(More customer reviews)This is a very lightweight phone. It is small. The color user interface is really nice. I like the '5-Faves' thing. It is a circle of big dots on the screen that you can rotate around by clicking it, which are your 5 friends that you call the most. Nice feature, because you don't have to scroll through your phone book. I think T-Mobile markets more to the youth market, and I think they will like this feature a lot. I like the user-friendliness of this phone with T-Mobile. The best thing to me is that this is a GSM tri-band phone, so I can use it when on business trips to Germany. I was impressed by both this phone, and T-Mobile. The phone has some nice features, like calendar, and even a tip-calculator, which I think is a great feature. You type in the check amount and it automatically calculates the 15 % tip. Nice touch. It seems so far to have decent battery life. There is a voice notes thing, but I haven't figured out exactly how to use it. Overall, this is a very nice phone, with just enough "bells and whistles".

LG Chocolate VX8550 Phone, Black (Verizon Wireless) Review

(More customer reviews)I was attracted to the LG Chocolate for many of the same reasons that everyone else here was: it's sleek and sexy, thin enough to comfortably sit in my pocket, and pretty cheap for a fashionable phone. Upon acquiring it however, I found it had several serious glitches.
My previous phone was a Sony Ericsson w600i (AT&T), and the one before that was a Sony Ericsson T616. Both of these phones were incredibly sturdy, fashionable, reliable, intuitive, and overall just really good phones. All the menus were simple, as brief as possible, and plenty customizable. All the necessities like call quality, battery life, longevity, and ease of use were top notch. However, I had to switch to Verizon when my contract expired because AT&T does a really poor job of covering the area I now live in. It deeply saddened me that Verizon did not offer any Sony Ericsson phones.
In any case, onto the Chocolate. My first big complaint about the Chocolate is the touch keypad. This sounds like a good, hip idea in theory, but in practice it brings about dozens of curses and violent tendencies. When trying to adjust the volume, you hit it with your thumb. During calls, if you dial numbers on the keypad (such as in your voicemail), you unlock the touch pad and when the phone touches your face, you access menus and sometimes even mute the phone. Then the pad locks up, and you're forced to unlock the keys and unmute the phone, all while your contact on the other end goes, "Hello? Can you hear me?"
In addition to the poorly conceptualized keypad, the menus are long and clunky. On my old phones, you could select an item (like, Turn Alarm Off/On), and simply push the D-Pad left or right to turn it off. Instead, on the Chocolate, you must select the text box, hit "Set", change the setting to On or Off, hit "Save", wait for the cute animated checkbox to tell you whether or not it's now on/off, and then return the previous menu. Do this enough times while just trying to accomplish a simple task, and pretty soon you'll be fed up with needless confirmations.
Now, the stupid menus I can't get around. However, the touchpad thing is a bit better now. If I dial the sensitivity down to "low", which is still plenty sensitive to detect a deliberate button push, the accidental inputs aren't that much of a problem. In terms of accidental face inputs (which were INCREDIBLY frustrating), I found that if you select the numbers, hold the phone away from your face for about 2 seconds to wait for the touchpad to lock, then put the phone to your face, they don't really happen. Kind of a pain, yes, but it's just one of those things you have to learn to do, like ducking your head when you get in your car so you don't hit that annoying handle every time.
Thanks to the good build quality, great looks, excellent battery life, and good call quality, I gave this phone 3 stars. It lost points for the illconceived touchpad, annoying menus, and a slider mechanism which seems like it will fail sometime before 2 years are up.

(More customer reviews)I have to say that I'm happy I ignored negative reviews about this phone. These people are probably not as technically inclined as I am (sorry), but this phone is wonderful. There are two things that I want from a phone: style and good features. This phone has both. I love gadgets, and I own everything electronic. I personally do carry a wifi enabled pda (with a camera, calendar, and ability to play music and movies) and/or laptop (with GPS) with me most times, so it's not important that my phone has it all. Other than that, this phone has what I need and the features are so easy to use.
Here is a list of my favorite features of the phone:
1. Voice activated menus...that feature works flawlessly. Being able to use the feature to call up any song or any number or anyone on my contact list without programming is fabulous. I love it.
2. I love that I don't have to buy wallpaper or music espressly for this phone. I already had a micro SD card with music and photos on it, and I was able to transfer them very easily. Because the manual does NOT include it (which is suspicious), here's how to transfer music onto the phone very easy:
-You have to get a micro SD card and adapter...If you have a dell laptop, there is a slot expressly for SD cards. Otherwise you will need that USB cable that Verizon sells.
-On the phone, you will need to enter the mini SD card and format it for use with the phone. Go to the Settings menu and select memory at the bottom of the menu. Select save options, and choose sounds, then card memory. Your phone will be ready for file transfers from your computer to the phone.
-The phone will transfer mp3s and wma files. Insert sd into its adapter and either insert it or the cable onto the computer.
-Now your ready to copy your music files. You will copy it into the temporary drive for the SD card, into the "my music" folder. You can do the same for your pictures, in the "My Pix" folder. There is also a folder for your videos.
-When you are done, you will insert the mini SD card back, and go to My Music, the files will be there. Tada. It's not that complicated, but to do it right, follow these instructions. You don't have to buy their music and pics, just rip your CDs and turn them into MP3's and copy personal pics onto camera to use as wallpaper.
3. Good Volume
-After having a nextel motorola phone, which has an excellent loud volume on calls (unlike the Razr V3 which has horrendously low volume on calls), this phone has great sound. You don't have to strain, and the speakerphone is wonderful.
4. GPS Navigation is wonderful
-Although most verizon phones has this feature, it does work very well on this phone. I love the feature, and although my laptop has GPS navigation, it's not always convenient on the go. The navigator is very exact, audible and the turn by turn directions are great.
5. I love the navigation wheel on the phone. I did change the speed to medium, because it moved too slowly.
6. The tip calculator seems really cool. I never had one before.
7. The phone's appearance is beautiful and sleek. Its very small considering my old phone, but I love it. It's shiny, easy to use, and comfortable to carry. I'm very happy about the color, which is slightly irridecent and very glossy.
8. The phone charges rather quickly. I was think about getting the car adapter, but I've seen it charge within an hour.
9. The photos come out very sharp, without much effort. It has the ability to change the picture into sepia, black and white...that's pretty cool. The videos come out okay, but I must admit, I can't figure how to get better volume.
I'm happy. For those who want to text and pay all that money to have access to the internet..this ain't the phone for you. I have a PDA/laptop that picks up wifi (which they have at school and every Panera), so I don't need to get the data plan and blackberry. This is the phone for people that use a phone expressly for a phone, and want to play some music from time to time--and it looks cooler than talking into a square block phone.
My minimal gripes...
-The music feature's playlist organization should be easier. I assume if I chose to buy that software, it will make it easy to organize my files.
-The phone should come with the USB cable and memory card, but I understand why. Not everyone cares about the music/photo/video transfer feature.
-The phone's keypad is not friendly to those who heavily text--I personally don't like texting, but I can see why it may not be the best choice for that stuff. If you do some occasional texting it's fine.
-You have to buy specific earphones and accessories for this phone. I thought I could use my old hands free earphones--no. You must buy the ones to fit the chocolate.
Have fun with your chocolate phone.

(More customer reviews)I've had my Chocolate for 2 weeks now, and other than getting a bum battery the first time around (which Verizon replaced without any problem), I've had no issues with it. Sure, it took some training to get used to the touch pad and scroll wheel, but now that I've played around with it, it's easy - just a slight tap is all it takes. I've also not had the problem of my face bumping the touch pad during a call...but I also noticed that my phone locks the touchpad during a call.
I've made several calls on my Chocolate and the call clarity is excellent - it sounds like the person is right in the other room. I've not had any problems with dropped calls, either, with the exception of the known "dead" areas around where we live. Battery life has been pretty good - with a good battery and regular usage, I can get about 4 days in between charges (the bad battery was only getting me 2 days...I knew that had to be a problem).
The camera quality is pretty good for a camera phone. The images are quite a bit more clear than on my old phone (an LG VX8100) even though they both have 1.3 megapixels. The camera also comes with quite a few options, from photo colors (black and white, sepia, etc.) to zoom to different "shutter" noises (click, "say cheese", etc.) I haven't yet used the video.
I also haven't had a chance to use the mp3 player feature yet. I did get a USB cable in order to sync music, but you can also move music files over to a microSD card in order to play music on the phone. I've also downloaded a free program that will allow me to use my music files as ringtones and plan to do so when I get a chance.
So far, I'm really enjoying my Chocolate. It's a great phone and has lots of fun features. It's not 100% perfect - nothing is - and has some things that I might do a little differently. But the many pro's far outweigh the few "could be a bit different" things, at least in my opinion. To sum it up - I would recommend a Chocolate to anyone who wants a gadgety phone.

And Verizon doesn't force you to buy a data plan for this phone, which I don't neeed.

(More customer reviews)I've been using a 6086 with T-Mobile's Hotspot at Home service for several months now, and it's worked adequately but not incredibly.
The main issues I've had with the phone all relate to power consumption, charging and battery life. The battery only lasts for 1-2 days with moderate usage. WiFi connections use more power, even if you have a T-Mobile branded router with the Wireless Multimedia extensions it uses to prolong battery life.
In addition, Nokia has changed from their traditional 3.6 or 3.7 volt charger to a 5 volt 350mA power supply, so all those older power supplies you have are not usable with this phone. In addition, despite the fact that the voltage is the same as USB voltage they didn't use a USB connector as many other phones have done.
Finally, for T-Mobile usage this phone is locked down so that applications that you install are not able to use the Internet via the phone - this particularly affects third-party web browsers like Opera Mini or applications like Google Maps (Mobile)

(More customer reviews)Contrary to what the documentation says, you don't need to install Rhapsody to sync music to the phone. Before you plug the phone in for the first time, just go into the Settings menu, pick the USB Auto Sync option, and set the phone to the "sync data" setting. That will install the proper drivers. After that, set the phone to "sync music" and you'll be able to use Windows Media Player to sync music anytime thereafter. Or, you can copy music files manually to the my_music folder by activating the "USB Mass Storage" option located in the Settings/Tools menu.
Little quirks like that are the story with this phone.
Pros:
* Strong signal and clear reception
* Great battery life as a phone (4+ hours talk, days of standby)
* Feels and works very much like an Ipod when closed
* Built-in FM transmitter to beam music to car stereo!
* Music playback is loud and clear on phone speaker
* Standard headphone jack
* 2MP camera
* Two beautiful color screens (pictures look great!)
* Menus and buttons are very intuitive
* Clicky, responsive keys (feels like a phone!)
* Solid construction, but thin enough to fit in pocket
Cons:
* Ringtone volume is TOO LOUD, with no real way to lower it
* Have to remove SD card to sync to internal memory
* Pictures look a little tinted when sent to PC
* Can't organize pictures into folders, so gallery gets unwieldy fast
* Can't change behavior of the lock button
* Signal strength meter is totally inaccurate
* Mirrored front quickly gathers fingerprints and smudges
For me, those quirks weren't enough to get me to dock a star from the Chocolate 3's rating. I bought the silicon cover to avoid the fingerprint problem. I got around the loud ringtones by downloading and sending a couple "quieter" ones to the phone. The lack of good picture organization and camera quality didn't bug me because I don't use my phone as a camera. The pictures look pretty decent anyway. The signal strength indicator doesn't jive with our two older phones, but in real-world use the Chocolate 3 can make a call in our favorite big grocery store whereas our older phones can't.
Out of all of those tiny peeves, the one thing I wish they'd fix is make it possible to change the behavior of the button that locks the scroll wheel. Right now, a single-click lets you use the scroll wheel. I'd prefer a double-click. I haven't actually managed to unlock the phone in my pocket yet, though, so it's all good.
What I wanted was 1) a comfortable, reliable phone, and 2) a decent music player. The LG VX-8560 Chocolate 3 has delivered superbly on both counts.

The Chocolate 3's digital audio player supports MP3 and WMA files as well as unprotected AAC/AAC+ formats, and it to multitask in other areas of the phone (SMS texting, checking email) while still allowing the music to play on in the background. My phone constantly calls people in my contact list daily (without my knowledge). The keypad freezes for hours at a time and I cannot use the phone at all! The screen goes crazy and just automatically scrolls out of control. I have had this phone for 8 months and had to replace it twice already! It really wears on your patience. You can adjust the touch sensitivity, but it doesn't help. I have had it! Most of the time I can't even use the damn thing! UGH!!!

(More customer reviews)I really wanted to like this phone. The look of it is very sharp and the screen is nice and clear, with great graphics. It's small and fits well in the palm of my hand. The interface is slick and intuitive. It has a decent internal memory (60 MB) as well as supporting microSD cards. Most quibbles were minor enough to ignore (like button sensitivity). I liked almost everything except the reason I bought it. More on that shortly.
Some minor gripes:
As has been mentioned in other reviews, the interface is always a little touchy in some way, particularly the OK button, even after adjusting the sensitivity.
I'm not sure if this is an LG decision or Verizon, but the phone isn't fully capable out of the box. They advertise a music phone, but in order to be able to use it to its full capacity you'll need to get their Music Essentials kit for another 30 bucks, and all you get is a proprietary USB cable and some mediocre headphones. Anyone who buys Nokia phones knows this stuff is almost always included, especially if it's proprietary or required for specific features on the phone (like playing music).
The main reason for purchasing this phone, however, was to have a remote storage device along with being able to play MP3s. My previous phone was a Nokia 3300, which was billed as an MP3 phone, and worked great for that. I could put in a memory card, plug the USB into the computer, and it pops up as a removeable disk, and i could copy files to and from the phone like any other USB thumb/flash drive, no special software required (not even drivers, depending on the OS). This is great for me, because I work and go to school and am constantly shuffling files back and forth between the two and home. The Chocolate does not offer that versatility.
The only way you can copy stuff to the Choclate is using a sync feature via Windows Media Player 10; it does now show up in Windows Explorer when the USB is plugged in. That means the only thing you can copy to the phone is music, so no using it for portable storage. Also, the phone doesn't seem to accept anything except CBR mp3s, preferably ripped by Windows Media Player. Given that I've accumulated over 1000 CDs over the years and have ripped them using various methods with various software, most of my collection won't transfer. The only solution from Verizon's support (who know very little about the phone, I might add) was to re-rip everything using WMP. This is an unacceptable solution, especially since my Nokia would play just about anything I threw at it.
Also annoying, you can't use any of your MP3s as ringtones. I briefly tried the bitpim software, but the Chocolate isn't supported yet and there were various minor issues, most notably it didn't seem to recognize the memory card I purchased for the phone, only the internal memory. Bottom line is I shouln't have to rely on 3rd party software to hack my own phone to get it to work the way i want it.
Perhaps Nokia has spoiled me. No doubt some will say that means I'm just closed-minded, but I've had my 3300 for some time now and it's worked great. Everything was intuitive and versatile. Nokia doesn't intentionally gimp their products like Motorola's SLVR (why iTunes? gah!) or LG's Chocolate.
In short, if you're just looking for a flashy, stylish phone the LG Chocolate fits the bill nicely. Just don't expect it to be the great media player it's been advertised to be. And certainly don't count on it as a remote storage device.

Nokia 6126 Phone (AT&T) Review

(More customer reviews)This review is for an unlocked version of this phone, but with Cingular (or AT&T nowadays) service. I received this phone from my brother (he used to work for Nokia in Texas) because my other phone broke (nokia 6102i) and my contract with Cingular was for another year (yeah, it sucks).
Background: I was not eligible for the upgrade yet, so that meant I had to purchase a phone at retail price (without the contract) which would have run up upwards of $300 and more. So I got this phone (unlocked) as a gift, and the switch-over was relatively easy and trouble-free. I copied my address book from the 6102i onto the SIM card, and when I moved the SIM card to the 6126, the address book was there (taa-daa!). What I was not able to move were the photos I snapped with the old phone. Those I had to send via email, which I saved onto a microSD card and then was able to move to the 6126 (it has a microSD slot, which read the 1Gb card easily).
Features: I have always liked Nokia. This phone is no exception (except one which I will discuss later). It is a clam (ie. flip) phone and is almost as slim as (but slightly lighter than) my Motorola RAZR. I like the menu layout of the Nokia. The camera is up to 1.3 Megapixel resolution (settings of 1,024x1,280, 960x1,290, 600x800, 480x640, 240x320, and 120x160). The photos are decent in daylight, but not too great in poorly-lit areas (but that goes for every camera phone I've ever encountered).
I like the black and silver coloring. No external antenna (sweet). The button on the side to open it is extra (not necessary). The internal display is nice and large, and colorful. I like the navigation keypad. The textured covering on the rear flap is different (I like it, and is about 50-50 with my friends).
There were plenty of hands-free features. There's a speakerphone, which is loud enough to be used outside, Bluetooth for connecting to a headset or for sending files, as well as voice dialing and commands. There is POP3 and IMAP4 e-mail support, audio messaging for sending voicemails directly to another cell phone, and USB cable support (I haven't used this yet).
There is a large 1,000-contact phone book has room in each entry for five phone numbers, e-mail and Web addresses, a job title and a company name, work and home street addresses, a birth date, etc. The SIM card can hold an additional 250 names. Other extras include standard stuff: vibrate mode, text and multimedia messaging, calculator, voice recorder, a calendar with reminders, notepad, stopwatch, and an alarm clock.
Hands-free features were plentiful, as well. There's full Bluetooth for connecting to a headset or for sending files, plus voice dialing and commands and a speakerphone. For hard-core emailers, there is also POP3 and IMAP4 e-mail support.
I tested the quad-band GSM phone in San Francisco/Bay Area using my existing Cingular wireless service. I got the same quality as the old Nokia 6102i phone. Call quality was decent.
Now, for the negatives. A minor drawback with the design is that the MicroSD card slot is located behind the battery cover. Although, you don't need to remove the battery itself, but you do need to remove the cover. My other beef is with the battery life. The 6126 has a rated talk time of 3.4 hours and a promised standby time of 10 days. When I maxed out the talk time, I got about 3.5 to 3.75 hours talk-time (impressive). Because I am always on the phone, it is hard to guage the standby time. However, when I paired and activated the Bluetooth, and connected with a Nokia BH-900 earpiece (By the way, the BH-900 earpiece is sub-standard compared to the Motorola HS850, but that is another review altogether) that is when I got a feeling about the battery life in standby. For half a day of minimal use (20 min max), and standby the rest of the day my battery is now at 20-25% capacity. When I turned off Bluetooth, I was able to go a full day with some use and still have over 50% battery capacity. So it seems that when the Bluetooth feature is activated it is eating up more battery juice (which makes sense). I have yet to find a control that tells the phone to automatically turn off Bluetooth when there is no active device around.
Conclusion: The Nokia 6126 is a nice phone with many features. I only gate it 4-stars because of the battery life. This is a must, especially for a frequent traveler (like me) or those who use the phone/Bluetooth earpiece a lot. Nokia has to improve on the battery life, and this is easily done with a patch to automatically turn off Bluetooth when there are no Bluetooth devices around.
BTW, this phone is still offered from Cingular. I just came from the store

Palm Treo 750 Smartphone (AT&T) Review

(More customer reviews)I got my Treo 750 this week as a replacement for a Blackberry 8700c, which I really liked. My company is heading away from BB and towards Windows Mobile technology, so here I am.
I should say, too, that I've had pretty much every flavor of BB ever made, as well as an Ipaq, Treo 650, Cingular 8125 and many others. I had concluded that for a business user who needs 100% reliable e-mail, and uses the Internet and text messaging a fair amount, the BB 8700 was by far the most reliable way for me.
So as I make the transition from 8700 to 750, here is my list (not too long at this point) of likes and dislikes:
1. The Treo 750 comes new in the box without a holster, belt clip or carrying case of any kind. Unless you want to carry it in your pocket, automatically add $30 to the cost of the phone. Thanks, Cingular.
2. Battery life is not good on the 750. I send and receive well over 100 e-mail messages a day, and my phone usage and Internet use varies. I could go two days without charging my BB, and even given my usage patterns, seldom ran out of battery power.
Yesterday I flew from Chicago to Los Angeles and caught a connecting flight to Palm Springs. The point is, I had the 750 turned off for at least five hours during the day. I took it off the charger at about 6 a.m. Chicago time yesterday morning, and, even after being turned off for five hours, by 6 p.m. Chicago time yesterday afternoon the battery was almost dead.
Buying a spare battery ($30 to $50) seems like a decent solution, but devices that charge the battery only (while it's not on the phone) are hard to find for this phone, and will cost around $50. So the logistics of getting two batteries recharged over night are not that simple - primarily because if you don't have a phone-independent battery charger, you will have to change the battery in the phone every day in order to get two batteries charged. And if you forget to charge the second one, you have potential problems the next day.
As an alternative, you can keep the phone tethered to your computer or on the AC charger (have to have one or the other with you at all times) during the day, and/or buy a car charger, about $20 (if you'll be in the car). But if you're just out and about, battery life will be a significant issue for many.
3. The display is pretty good. But brightness and readability of the screen while outside is an issue. Anyone who's had a BB 8700 knows how easy it is to read that screen outside. The Treo 750 takes a big step backward by comparison.
4. Push e-mail reliability. For phones other than BBs, my company uses Good technology for interfacing with Outlook. Getting e-mail on my previous phones (Treo 650, Cingular 8125, etc.) that used Good Link was not reliable - I constantly had to use the "send/receive now" function to make sure my e-mail was up to date.
So far so good with the 750. I have gotten my e-mails reliably so far - it seems as good as my 8700.
5. Windows Mobile OS. One frequent complaint I hear about with Windows Mobile phones is that they lock up and need to be reset (soft or hard) frequently. Again, so far, so good for the 750. I did reset it yesterday because it went totally mute on me - no beeps, no notification sounds, no ringer on the phone! And no, I did not accidentally set the ringer switch to silent. After I reset it, all the sounds worked again. It's too early to tell whether this will be a persistent problem.
That's about all that comes to mind right now. I hope this helps anyone make up their mind about moving to this phone, especially if you would be leaving a BB 8700 behind.
So far, my regrets are minor, and I plan on learning to love this phone once I figure out how to deal with the battery problem. Good luck with yours.
