(More customer reviews)I was a little apprehensive in the beginning to get this white version of BB Pearl. I was pleasantly surprised with its looks once I rec'd the shipment. It is a TRUE pearl color and not white or off-white as advertised.
I am new to BB and I wanted a phone that can basically sync with my Outlook. I am used to Windows mobile phones and could not find something I liked when the time came to get a new one.
Using this phone is pretty intuitive. I did not touch the user guide until now. Was able to sync with my Outlook Calendar and Contacts with ease. Call clarity is good and T-Mobile's reception at my work location is surprisingly far better than Cingular. I was not expecting this.
Connection to the internet and the usage of Yahoo Messenger is a breeze. Net speeds are good. Fav-five feature is useful and I can get away with just 300 minutes of talk-time.
It took me about a half-hour to get used to the typing (Suretype instead of multitap). But you need to have confidence in the phone that it figures out the word as you type, though the word looks awfully different from what you want while you are typing - it got it right by the end of the word 99% of the time. Moreover it learns new words as you use it.
I still need to figure out how to get Num-Lock on/off quickly to make it easier to type in just numbers in some cases instead of hitting the Shift key all the time.
The track ball's sensitivity is adjustable but I did not see a need for that. It takes a little bit to get used to but it is easy. I am a little concerned, given its sensitive roll and touch, if it is going to last the 2-year contract period. I am usually not a rough user of my gadgets, so it should be OK.
Finally - Google Maps are awesome!
I know they are not as good as Verizon's VZNavigator on my KRZR, but hey they are free.

This major update to the popular 7105t brings the BlackBerry experience to a whole new level. The BlackBerry 8100 Pearl is not only thinner and lighter, it also sports a memory card slot, a music player, and voice dialing. Design Like the BlackBerry 7105t, the BlackBerry 8100 Pearl is a departure from the form factor of previous BlackBerry devices. This BlackBerry handset is far more phone-like, and RIM's engineers have managed to fit a QWERTY keyboard onto the handset's slim frame. Each button on the keyboard shares two letters and the unit automatically determines which letter is the intended one based on what it predicts you are trying to spell. This unique predictive text technology, known as SureType, makes the BlackBerry 8100 Pearl's handset's diminutive size possible. SureType also learns the words you use most often, further enhancing your typing speed.
The BlackBerry 8100 Pearl sports a large 240 x 260 screen that supports over 65,000 colors--plenty of real estate to view your emails, Web browser content, messaging sessions, and attachments. (More customer reviews)I bought this phone because it was free with an instant rebate. If anyone out there is looking for a deal I would recommend shopping here in Amazon. So far I haven't had any problems with using the phone. If you are looking for a compact smartphone I would recommend the BB Pearl. The only downside I have is the small keypad but you get used to it afterwards. My plan with T-mobile is also far more cheaper than when I was with Verizon.

Programs-The reason I included this first is because all Cingular Users need to be aware of this. This phone is capable of AIM, Yahoo messanger, ect... but you must download an additional program. On Tmobile AIM is availible from the start, but Cingular does not provide any Apps for this. This link will provide you with programs to use instant chat services for this phone. I use Rambal, a free program for AIM and it works flawlessly. Second note-Instant messanging with programs such as this counts as general Data, not messanging. So, all owners must have (I have the $40 unlimited DATA plan, but plans start in the $20s) data plans, not SMS messaging plans to use this. Use this link to find aftermarket messaging programs that you require.

Screen-Outstanding, very sharp, great color saturation, great shape. The colors stand out more than on the screen of a 5.5G Ipod, its fantastic.
Sound Quality/ Call Quality-Decent, not outstanding, far better than your average Razr or of the like, but this phone is $499 without contract and there are phones with better Sound/ Call Quality. Note: You must by an adaptor to use headphones if you intend to listen to music as this uses a very small mic. jack. You can purchase one for about $15 on everything [...]
Suretype-This is better than Qwartry, my friend has one for her business and this is far superior. It takes about 2 hours to really master, but its outstanding. I can type much faster than she can, even though the Pearl does not have a regular Qwartry keyboard.
Memory-The phone has enough memory on board if you only plan on using it as a phone. But, if you want to use that camera or recieve emails you need to buy MicroSD, Scandisk makes up to 2 gig capacity. I highly recomend at LEAST 1 gig because of all the features of this phone, if you buy this phone with Data, GET 2 Gigs ($70 on amazon about). It is not a hassle to access the memory behind the battery, given the size of SDMicro (about the size of a thumdnail) I am glad to know it is safely enclosed behind the battery panel.
Email-When you get this phone, you can easily send all your email to this phone.
Currently I am sending my Gmail, .Mac, and Aol email to my Blackberry. All three have their own message boxes on my blackberry interface, but all emails are also shown in my blackberrys general mailbox which is convienent and works similiarly to Enterage.
Microsoft Office programs-Opens powerpoint, word, excel, PDF...ect flawlessly, just like you would expect with images and all sharply displayed.
Music/ Camera- This phone can play everything, MP3s, MPG4s, AACs, ect. Just note to all Itunes users-IT CANNOT PLAY MUSIC BOUGHT FROM ITUNES. Remember that Itunes music is encryped with protected AAC so you must convert your music to MP3s for it to work. The Camera is decent, images are grainy, I would compare picture quality to Isight. Only drawback is that it cannot record Video, a feature I am sure the next iteration will entail.
Syncing-Has problems with Bluetooth syncing with Apple computers. I have found though that using Pocketmac (google it, RIM bought Pocketmac so while it is free you cannot download it from Pocketmac anymore, and instead must go to a RIM webpage). Pocketmac lets you sync countless programs, including almost all OSX programs, office mail programs, and even Lotus notes. Remember for Pocketmac though, you have to OPEN THE PROGRAM FIRST THEN ATTACH YOUR BLACKBERRY USING USB, OTHERWISE THE PROGRAM WILL HAVE A SYNCING ERROR.
No Wifi is a drawback, but for Data, Cingulars network is actually very fast, it does take about 10 minutes for all my emails to appear on my blackberry.
Overall-Best phone I have ever owned.
If it synced better with my mac, had video capture, had Wifi, and played all my tunes along with a regular headphone port, I would be VERY happy. Also, it is too bad Cingualr doesnt provide IM support out of the box, but reseaarch and 3rd party developers firxed that.

- All the typical blackberry functionality available.
- A lot of other features that can be expected from a smartphone, such a camera, MP3 player, Calendar, PC sync, etc...
- This quasi-qwerty keyboard takes a day or two to get used to but the "suretype" software works sooooo well that you will be amazed. In about 90% of the typing I do on this phone, It works just like a normal qwerty keyboard. Entering names and web addresses at times requires manual intervention, otherwise the software takes care of everything. You have to try it to believe it.
Cons:
- Supports only EDGE. 3G is definitely faster and it becomes strikingly painful when you are trying to do a lot of information searching in a small period of time, mostly when you are on the road. But for the most part, it does its job
- Battery life. Nothing to brag about but then I heard that other phones in the category have worse battery performances. So, I guess I will have to live with it. I am sure if I search the web, I can find articles on how to minimize battery usage. On less than moderate use, it lasts about 2 days.
- The headset that comes with it is a joke. And the headphone jack is not a standard one. So, if you actually want to use it as an MP3 player, you have to purchase the converter for the jack for $15 approx and then use your headphone with it. I personally view this as a very cheap tactic.
Overall, it is a great phone. But I am already getting over the crackberry addiction and have stopped checking my gmail on this every 10 mins. I might even drop the data plan altogether :-). And can't complain about the price either.
Nothing has happened yet for me to vouch for its toughness and build quality but I am guessing it won't be built as tough as my old Nokia 8260.
I took a star away for the minor qualms mentioned above in the cons.

It has an MP3 player, and the speakers sound really nice. It has really great sound for such a little phone. The only thing I can complain about the media player is that it only plays one song at a time unless you select play all but it always plays the first song at the top of the list first. But I really like that I can use my own Mp3's as my ringtones. Okay, well I guess I can complain about something else, sometimes its a little slow between applications. But the internet runs pretty good for a phone. I have yahoo messenger on it and also set up my yahoo and google email addresses on it. I like how all of my new messages, text messages, picture mails, emails and everything end up in the same folder. It makes retreiving a new message a breeze.

As you can probably surmise, I'm coming over from the Windows Mobile platform. After several years of wrestling with those units (especially Treos), I decided to give the BlackBerry 8830 a try, and am I glad that I did. I've had the opportunity to own/use this unit for several months now. There is just no comparison. The 8830 lives up to its promises, and is actually enjoyable to use.
This model is
- Reliable: It just works, and it keeps working. No hiccups, malfunctions or resetting.
- A Great Business Tool: As a PDA power user, I need a unit that reliably synchs wirelessly with our mail server to keep my email, calendar, contacts, tasks and notes current. The 8830 does this real-time without getting bogged down and crashing. It excels in this area.
- Readable: You can change the default screen font in the Options settings to enlarge and/or embolden the display text across all functions.
- Call clarity: Conversations are clear and audible on both ends.
- Smart: RIM built in some nice behavior that changes the display brightness with environmental lighting and also changes the ring mode when the unit is holstered.
- The keyboard offers excellent tactile feedback.
- The blue-tooth has worked with headsets and hands-free speakers nicely.
- Robust: I dropped the unit a few times (once on a marble floor), and it still works great.
I've found several minor drawbacks:
- The ringer, even when loudest, isn't quite loud enough in noisier environments. Often, I won't hear the ringer in the car.
- There is only 1 alarm. I've been accustomed to having the ability to simultaneously set alarms that ring during the week, on weekends, etc. The 8830 offers these modes, but not concurrently.
- The speakerphone volume isn't very loud. Honestly, this seems to apply to most of the phones that I've owned.
- I've had problems with the voice-command accuracy.
Recommendation:
This is likley the best SmartPhone I've ever owned. Its very functional and very reliable. I highly recommend it.

I decided to go with a smart phone because I have tons of contacts for my business. I didn't subscribe to the data service, just need good contact management capabilities.
Sound quality and signal reception are both great on the phone. Just came from a Razor on Verizon's network and never new I had bad sound quality til I got on this phone/AT&T.
The phone has a pseudo qwerty keyboard. I was used to multi-tapping on a number pad and it took some getting used to. The trick is to just type the words you want, the phone is EXTREMELY good about knowing the word you want based on the possible combinations of letters you have selected. As the phone guesses what you want, it will appear as a little menu beneath the word so you can select it and not type the whole thing if you choose.
I really like the trackball on the phone. It's great for navigation and doubles as a selection button.
The camera supports three resolutions: 640x480,1024x768,1600x1200. I bought a 2GB MicroSD card for the phone and use the 1600x1200 res. Pictures come out REALLY nice for a cell phone. A cell camera will always be less quality than a full size digital camera, but these pictures are nice and clear. Initially when I put in the 2GB MicroSD card the phone didn't recognize it, but after resetting the phone by removing the battery, it recognized it. I previously had a 16MB card it and I think it confused the phone when I swapped them out.
The phone comes with a USB cable (standard connector type, not proprietary) and the phone will be recognized as a mass storage device when connected to a computer, no software need be installed. This is a HUGE bonus IMO, many phones will not show up as a mass storage device, necessitating you e-mailing or texting yourself pictures to get them off the phone.
The phone feels very solid in your hand, but not overly heavy.
The buttons on the side can be reprogrammed to different functions. First thing I did was reset the Push To talk button to lock the keyboard instead. I reprogrammed the camera button to display the various profiles (Loud, Normal, Vibrate) so i could quickly switch between ring modes.
All profiles are fully customizable so you can set different ring tones for each. A word of caution, the "loud" profile defaults to Vibe and Ring, but the actual ringer does not ring until after vibrating for several seconds. If you were in the next room, you may miss a call because you don't hear the ring until late into the game. This is easily modified though.
I am really glad I went with this phone. Originally, wanted to get another Razor, but glad I decided on this. Never had a cell phone I liked as much as this one.

(More customer reviews)I had the BlackBerry 8700g for a year and really liked it, but just decided to upgrade to the Curve. I've only had the Curve for a few days and I already absolutely love it. Smaller, lightweight, with a more efficient means of typing a message by being able to use the trackball for editing. I love that the Curve has a camera where the 8700g does not. And it has a flash--double bonus points. It's very easy to use and with the 8700g I beceme very spoiled with being able to get my email wherever I go. Now in addition to that, I have WiFi, so the Curve will hook up to the closest WiFi connection and I have even faster internet capabilities with it. I also love that I can go anywhere and use my BlackBerry as a modem for my laptop. The BlackBerry tech support department at T-Mobile helped me set the 8700g and then the Curve as modems when I purchased them. Using this function I don't have to pay the absurd prices to connect to a HotSpot of any kind. (I just keep my cable in my backpack that I carry my laptop in.) There are lots of features I haven't had the opportunity to explore and am not sure how to use, like the music capabilities. I suppose it would help if I read my manual. :o)

(More customer reviews)For years I could not drink the "BlackBerry Kool-Aid" and thought many of my BlackBerry-toting friends were over-the-top zealots until I had my share of PDA follies and resigned myself to trying a BlackBerry. I speak from experience, having owned a Treo 700, a UT Starcom 6700 and a Motorola Q--I have experience with three of the top PDA and SmartPhone platforms.
If you are seeking a compact cellular phone that can keep you organized, keep you in touch, and entertain you without the great expense of other devices (iPhone), you've found a superbly functional tool in the BlackBerry Pearl.
Overall I have been quite impressed with the performance of the Pearl, which I obtained through my employer in February of 2008. At the time Verizon did not offer the BlackBerry Curve, which I had originally sought and could not wait for. I had a BlackBerry World Edition phone, but hated the fact that it lacked the basic multimedia recording abilities every cell phone in the world now has, making it not so...worldly.
I have found the Pearl to be a great organizational device, syncing perfectly with my office desktop. Mail push is flawless and reliable, messaging is simple and the trackball allows you to navigate with one hand quite easily. If you have been used to touch screen devices, this will take a little time to adjust to, but you will find in time that a stylus was a real pain to keep track of and you will no longer fret over having to buy screen protector covers that soften your screen images.
You would think that such a small screen would make for difficult viewing, but I have had no trouble reading any of my emails or messages and there are numerous typeface families available to customize the look. The screen is bright and crisp; video plays well and colors are vibrant.
There are two features that carry the "wow factor": BlackBerry instant messaging and the still camera performance. RIM (Research In Motion) has its own messaging system, free to all BlackBerry owners no matter what cellular provider you are with. You can send text, pictures and audio messages between BlackBerry owners free of charge. The still camera is rated at 2 megapixels and takes great pictures where there is decent light, good pictures where the light is moderate (indoors), and acceptable pictures in lower light levels. A built-in flash is okay within three feet, but outdoors in good light is where this camera shines. I haven't been that impressed with the video camera, but it is, after all, a cell phone posing as a multimedia device and one needs to be realistic about this.
Currently I am using a 2 GB microSD card in the Pearl and I have been able to keep a good amount of still pictures saved in high quality, mp3 music files with album art, videos, and miscellaneous files such as Word and PDF documents.
The one thing I feared was the predictive text powered by the SureType keyboard. I've been a QWERTY keyboard fan ever since I learned to type in college back in 1982, so selling me on predictive text wasn't easy. Basically, the SureType layout doubles-up the keyboard, putting two letters on each key. When you tap (type) your words, the Pearl will instantly give you a pull-down menu of several words it thinks you are trying to type. You have the option of saving yourself some time by using the trackball to scroll and select the correct word before you type the rest of it, or take your chances and see what comes out. Most of the time I get what I meant to type.
I have adapted pretty well to this concept, but have been aggravated on many occasions when I can't get the right letter to come up where I need it, or I am in a hurry and the predictive text function has put in a nonsensical word I overlooked before I sent the message or email. This has sometimes wasted more time where a QWERTY keyboard like the one on the Moto Q gives you exactly what you type faster and without having to go back to retype.
Don't be discouraged: a custom dictionary function automatically saves words you type and you can go back and edit it or add words you often might use, like trade names, abbreviations, or names of unique towns. Eventually, it seems to learn what you type most frequently. Smart device...
Call quality is very good, though the microphone hole is at the bottom of the phone, on the side, instead of at the bottom of the phone and on the front face by the keyboard. The earpiece produces good sound, though I am not totally sold on the speaker phone. It tends to sound hollow and not as clear as on Motorola phones. I think Motorola has the best quality there with its Sprint i-series phones and the Q. The Pearl does offer a mini stereo audio jack, which is standard for many small headphones and earpieces, so hats off to RIM for not making something proprietary that requires an adapter.
Bluetooth features with this phone are solid, allowing you to use either a hands-free device or stereo headset. I have my Pearl paired with a Motorola S9 stereo headset that has acceptable music quality and good call quality, but I am not 100% pleased with Bluetooth abilities here. I have been able to pair it with my MacBook laptop, but Object Push (OBEX) isn't functional. I've tried to send photos and other files to the laptop and other Bluetooth enabled devices with no success. I've had to remove my microSD card or pull objects from it by searching from the laptop. I think this is more of an issue with Verizon disallowing that particular feature than it is with the device itself.
So here is my synopsis of this device:
GREAT:
* Compact, sleek device loaded with features.
* Inexpensive to buy with a new plan on Verizon.
* Fantastic still camera quality.
* Backlighted keyboard is very easy to read in the dark.
* BlackBerry's messaging system.
* Bright, crisp screen that's easy to read.
* Universal USB charging port that is not finicky about which Verizon USB charger you use (it's recommended you use the Verizon charger that comes with the phone, but can be charged with other USB chargers in an emergency)
GOOD:
* Call quality.
* Music playback quality.
* Overall multimedia performance (voice notes, too).
* Trackball makes it easy to navigate browser screens.
* Predictive text works fairly well.
* The BlackBerry leather holster with magnetic flap. It holds the device securely and protects it well...you must buy separately, but is available on Amazon.com at a discount.
AGGRAVATING:
* Predictive text can sometimes be stubborn. There is an adjustment period if you've been full QWERTY before owning a Pearl.
* It doesn't happen often, but the device can get stuck in "annoying hourglass mode" where a rotating hourglass appears in center screen while the device tries to get out of a constant cycle of processor functions. There is a remedy for this: remove the battery once a day. Verizon tech support told me the Pearl was not made with an automatic "memory cleaner". Doing a hard reboot, they said, will help the device start fresh and avoid that perpetual hourglass mode.
* The leather pouch that comes with the device. Maybe it's good for women who carry their cell phones in their purses or bags, but it's useless for men who like to carry the phone on their belt. RIM or Verizon should include a pouch with a removable clip...everyone would be happy.
Overall, this is an excellent value with a superb price-performance ratio. It does many things quite well, especially email and messaging, and is a stable performer. If you are in the market for your first SmartPhone or PDA purchase, you really should consider the BlackBerry Pearl.

I was hoping someone would add a review of this phone before i bought it.
But no luck. So far i have been very impressed. the suretype takes some getting use to, and sometimes i think it would be faster to just use multi tap mode. the features are nice and the the phone is very customizeable. (changing wallpaper, icons, mving icons etc.) The web browser works very well. I have many wi-fi connections around me but they are locked systems so i changed the settings to detect mobile first. it goes much faster. it lacks a gps system. maps are available but it doesn't show you where you are. i got the browser/e-mail option and mapquest is available through that. storage is expandable to 16gb but i have only found 8gb cards. the simple word,excel,ppt are nice features. the screen does well for it's size while using those. the browser zoom in feature comes in very handy. The camera is a nice extra. Extra being the key word. I'm used to digital slr and 8mp so 2mp is just an extra to me. works well for it's size though. the roller ball seems "cheap" but i'm a guy and like things "tough". the phone comes with a 256mb card. recommend getting bigger. that's just not enough to hold music and documents. The speakers are loud. very impressive. voice dialing tries to make a good go of it. it takes some getting used to though if your not used to speaking clearly and slowly. I've had the phone for only two weeks now but sure am enjoying figuring out what all it can do. I have only been disappointed in the fact that the screen could have been made bigger given the size of the flip and space available. but i guess they needed room to show the blackberry logo and the t-mobile logo. the contact book is very impressive. you can add more information about someone than you care to know i think. over all it seems like a good smart phone with key features that you'll actually use rather than wonder why they are there. i'm still looking for a compatible e-reader for .pdb files though. hope this review helps. ps, haven't had problems with the battery either.
