instant messaging capability, and a whole array of other features all of which are listed in the product description. To the extent that the RAZR does these things adequately I will offer little, if any, comment--mainly because I don't care about them. That to which I can and will attest is that the RAZR exceeds my expectation on how it serves AS A PHONE.
Using my own criteria, a wireless phone should draw and hold a signal; It's earpiece should deliver clear sound at a volume which can compete with background noise; it's mouthpiece should pick up the users voice clearly; it should be compact enough to allow for placement in clothing pockets without creating prominent bulges; it should be solidly built out of durable materials which are not prone to scratching; it should have decent battery life. And yes, anything for which I pay hundreds of dollars should be designed with aesthetics in mind: there are far too many wireless phones which look like disposable children's toys, or like awkward, all-purpose, button-riddled gadgets.
Using the above criteria, the RAZR V3, particularly the Black model, is close to perfect. The sound from the ear piece could certainly be louder, but I have yet to have a caller's voice drowned out by the noise of busy New York City streets. The people to whom I'm speaking have reported to have heard my voice loudly and clearly. Battery life could be longer, but then, the same could be said about many wireless phones which are bulkier and have larger batteries. I have used the phone on both T-Mobile and Cingular networks and found that it draws a strong signal on both; it has never dropped a call. I found the speaker phone to be loud and clear despite my expectations to the contrary. Is the much-lamented Motorola phone book program clunky? Yes it is. But the RAZR's voice-dialing works well, making it possible to avoid scrolling through the phone book if one hates it that much.
I'll try to boil it down with a somewhat clumsy analogy: Complaining that the RAZR doesn't do enough in the way of tech-gimmicks to justify its price (which is considerably lower that it was when it was introduced) is like complaining that an exotic sports car isn't worth the money because it doesn't have a cup holder, a GPS system, and DVD player like the Minivan you've been looking to buy. That ridiculousness ignores the engineering that makes the sports car a superior performer on the road, and the attention put toward making it sleek and aesthetically pleasing. The RAZR's performance has made concern over signal strength a thing of the past. and its design is unmatched--not just for it's ultra-compactness, but for the solidity of it's build. That makes it worth what I paid for it. And my inability to speak to the quality of other phones on the market put them out of consideration.
Besides, as they say, black is beautiful.
That the RAZR cannot serve as a business-card scanner doesn't trouble me. For those who need to have whichever feature-laden mobile gadget is most desired at the moment, buy a Samsung MM-A800, clip it on you belt (you'll need to), and earn yourself the right to say your phone can do just about everything--poorly.

Motorola SLVR L2 Phone (AT&T) Review

(More customer reviews)This phone was an upgrade from my Nokia 6010 (a very reliable phone, but that time had passed by).
I wanted a speakerphone to avoid carrying the wired earpiece the 6010 required. I wanted Bluetooth to take advantage of my Palm TX PDA with a huge contact list.
The build is mainly plastic. It's so light, I can barely feel it in my pocket. So thin, I don't think it could withstand much of a fall (though I haven't tried yet).
The keypad is small, and if you're not comfortable with alot of fingernail dialing, I would look elsewhere.
The screen is very nice, large relative the size of the phone, easily readable in daylight.
The Bluetooth works well, I can dial using my Palm TX PDA. Transferring records from the PDA or PC does take time, as each individual record has to be "accepted" one at a time by the L2. You can transfer video, pictures, music via Bluetooth fairly easily from a PC.
The speaker is acceptably loud, and audible over traffic if you are in a car. The volume dialing is only "up," so you have to cycle through 7 volume settings to get to the lowest setting again.
Call quality is equal to my Nokia 6010, reception slightly worse, but not significantly. Battery life is 24-36 hours with standby/frequent calls/heavy Bluetooth/speaker use.
The address book does have an irritating feature of making each phone/fax/email entry a separate listing, which results in one name being listed several times.
A good phone for cellphone "bottom-feeders" such as myself looking for a simple phone with speaker and Bluetooth and not much else.

My teen rarely uses his phone, but it gets the job done and "never" needs charging. I charged the new Marbl and left it unused and closed overnight and in the morning the battery was low and the phone could not be used. I thought about exchanging the phone until I saw all the CNET reviews complaining about lousy battery life. I returned the Marbl and will wait till something better comes along.

TMOBILE SAMSUNG T809 SPRUCE PHONE Review

(More customer reviews)I've had Nokia, Sony-Ericsson, and Motorola phones - and each has had features that I found to be incredibly useful. I've heard a lot about Samsung phones in the international community and I was excited when I saw that T-Mobile began offering this phone. I was hoping it would be a combination of all that I ever wanted in a phone - but I was disappointed.
To begin with, this phone looks great. Well-built, sturdy, and with a high-gloss finish that screams class it received many compliments every time I brought it out. The screen is bright and delivers detailed images and video. By far, this is the nicest screen I've seen on any portable product - including the iPod Video. It slides open and closes smoothly, and the keypad it reveals is backlit and easy to see in the dark. As an MP3 player, it delivers crisper sound than I heard from my Nokia 6600. The Bluetooth worked flawlessly and instanly hooked up with my other phones and my laptop. The camera is as good as any other cell phone camera that promises 1.3MP. In short, what this phone promised ... it delivered.
However, I was disappointed mainly because it appeared that the user interface was not as cleverly designed as the physical package. The phonebook only allows three phone entries per name. Looking up names, you can only search by typing the first letters of the last name. For example, suppose you have an entry for "John Smith" - if you use the search feature and type in "Jo" it will NOT list all the Johns. You have to search for "Sm..". Why? Sure you can sort the phone by either the first or last name, but you can only search using one or the other. Not both. My Nokia and Ericsson could do both. Another phonebook problem - suppose you've just called someone's home and now you want to call their cell. You have to start the search over. It doesn't remember your last search.
Headset works fine. But if you have the headset on and the phone rings, you don't hear the ring through the earpiece. The phone rings normally and you activate the call by pressing the button on the headset. That sort of negates the purpose. You can listen to MP3s using the headset, but since the headset uses a proprietary connector, you can't use your "good" headphones. Maybe when the phone becomes more popular, adapters to standard headphones will be made.
The keys under the screen aren't soft - meaning they cannot be reassigned. The left button opens the menu and the right buttom opens the phonebook. My Nokia let me reassign these keys - so, because I use SMS a lot, I could assign one key to open up the message center.
Speaking of keys - the entire keypad is nearly flat. This makes it hard to "feel" for a key (while driving for example). I don't have particularly large fingers, but I found myself making a lot of mistakes.
Another irritating problem - each menu option has a submenu but the submenus have no relation to one another. (This is a hard one to explain). For example, you are going through your list of audio files. You want to delete one. You click "Options" and you get a submenu of seven items. #6 is "Delete". You can scroll down, but it is faster to just type in the number 6 as a shortcut. So far so good. Now, you are going through your text messages. You want to delete one. The submenu shows the delete as #7. You want to delete a phonebook entry, the delete is #4 in the submenu. No consistency makes it very hard to use shortcuts. All my prior phones had a dedicated "Clear" button that can be used anywhere - but if the people at Samsung don't want to "waste" a button, they should've at least made the submenus more consistent.
By the way, everytime you delete something it asks you if you want to delete "All or Selected" - this is an unnecessary step.
You can listen to MP3s, but you can't use them as ringtones unless they are converted to 3gp. This is as easy as changing the extention from .mp3 to .3gp on your computer before uploading the song (via bluetooth or USB). Why the extra step?
Battery life is terrible. As expected, using the MP3/video player causes a serious drain on your power. One thing I found weird - after listening to MP3s on the phone during a 1-hour flight, the phone became quite warm. I'm not sure if this will affect the phone's general life-span.
The beautiful case looks shiny and great - but it smudges really easily. If you aren't using a headset and you have to press this phone to your ear, be prepared for major smudgeness - especially after a long phone call.
Another weird thing - you can only use the supplied charger to charge this phone. Even if you have another Samsung phone, you can't use another phone's charger. All my Nokia phones used the same charger.
I ended up returning the phone on the last day of my 14-day trial period. It just didn't deliver what I needed, and the annoyances were just too much for me. I am still waiting for the perfect phone - one that combines the best features of all the other phones. I want the appearance of this Samsung (I love the way it looks and feels), but I want the features in all the other phones. I also want it to use standard plugs.

(More customer reviews)I've had my Chocolate for 2 weeks now, and other than getting a bum battery the first time around (which Verizon replaced without any problem), I've had no issues with it. Sure, it took some training to get used to the touch pad and scroll wheel, but now that I've played around with it, it's easy - just a slight tap is all it takes. I've also not had the problem of my face bumping the touch pad during a call...but I also noticed that my phone locks the touchpad during a call.
I've made several calls on my Chocolate and the call clarity is excellent - it sounds like the person is right in the other room. I've not had any problems with dropped calls, either, with the exception of the known "dead" areas around where we live. Battery life has been pretty good - with a good battery and regular usage, I can get about 4 days in between charges (the bad battery was only getting me 2 days...I knew that had to be a problem).
The camera quality is pretty good for a camera phone. The images are quite a bit more clear than on my old phone (an LG VX8100) even though they both have 1.3 megapixels. The camera also comes with quite a few options, from photo colors (black and white, sepia, etc.) to zoom to different "shutter" noises (click, "say cheese", etc.) I haven't yet used the video.
I also haven't had a chance to use the mp3 player feature yet. I did get a USB cable in order to sync music, but you can also move music files over to a microSD card in order to play music on the phone. I've also downloaded a free program that will allow me to use my music files as ringtones and plan to do so when I get a chance.
So far, I'm really enjoying my Chocolate. It's a great phone and has lots of fun features. It's not 100% perfect - nothing is - and has some things that I might do a little differently. But the many pro's far outweigh the few "could be a bit different" things, at least in my opinion. To sum it up - I would recommend a Chocolate to anyone who wants a gadgety phone.

The volume from the ear piece is not the quality I have come to expect from original accessories. The sound of the mic according to my wife is distant. Again not the quality of an original in my opinion. I have browsed the inside of the phone. I am a long time motorolla user so it was very familiar. I have a plantronics bluetooth in the US and when I get home I will try it with the phone.

Since I was looking for a phone with just a few more features than the V3, I opted for the V3xx. I must say that I like it. I especially like the voice commands (Name Dial to select a phone book entry, Digit Dial to say the numbers that should be dialed, Voicemail, and a few others). Though it is not the rugged version, I have dropped it several times with no issues. The bluetooth functions work flawlessly and the speakerphone of good also.
There was one thing that I was disappointed about and that was the lack of games (there are none) that came standard on the phone. Of course I can add them to the phone, but I was expectin at least a couple to be standard and preloaded.

Motorola W259 Black with Consumer Cellular Service (No Contract) Review

(More customer reviews)I am a bit of an extreme smartphone user and use the Apple iPhone 4 for most of my calling. But when I needed to evaluate something simple and easy for my Mom to use (a less expensive alternative to the Jitterbug), I opted to look into this Consumer Cellular phone and plan.
The phone is as you would expect it to be - extremely basic. While there is the ability to text message and add addresses and play FM radio (with the right earpiece which the box does not come with), this phone is great for the basic of the basic. You want a phone (perhaps a second number) and you need it for travel or emergencies or you, like me, want to make sure that your parent has a phone on them so that they can be reached.
I like the Consumer Cellular plans and I especially like the "senior friendly" phones. This phone could be senior friendly except that the buttons are not differentiated enough and they sit a bit more flush to the keypad. They are well lit though and that helps a lot. This phone is light and comfortable and actually ALMOST feels like a toy. It almost feels a bit disposable ... at this price I think that you have that option.
The $35.00 that you'll be paying for this phone seems to be for the activation fee through Consumer Cellular. This company is definitely going after a senior market offering an AARP discount on their plans. I can get my Mom 200 minutes a month without having to worry about buying refills with a Tracfone or any of those other phones. I definitely like the concept of Consumer Cellular and if you need a basic phone and basic service, this is definitely worth your while.
Regarding this particular phone, the battery life on it is amazing. Don't expect anything too "smart" about it. It's a basic Motorola flip phone. It's lightweight and can be easily thrown in a pocket or purse. There are no holsters, straps or cases included in the box. You get a phone and a charger. Simple, easy to use and a nice charge. The Consumer Cellular website even offers accessories to AARP members at 30% off.
At a time when less is more and if you are not the type of consumer who needs a Blackberry or iPhone and you just want a plain and simple cell phone ... this is a great option for you. I have no complaints with coverage or call quality.
The interface on this Moto phone is interactive and intuitive. Making calls is easy and the keypad numbers are large and well lit. The only problem I noticed that my Mom had with it (with arthritic hands) was getting a finger on the keypad and knowing she hit the right number. If I could choose a particular phone again with her in mind using Consumer Cellular it would be the Doro 410 Black Phone with Consumer Cellular Service (No Contract). This has a keypad that is more easily accessible if dexterity is an issue at all.
For the basic of the most basic, this phone and Consumer Cellular offer a great option.

(More customer reviews)Bought this item thinking its the international version and I was sent the US version with cingular logo on it. as you can see the discription of the item does not say its US version and, by the frequencies mention, it should be international version. I email the merchant and he says I should keep it and he would not take it back as he beleives that if it is sold in the US then it should be assumed that it is a US version despite what the it says. Called the amazon customer service to start the A-Z claim. the merchant immidiately ail me back saying he will take it back and sent me his address. I sent it bac with USPS with tracking only. 2 days later amazon customer service emails me saying the seller is willing to take it back and to send it with signature confirmation and insurance. But it was too late by then. the item was sent and per the tracking it was received. The seller claims he never received. what a scheme! Maazon wont process the claim as there is no signature confirmation!
A little interesting note is...
The sellers original name is apparently Muljadi Kasman. Wonder why he calls his company mike cellular?!

Nokia 2660 Unlocked Cell Phone with Bluetooth - US Warranty - Black/Silver Review

(More customer reviews)I wanted a basic clamshell phone WITHOUT a camera and all the bells and whistles, but one that afforded good volume, good quality and not made for children. I found it all in the Nokia 2660. A sleek, modern looking phone without the side buttons that are so annoying to take a picture when you dont want to (or need to at all!)or turn the volume down by accident. The volume switch is the main toggle inside used during a call. Not as inconvenient as that may sound. The clarity is wonderful, better than the Pantech I am still on contract with, that's why I got the unlocked phone(simply insert your old SIM card to achieve all your old records from the former phone). I would rather spend the not exorbitant price that good ol' Amazon offers for the Nokia 2660 than continue using that piece of junk.
The fonts are also made for variation, and older than 20-somethings: large is very large and medium and small also work well. The only time I get any static at all is if the caller has me on hold Muzak and I have the loudspeaker cranked up to it's highest setting. Again, No big deal. It also featues an FM radio which is handy with their earbud headphone system. Works well considering it's a phone. ALso. it is Bluetooth enabled. Nice amenities for a "basic" phone.
Takes and keeps a charge for days without running out, and recharges quickly. Clarity on both sides, calling and receiving, is excellent. Volume for someone who is slightly hard of hearing (Baby Boomer report!)is adjustable as I said but needn't be at the highest setting to hear well.
Also this is an American phone - no problem with International or no warranties as with some unlocked phones and no international characters on the keyboard. Just plain English letters and numbers. Tho you have preferences for other languages on the menu if needed.
Had a question on changing my SIM card and NOKIA customer service was very patient and helpful, staying on the phone till I fixed the problem (my ignorance only). Thus, customer service is reliable.
AS usual, AMazon.com delivered at lightning speed and I have been very satisfied with both companies and my camera-less, basic but sleek, cool looking phone, the Nokia 2660. I would recommend it highly to anyone looking for a camera-less phone.

It seems the other reviewer got a bad unit, because my phone EXCEEDED every expectation I ever had for it. Dropped calls are just as often to blame on a network as on a phone, I've rarely had any...
I got it in the summer of '05, when I was in college. It survived the last 2 1/2 years of college with me, including me turning 21 and spending time in the local watering holes, which can be quite rough on handsets.
It's been dropped countless times from various heights (and I'm tall) onto often hard surfaces, such as concrete. It's been submerged no less than 2 times.
Basically, I beat the crap out of this phone, and it still worked like a charm. Sadly, in our last few months together, this little guy has been having some trouble. Despite his valiant efforts, things are starting to go, namely the battery doesn't hold a charge for more than a day, and even a replacement battery couldn't resolve that issue. Despite T-Mobile's numerous offers to upgrade my phone over the years, I declined. I honestly can say that I don't think I'll ever find a replacement for this phone that performs the way it did.
It's UI was intuitive, it's construction was rugged, it's quality unmatched. Last night I powered him down for the last time after browsing through years and years of pictures and the memories that comes with them, noting how bright and vibrant the display still was, not a single dead spot. I laughed as I saw my friend holding his girlfriend's purse, scowled at an ex-girlfriend, cringed at a picture of a snapping turtle, marveled at Mt. Rainier in Washington state, laughed at a puppy, and so on and so on. I pulled the SIM card out and closed the battery panel, and strangely felt a twinge of sadness. Strange, because I'm hardly a sentimental person, yet this phone had been with me for such a long time, and performed so admirably, I feel wrong just being done with it. Even it's primitive camera was still snapping pictures to the very end.
Some of our highlights:

- Two trips, spanning a total of 6 months, in the Alaskan wilderness
- Road trip covering much of the central and western United States
- One splashdown in the toilet at work

- Surviving outside over night in freezing Minnesota winters
- Being sat on countless times
- Numerous breakups and new relationships
- Being hired for various jobs
- Spending time as a puppy chew toy
In short, if, for any reason, you might be looking at this phone... BUY IT. No question, no regrets. I will be mothballing mine, but not trashing it - maybe I am sentimental after all?

The customer service person at Amazon assured me it came with a U.S. charger. However, when I received the phone, it came with the European charger. The phone is also European, words are not spelled in the American way and the phone displays military time. This is not a big deal to me, but I would have preferred a U.S. phone. I ordered a new charger and the phone works great. This is also the first bad experience I've ever had with Amazon.

BlackBerry Pearl 8100 Phone, Black (T-Mobile) Review

(More customer reviews)I have never used blackberry before this one. I was looking for a cellphone with multimedia capabilities and with which I can check my email. BB Pearl fit that profile very well. I did read some reviews before getting it. Most of the reviews were very positive with one concern that was raised in some reviews that voice quality was not as good as reviewers expected. It was a concern to me but I thought that I could always return it if I noticed voice problems.
Here are some of my impressions from three weeks of use:
* Voice quality is excellent (I am in twin cities on t-mobile network). I haven't taken it outside the metro area or to another city yet. So, I don't know if that would effect voice quality
* I agree with couple of other reviewers that speaker phone is not the best quality. I only expect to use it on rare occasions.
* Phone paired easily with my samsung and motorola blue tooth headsets. I also have a stereo overhead bluetooth headset and when I paired the stereo bluetooth headset it worked great. It is amazing how clear other side sounds with a good quality stereo bluetooth headset.
* The back cover of the BB pearl seems to be made of flimsy plastic and I am afraid that if I removed cover too many times it might break and I will have to buy a replacement cover. When you open the back cover, you will see the battery. Underneath the battery are two slots. One for sim card and one for the micro sd card. You have to lift the latch and then insert the cards and close it. I am concerned that if I am not careful these latches to secure the cards may break. Seems to me a bit over engineering on BB's part. Because I was concerned about the durability of the outer back cover, I bought 1 GB micro sd card with plenty of storage, so that I don't have to open the back cover often to replace the micro sd card. You can transfer data to micro sd card either thru the supplied usb cable or thru bluetooth.
* Mp3 music: I transferred mp3 music files to micro sd and the player played without any problems. There are two issues to be aware of. One, the jack on the phone is 2.5 mm. Most stereo headphones are 3.5 mm. So, if you want to listen to stereo music on your favorite headset, you would need a small 2.5mm to 3.5mm converter. I bought mine from target for few dollars. The second issue is that I was unable to listen to music in stereo using my bluetooth stereo headphones (though I was able to listen to phone conversation in stereo using the same bluetooth headset). I don't know at this point why it was. I called t-mobile BB tech support but they were not able to give me a satisfactory answer.
* During the first week, I got number of "java null pointer exception" error messages during conducting different operations. The errors have decreased but I still got one couple of days ago. I am thinking these are software bugs, that t-mobile/BB need to fix.
* I am very happy with the email. It arrives instantaneously and I see a red blinking light when there is an email message in my mail box. Setting up email thru BB internet server was a breeze
* While email is great on BB. Web browsing leaves much to be desired for. Part of the problem is that t-mobile's network is slow (in the process of being upgraded), and then navigation on the BB browser is not easy. Perhaps, I will get used to it, but for right now I don't enjoy it much.
* Key pad is bit crowded. After three weeks of use, I still mistype a key once in a while, because the keys are so close to each other. I can't imagine using it for typing long messages. Just short quick notes. Perhaps, if you have more nimble fingers it may work better for you.
* Screen is very vibrant and clear. You would not be disappointed. I have had no problem reading messages, emails.
* Camera is ok quality. I would not throw my regular camera. I expect to only use it rarely
* Navigation ball is excellent and you would definitely like it to move "cursor" from application to application. I did notice one day that I could not move up the screen with the navigation ball. I turned off BB and started it again and the problem went away.
* As I said this is my first BB and before buying it I heard that you could read (not edit) microsoft documents plus pdfs. The gottacha here is that you can do that only if the documents are part of email attachments. So, for instance, you cannot upload a MS word document on your micro sd card and view it. I am disappointed with this limitation.
* The extra battery for BB pearl is being sold for approx $50. I consider it a highway robbery by RIM (maker of BB) to sell a $5 battery for that much. I am disgusted by this level of greed.
* I have noticed that after about a month of it's release still it's difficult to find accessories specifically for BB pearl like a leather cover. I liked the leather cover advertised at the official BB shop at shopblackberry.com but it's not going to be available until mid november. Meanwhile, beware of web sites which are re-marketing their existing products as made for BB pearl to make a buck.
Overall, I am very happy with the BB Pearl. Many of my complaints are minor to me and do not materially effect my decision to buy this BB. I hope my two cents will help you in making a better decision if this phone is for you or not. Goodluck
