Need one gadget to do it all? The Motorola A1200 "Ming" phone is the answer. This Linux-powered PDA phone sports a 2-megapixel camera, a huge display, quad band support, plus all the bells and whistles you'd expect on a high-end handset, including Bluetooth, a music player, a document reader, and much more. And when you want to get down to business, there's even a business card reader for rapidly capturing contact info.
This unlocked cell phone can be used with a GSM network service provider and it provides quad-band connectivity (850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz). It does not come with a SIM card, and it requires that you provide a SIM card for usage with your selected service provider. This phone comes with a one-year warranty from a third party provider.
Design The first thing you'll notice about the Ming is that its design is definitely groundbreaking. While the transparent cover might look cool, it also serves a purpose, as the phone's speaker is cleverly embedded in the cover. Flip the phone open and you're greeted by a huge 2.4-inch touchscreen that sports 240 x 320 resolution and support for 262,000 colors. There's also an included stylus so you can control the unit's onscreen menus and functions. And speaking of menus and functions, the Ming's operating system offers an easy-to-use, Linux-based interface that makes navigating between entertainment, contact, document and other functions a breeze. You'll also find two control buttons, as well as a navigation joystick, below the display.
The Ming also supports MicroSD card expandability, which allows you to add up to 2 GB of extra storage to the device -- plenty of room for games, movies, and documents. There's a standard 2.5 mm headset jack, and a built-in mini-USB connector makes it easy to connect the Ming to your computer or other devices. Bluetooth wireless technology lets talk freely on a wireless headset or sync up seamlessly with your PC and other compatible Bluetooth devices. You can even print your favorite pictures wirelessly with the Ming's Bluetooth printing capability.
Calling Features The Ming has all the latest calling features folks have come to expect from a high-end handset. The built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names. As mentioned, the phone's Bluetooth connectivity means that your favorite Bluetooth headset is fully compatible. Plus, you can connect a stereo Bluetooth wireless headset and listen to your favorite music without any wires. Meanwhile, the ringer and picture ID system makes it easy to identify your most common callers. And last but not least, a vibrate mode allows you to receive calls in silence.
Messaging, Internet, and PDA Tools The Ming covers the messaging bases with support for text and MMS messaging, as well as IM-based communications with MSN Messenger. There's also a complete email client that allows you to receive and view PDF, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint attachments. The email client supports POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP protocols. An integrated browser lets you view complete HTML pages or surf the wireless Web via WAP 2.0.
On the PDA front, the Ming comes with a powerful calendar and contacts system that makes it easy to stay in touch with your important contacts while organizing your schedule. And because the Ming supports the SyncML synchronization standard, you can easily sync your PC-based contacts and schedule with the Ming's personal information management system. Other tools include an integrated business card scanner, a calculator, an alarm, a voice memo recorder, and a to-do list. You can use the Ming's advanced handwriting recognition to quickly and accurately enter information.
Entertainment The Ming's 2-megapixel camera features a macro mode for getting great closeups. You can also capture video clips; capture length is limited to a staggering two hours. Use the built-in RealPlayer application to view your videos, as well as videos you've got stored on a memory card. The integrated music player supports MP3, WAV, AMR, WMA, and AAC+ digital music formats. There's also a stereo FM radio.
If you're into mobile gaming, the Ming has you covered there, too. The phone ships with one game, Extreme Air Snowboarding.
Vital Statistics The Motorola A1200 Ming weighs 4.30 ounces and measures 3.77 x 2.04 x .85 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 7.4 hours of digital talk time, and up to 170 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the 850/900/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS frequencies. Motorola PEBL U6 Unlocked Phone with Camera, and Bluetooth--International Version with No Warranty (Orange) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I purchased the Orange PEBL (unlocked). I absolutely love the phone and always receive compliments on it. However, after 6 months of usage the handset volume just quit. I can only use the phone in speaker mode. So, basically the phone is now a glorified walkie talkie. After some online investigation, this seems to be a problem with unlocked PEBL phones. Apparently the issue can be corrected by "reflashing the firmware". Great, if you're tech savvy and don't mind downloading suspicious software.
Since the unlocked phones are not covered by warranty, I'd suggest just buying the phone through the carrier. It's worth it even if you have to pay more by not upgrading your plan. The amount you'd pay through the carrier would be about the same as buying it unlocked anyway.
In fact, if you're a T-mobile subscriber, phones purchased through T-mobile are still covered under a 2-year warranty, even if you don't purchase a plan. Hope this helps.

Motorola w755 Phone, Black (Verizon Wireless) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I spent 4 hours reading reviews on various cell phones, including two hours on the W755, before buying.
Overall, I couldn't be more pleased. I upgraded from an LG phone that was just over two years old. Several of the W755's features are one's that I either did not have available on the LG, or were ones that I was not impressed with on prior phones.
What a pleasant surprise the following were:
1. The speaker phone works very well. I had seen reviews complaining about the speaker phone function. Compared to the LG, this thing is paradise. It has plenty of volume and does not suffer from severe distortion.
2. Voice command: excellent, even without training. Most of my calls are made using voice command. I did learn over past years to enter names in my contact list "phoenetically", in other words, spell them out according to how they are most likely to be pronounced.
3. Verizon: a very nice utility to save your old phone's contact list to a web site, and then after activating the new phone, download the contact list to the new phone. Worked perfectly, first try! (also Auto-updating if you make future changes on your web-site contact list)
4. MP3 Player: worked better than I expected, even through the speaker phone. The free download of V-Cast Rhapsody software works very well for getting cuts from your computer on to the phone. I have a large MP3 collection and doing playlists on the computer and then drag/drop that playlist onto the W755 is as simple as it can get. (requires downloading and installing the proper motorola usb drivers...follow the Verizon V-Cast Rhapsody links...DO NOT go directly to Rhapsody, as you will end up with the wrong drivers and software not customized to the W755)
5. Camera: requires a steady hand and fluorescent lights require adjustment of color balance. The pictures are usable, but not up to "real" camera standards.
6. Blue Tooth: a very big surprise was the ability to send pictures wirelessly to the local Wal-Mart Kodak Picture Maker.
7. Blue Tooth Headset: I got two Motorola H710 headsets. They paired easily and work phenomenally well. The phone/headset pairing is remembered and initialized automagically, so future uses require no intervention other than opening the boom on the headset (assuming you have Blue Tooth turned on in the W755)
8. Ergonomics: fits the hand well, nicely reinforced hinge compared to the Razer. Larger buttons than I was used to (a real plus) and tactile feedback of button presses is welcome, as well. The display is large enough to not stress my aging eyes. Fits in my shirt pocket easily with two pens and a penlight, even with the double capacity battery. (I know, nerdy!)
9. Display Schemes: while several are offered, the "Youth" selection produces a clear, attractive and readily readable display.
10. Ring tones: I found a utility to send ring tones to the phone, and several sites that allow free access to ring tones, and one particular site that creates a ring tone from user entered text and generates morse code ring tones. I now have every person in my contact list set to spell out their name in morse code when they call. (obviously of limited utility to non-radio amateurs, but worth a mention)
11. Interfacing to Computer: the USB to mini-USB data cable has worked properly with both V-Cast/Rhapsody (for transferring MP3 files), and the aforementioned utility for moving ring tones to the W755. Auto-updating contact list via the web site works amazingly well and quickly (this is done via the wireless phone itself, no data connection required).
Cons:
1. Vibrate is weak. Not a factor for me, but I doubt it could ever be heard on a couch...I could just barely tell it was vibrating on a glass table, in a largish living room.
2. Memory card storage is inconveniently located under the battery compartment. Since I have a 2 gig card, I don't have much need to move it in and out of the phone, but it still isn't a great place to locate the card.
Summary:
I got two phones, one for the wife, who is NOT easily pleased. We are both happy with all aspects of the phone, as noted above. It is the best cell phone we have ever used, much less owned. Highly recommend both it and the Motorola H710 headset.

Motorola Ming A1200 Unlocked Phone with 2 MP Camera, MP3/Video Player, and MicroSD Slot--International Version with No Warranty (Black) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I bought this phone in China early March 2006. It was just on market for a week or so. I intended to buy a Microsoft Smartphone kind of device, but came upon this phone. The things that attracted me was the near perfect finish (black version only, feel like the early IBM Thinkpad T23 skin-like touch), the fast response, large screen, transparent screen cover and a unique feature: Business Card Reader(BCR).
The BCR take a snapshot of a business card, automatically recognize the information and input into contact list. The character recognition is not 100% if the business card design is too fancy. If the card is standard, with regular characters, the recognition result will be very accurate. It saves lots of time when you finish the job in a long day and rest in hotel room. Remember, you have to set the lens switch to Macro position, otherwise the card photo it takes will be blury and recognition is impossible. The switch is above the lens, very easy to miss.
Other features include the radio, recorder, bluetooth, Real Player, voice command, notes, 2.0 MP camera and camcorder.
Writing recognition is also very accurate. I write in Chinese and English. Both are very easy to use. Overall, the software are great.
It comes with other features such as getting online but I don't use them. You can add Transflash card inside. As of May 2006, the largest card size is 512MB for $70.
I don't think I digged all the goodies out, still in the fun process learning how to use it more wisely. Overall, it is a great phone, better than any other phone I ever used.

Motorola KRZR K1 Unlocked Phone with 2 MP Camera, MP3/Video Player, and MicroSD Slot--International Version with No Warranty (Cosmic Blue) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I just upgraded from a RAZR phone, and this new KRAZR is exceptionally nice. The phone has great reception, the sound quality & volumn are very good, the menus are very easy to get around,it fits your face well (not too short as many phones now are) and operating the phone is simple. This phone is clearly evident of Motorola's evolution in the cell-phone industry. By the way, you can customize the "soft-keys" to be whatever you want them to be. Likewise, you can customize the menus to appear as you would like. They have really thought of the user and have made this phone very User Friendly as well. It seems that the majority of the people I talk to aren't as interested in "whistles & bells" as much as they just want a plain old GOOD phone. This is it! However, if you want more, you can load your MP3 music on to it, you can use the calendar, you can take a picture, and if you are really adventurous, you can access the internet, and also retreive your email! By the way, this phone is capable of taking advantage of the Cingular/AT&T EDGE network which gives you 'faster than usual' internet. I highly recommend this Good Looking, Well Working phone.

Motorola MOTOZINE 5 MP Camera Phone, Black (T-Mobile) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I have had this phone for about a week, and have been able to put it through its paces.
Pros: The call voice quality and the picture quality are excellent. The MP3 player is also very good, and pauses when you receive a call. It can hold a 4Gig memory card, which will capture lots of full resolutions photos. The phone has bluetooth and wifi connectivity, and you can browse the web using a wifi connection. The handset itself is very ergonomic, and the test that I found on it shows it to have impressive durability.
(see [...])
The computer switches "modes" quickly, so that if you take the phone out of your pocket and flip open the lens cover, it behaves just like a regular digital camera and you can take a photo right away. Then, when you close the lens cover, it goes back to behaving like a phone.
Cons: The adjusting some of the settings takes a while to figure out, and it took me a while to figure out how to get the browser to use wifi, etc. The video recording mode is essentially useless. I have also found some problems with taking close up photos in low light, since the flash is too bright.

Motorola A1200 Unlocked Cell Phone with 2 Mp Camera, Mp3/video Player, Microsd Slot--international Version with No Warranty (Ming Black) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I received this unlocked phone from MobileCityOnline.com (via Amazon) in the last week or two. I've spent hours of time with tech support with Motorola trying to work out the kinks. Let's start by saying it's a very cool smartphone with tons of features. BUT - the caveat is that many would have only worked if I'd lived overseas.
First, the charger that came in the package is non-compatible with U.S. outlets, and so I purchased (at very low cost) another charger to get the phone working.
Then, although my manual was in English, the phone itself (menus, etc) were all in Chinese, presumably because it came from Hong Kong and was geared toward that area. Hence the first call to tech support.
After working through converting the language to English (I'd needed help navigating the menu's since they were all Chinese), I tried to do simple things like buy new ringtones and wallpaper.
Come to find out, no dice. These are not able to be downloaded in Atlanta (or U.S. period, apparently). Motorola tech support reported that they could not help as the phone model is not supported in the U.S. I am also unable to access the web.
I've spent too many hours with tech support in the short time I've owned this phone, and so I need to return it. I have never have needed to contact tech support for help with any other phone, and have never needed to return one.
Please be careful before you spend 259.00 on this model if you live in the U.S.
So, here I am today, spending more time (on a beautiful Saturday afternoon) making YET another call; this time to MobileCityOnline.com to return the phone.

Motorola RAZR V3 Unlocked Phone with Camera, and Video Player--International Version with No Warranty (Magenta Pink) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)Lets get one thing straight - you will never buy this phone for its features, so why give it a bad review because of its lack of features? This phone is meant for one thing -- Style. And not one other phone in the market comes close to this phone in style - and the sales of this phone prove it.
The signal strength on this phone is very good. In elevators where I didnt get signal with other phones, this phone picks up enough signal to carry the conversation through without any of those "didnt hear you - can you repeat that?". I really havent seen another GSM phone with signal quality as strong as this one, which is funny because this phone's antenna doesnt even stick out (internal antenna). Bluetooth audio is clear - I have verified this with the Jabra BT200 and the Motorola HS820.Camera is good, but not as good as some other phones out there. Video is good, not as good as other phones out there. No memory card. Here's the bottom line - if you want a phone that works like a good phone and looks damn good, this is the phone for you. If you want a phone that does videos / audio etc, then look elsewhere - or wait for the v3i.
Want a good looking phone with great voice quality? Buy this phone. Theres really no competition. Want a camera + camcorder + mp3 player + organizer + toaster? Skip it...

Motorola MING2 A1600 Unlocked Phone with 3.2 MP Camera, gps navigation, Stereo Bluetooth, Media Player, and MicroSD Slot--International Version with No Warranty (Black) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I purchased my first Ming about 3 years ago and when I lost the first one, I went straight to the AT&T store and purchased an iPhone. Compared to my Ming, the iPhone was an iJoke! So I returned it, paid the $40 restocking fee, and ordered another Ming immediately. Recently, I upgraded to the Ming A1600, and I absolutely love it. For someone who uses her phone as much as I do for both business and personal purposes, this phone is ideal.
The only problem so far is that I have not been able to find a site to download an English version of the GPS map system, so my GPS is in Chinese! However, because I love this phone so much, I might have to learn Chinese just for the GPS system if I can't find the English map.
In sum, Motorola Ming A1600 is a FANTASTIC product with a multitude of amazing features and applications that are suitable for both business and personal uses. I highly recommended it.

Motorola RAZR V3 Black Phone (AT&T) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)The V3 Razr has had a lot of problems. The main one is a consistent buzzing sound in many of them that both you and the person you're calling can hear. It's apparently a bad ground in the handset somewhere. The only fix is to replace the handset. I went through three of them before giving up. After reading good reviews of the V3xx Razr, I went against my better judgement and got one. The V3xx is everything the V3 *should* have been. Better features, 3G, excellent call quality, good handset volume without having to hack a gain table, etc. Do yourself a favor. If you like the Razr form factor like I do, go for the V3xx. Be advised though that most cases for the V3 will not work with the V3xx because it's slightly larger.

Motorola RAZR V3m Silver Phone (Verizon Wireless) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)---Pros and Cons:
P: popular model, so accessories are plentiful
C: popular model, so you're not unique
P: VZ Navigator (VZN) for $10/mo is very useful... Voice navigation with street names being read aloud is nice.
C: It uses minutes to re-calculate routes, so it's not unlimited usage
P: VZN doesn't need the $15/mo VCast
C: ..which is nice if you don't use VCast, but the point is that there's no way to get unlimited VZN use.
P: Speakerphone is loud
C: ..but not loud enough when driving
P: Voice prompt person/phone number lookup is great
C: ..but sometimes still requires pushing a button, making it not truly hands-free
P: mp3/mpeg4/jpg playback is neat; convert video to 3GP using a tool called "SUPER" - www.erightsoft.com
C: controls are clunky, screen resolution small, no full-screen support
P: expandable memory for 1GB of mp3/mpeg4/jpg
C: you need to remove the battery cover and battery to gain access to it
P: lightweight, slim metal housing
C: easily scratched; I bought a $25 skin at shildzone.com
P: easily readable display, keys
C: 176 x 220 resolution and 65k color depth is pretty low
P: Verizon interface is faster than the Moto interface
C: verizon interface... yuck, yuck, yuck
P: V3m supports BT Dial-Up-Networking (DUN) profile so you can use your phone as a high-speed modem
C: While it does work, if you plan on doing more than just testing it out, the Terms of Service require you purchase a data plan for ~$50/mo. It's a shame they don't have flexible day/week plans for the occasional traveler.
---Cons with hackable resolutions:
C: Vibrate + Ring is disabled
C: BT OBEX is disabled
C: Motorola Phone Tools Multimedia button disabled
C: self-imported mp3 ringtones are disabled
= all have unofficial work-arounds; see mark.cdmaforums.com
---Cons with no resolutions:
C: BREW instead of Java - which means a very limited number of games and apps
C: I have average-sized hands, and find the 4-way button and the middle button to be difficult to press.
C: Signal at my house, in the middle of a metropolis, is 0-1 bars
C: one day of standby + 5-6 calls + 15-minute VZN usage = 50% battery. Woah, go CDMA...
C: the 1.3MPixel camera takes worse photos than my VGA camera from 1997 - I'm not kidding.
C: the video camera is absolutely pointless
C: As much as I enjoy VZN, it loses signal once in while, which left me in some uncomfortable situations.
C: With a subpar web browser and non-live TV clips, I found VCast to be absolutely pointless. Sprint's live TV feed definitely adds more value.
C: CDMA, so this phone won't work overseas.
---Conclusion:
All in all, a decent phone that's great for someone looking for a slim CDMA phone with expandable memory, mp3/mpeg4 playback, and Navigation. As a previous GSM customer, the Verizon lockdown of the phone is just mind-boggling, but at least they can be disabled with some work. If I wasn't being forced to go Verizon, I'd still go GSM. Good luck!

Motorola RIZR Z3 Cosmic Blue Phone (T-Mobile) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I have had my RIZR from T-Mobile for a few weeks now after switching from Verizon. I was originally considering the Nokia 5300. But when I compared the 2 phones side by side, the RIZR seemed more solid, more durable and less flimsy than the Nokia 5300. So I chose the RIZR and I could not be happier. The phone is easy to program and a breeze to use. The display is bright, clear and very easy to read (even without my bifocals!). So far the sound quality and reception have been outstanding. The best feature for me is the mp3 player. With my new RIZR I can transfer mp3 songs directly from my computer to my phone with a simple drag and drop (the 128 MB card is not very large, but enough for my needs). I can then select the songs to act as ringtones. Being able to assign a song/ringtone to a certain phone number is a really cool feature, at least for me.
The mp3 player included with the phone is very easy to use too.
My only "minor" gripe is the screen goes black during calls. But I found pressing the volume up button, which displays the volume screen temporarily, brings the main screen back fast enough for me.
All in all a great phone and highly recommended.

Combining an innovative slider design with an impressive set of multimedia features, the sleek Motorola RIZR V3 fits in with your fast-moving digital life with a dash of style and a full range of T-Mobile services (including MyFaves). It's packed with all the latest mobile technology, including a 2-megapixel camera (with video capture capability), stereo Bluetooth compatibility, voice-activated calling, photo caller ID, and instant messaging via Yahoo!, MSN, AOL, or ICQ. Other features include a 20 MB memory, expansion via MicroSD memory cards, and up to 3 hours of talk time. Available exclusively from T-Mobile, it communicates over GSM/GPRS and EDGE networks. This model comes in cosmic blue with a soft-touch finish, but it's also available in rose.
The RIZR V3 features an ultra smooth slider, where you can push on a bar located under the screen to open the spring-loaded sliding top portion of the phone. Once slid upward, the phone's easy-to-use standard keypad is revealed--which is precision cut from a single sheet of nickel-plated copper alloy--as well as an abstract tattoo on the reverse side. A large 176 x 220 color display with 262,000 colors is included at the top of the slider. You won't have to constantly slide the phone open to access controls, thanks to most of the controls for the phones features and on-screen accessed via the five-way center button on the handset's upper slider. The RIZR V3 also includes a full range of function buttons on the side (including keys for voice commands, activating the camera, and menu selection).
Hidden behind the RIZR V3's eye-catching design is a powerful digital camera that features an LED flash, an 8x zoom, brightness control, full-screen viewfinder, and a night mode. You can choose to shoot in four sizes--2 megapixel, 1.3 megapixel, 640x80 pixels, and 320x240 pixels--as well as choose from three quality settings. Other camera features include a multishot option, an adjustable exposure setting, a self-timer, six color effects, five lighting choices, and five shutter sounds (plus a silent option). In addition to still photos, the RIZR V3 can capture video clips with sound (in two resolutions--176 x 144 pixels and 128 x 96 pixels). Videos can be shot for as long as you have available memory, while videos meant for MMS messaging are capped at 6 seconds(T-Mobile messaging charges apply).
The phone is capable of MPEG4 video playback when you receive a video message, or if you upload video to the phone via USB or Bluetooth. The RIZR Z3 also supports custom graphics for wallpapers so you can dress up the phone to suit your fancy.
The RIZR Z3 also offers a full-featured digital audio player, compatible with MP3, AAC, AAC+, and eAAC+ (enhanced) files. Music files are stored on optional MicroSD memory cards, which can be transferred from your PC via USB or Bluetooth wireless connectivity. And because the phone supports the A2DP Bluetooth stereo profile, you can wireless stream music to compatible Bluetooth-enabled stereo headphones, enabling completely untethered music enjoyment.
Instant messaging is also supported--enabling communication via Yahoo!, MSN, AOL, or ICQ--and the phone ships with a built-in email client. The RIZR also comes stock with a built-in web browser for t-zones downloads and mobile web browsing. T-Mobile's t-Zones service lets you receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more.
The RIZR Z3's internal phone book can hold up to six phone numbers and three addresses per entry, while the phone's picture ID system allows you to assign pictures to your most common callers. It also supports polyphonic ringtones as well as MP3 ringers, allowing you to use portions of your favorite songs to alert you to incoming calls. A number of ringtones come preloaded on the phone. There's even an included application, MotoMixer, that lets you mix your own ringtones. A built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear, and it includes a vibrating alert for those times when discretion is required. Because the RIZR Z3 is Bluetooth enabled, wireless headsets can be configured with the phone for total handsfree operation. And the RIZR's voice dialing feature makes calling family, friends, and business associates as easy as saying their names.
Other calling features include compatibility with T-Mobile's myFaves service, which allows you to call up to five of your most common contacts--on any network, even landlines--without using any of your minutes. Learn more about myFaves.
iTap text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit--a plus for mobile email and text messaging users. With its Bluetooth or USB data capability, the phone can be easily used as a wireless modem for laptops and PDAs for high-speed data transfer over the supported EDGE network.
A number of handy software tools are bundled with the RIZR Z3 including a voice memo recorder, a calculator with currency converter, a calendar and an alarm clock. Use the phone's Bluetooth capability to set up a wireless link with a Bluetooth accessory or connect to a computer or hand-held device to exchange and synchronize data. The phone also supports the SyncML PC synchronization standard, and it can be used with Motorola's Mobile Phone Tools PC application to manage and synchronize contacts, calendar, and other data with your PC.
