(More customer reviews)one word describes this phone: clunky. not just physically clunky, though it is, but also functionally clunky. the touch screen is not very responsive, which makes basic things like accessing contacts or changing settings very cumbersome. that said, it is a good texting phone; the keypad is very comfortable and responsive, and you can just slide the screen to access messages. there is also good sound when you are on a call. the biggest drawback to this phone is the touch screen isn't that great.

(More customer reviews)I've had the 6820 from back in the days of AT&T Wireless and absolutely loved it: QWERTY keyboard that is exceptionally easy to use, Bluetooth, GSM/works in europe, great battery life, and it's compact and secure.
I mention "secure" in the sense that the settings stay where you lock them. I've had so many phones that change ring volume settings, turn themselves off, unlock themselves or even call people when the phone is in my front pocket. This phone is small enough to carry in my pocket (instead of the lame hip-holsters)and my pants don't end up calling my friends or colleagues.
After some time, the 6820 inevitably broke, and by then it was off the market. Oddly, it was the ringer that broke--the flip mechanism is quite robust.
But then I was stuck without a phone. I sure didn't want a dingleberry, or a Treo. I would always joke at those folks by holding a notebook up to my ear and saying "Hello?" I want a phone, not a small laptop that can read .xls files. But the choices were slim.
I really wanted QWERTY because using SMS can be really convenient and I can't stand using T9. And I needed bluetooth for the car, and GSM for europe.
My only choice was to try that new Samsung SGH-D307 with the flip out keyboard. I was shocked how poor that is. The menu system is so dis-integrated that as one review puts it "you have to actively ignore what the buttons say, and use buttons that indicate things you DON'T want to do." Talk about cognitive dissonance. Oh, and the QWERTY doesn't work for anything other than SMS. So you can't even use it for entering addresses. QWERTY is supposed to let you avoid T9 predictive text, but the Samsung is so ill-developed, QWERTY only works for SMS and IM. Uugh.
There was literally no decent solution on the market until the 6822 was released. The only downside to the origial 6820 was its mediocre camera and screen resolution, both of which are addressed in the 6822.
Just don't order through nokiausa--it's customer service is so infuriatingly poorly run that you'll pop a few blood vessels. My order for this in-stock product languished for 10 days. Yes, I even upgraded to FedEx next-day, but nokia had no problem with my order being in the "not yet processed" state. Hmmm? So I call in several times find out about the delay and they would say that the order was not authorized because "the address information was wrong." I'm pretty sure I know my own address, and having my order number, I could see I had not made a typo.
So I called AMEX and they (of course) confirmed my billing address, but moreover said they hadn't declined my card due to AVS mismatch. Hmmm. Did nokia even try to process my order? I doubt it. I even had a nokiausa supervisor hang up on me when I asked her name for reference.
So after many calls and several hours of my time, I couldn't get to the root of the problem. Customer service couldn't help because the problem was allegedly in billing, but yet they wouldn't allow me to talk to billing. "That's not an option." the supervisors would tell me. They would assure me that their billing department would call me, but that never happened. I could never find out what billing was saying to AMEX. But again, according to AMEX, they never declined my card so either nokiausa billing department was lying about an AVS problem with my order, or they are so broken they were submitting someone else's information. In any case, try as I might, the 'problem' couldn't be identified, much less solved, so I had no choice but to give up. What a huge waste of time.
Bottom line: the 6822 is a fabulously small QWERTY, bluetooth, multimedia camera, GSM phone with no extraneous features or extra size. I heartily recommend buying it. The Finns know how to build a great phone. They're just not as successful as running a US order and customer service center that you can count on.

This update to the wildly popular Nokia 6820 ups the ante with a more vibrant screen, an improved camera and sleek new colors. Nokia was smart not to change much else with the 6822; the same innovative fold-out QWERTY keyboard is here, plus support for EDGE high speed data, Bluetooth, and a speakerphone.
Design At first, the 6822 looks like a mild-mannered candybar phone. Looks can be deceiving, though. Flip the phone open and you're presented with a full QWERTY keyboard. The 128 x 128 display, which features support for 65,000 colors, automatically rotates for horizontal viewing -- making it easy to type emails and text messages. An internal antenna means there's nothing to snag in your pocket. When the phone is in the closed position, a five-way center button above the handset's dial pad controls most of the phone's functions. Meanwhile, a USB-compatible port for data synchronization and wireless modem functionality is provided on the bottom of the unit. The phone's VGA (640 x 480) camera unit is located on the rear of the device.
Calling Features The 6822's address book can store multiple phone numbers, as well as physical and email addresses. Meanwhile, the phone's built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Polyphonic ringtones are included, as is a vibrating alert. Ringer IDs let you assign specific ringtones to particular callers, while picture ID technology lets you similarly assign images or pictures to callers. Name-based voice recognition dialing lets you dial numbers with the sound of your voice. Lastly, the phone's Bluetooth connectivity means that your favorite Bluetooth headset is fully compatible.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools The 6822's QWERTY keyboard makes it a natural mobile messaging and email companion. With support for the MMS (multimedia messaging service), the phone can send picture, video and text messages. When coupled with the 6822's camera, MMS opens up great opportunities for robust messaging. Instant messaging is also supported, and the phone ships with a built-in email client that supports POP3 and IMAP protocols, as well as BlackBerry push email services.
Getting on the Internet is easy with the 6822, too. It supports the GPRS data protocol, as well as the new, high-speed EDGE wireless data service. When used with a carrier data plan and the phone's USB or Bluetooth data capability, the phone can be used as a wireless modem for laptops and PDAs. There's also a built-in web browser for downloads and mobile web browsing. T9 text entry, a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

(More customer reviews)This is a great low-cost Sony Ericsson phone. I've owned a lot of different phones in the past from the Samsung SGH-D900 (Black Carbon), Sony Ericsson W800i, Apple iPhone 2G, and Apple iPhone 3G. Compared to those phones, I would have to rate this phone just as good as those.
Physically the phone is built quite well. There is a slider which protects the camera lens and allows you to take photos when open. The phone has good reception (especially compared to my Samsung SGH-D900), the voices come through clear during phone calls, and the built in speaker has great sound (especially with MP3's and other music.
Also the built in web-browser does a great job but I really must recommend that you download Opera Mini. Pages load in around 2 seconds in 3G or HSDPA (in Denver) it seems as opposed to the Sony Browser which takes around 5 seconds +. What I also like is that the text messages can be displayed in a conversational text which looks like instant messaging. Those familiar with the iPhone texting will be right at home with this.
The only few negatives I could think of is that the camera is only 3.2 megapixel, there's no zoom on the camera unless you're in VGA mode, there's only an LED flash (no Xenon), and my IM (instant messaging) program was missing (I downloaded a new one).
Overall I'm going to have to rate this phone a 4 out of a 5. Mostly for it's features and it's price point.

+ Texting is perfect, threading each person is convenient
+ Web browsing (to mobile supported sites) is fantastic
+ RSS feed implementation is flawless, love browsing headlines first
+ My gmail account works nicely in the browser
+ Notes app is quite useful
+ Intuitive
+ Pictures are great
+ Facebook is nice, more so if I didn't have to sign in each time
+ Display is beautiful
- Shaky javascript support...no online banking with my banks site
- Texting has its own memory set aside; I often get a memory full error
- Text messages during phone conversations are annoying; it beeps in your ear repeatedly
- The screen shuts off during phone use
- Default ringtones are lame and I can't use my own MP3s
- Video support...YouTube works, that's about it
- [...] doesn't show up...along with other sites that are heavy in JS
- Too few ways to customize notifications
- Aside from music, getting things on to the phone is frustrating
- Bluetooth is close to useless
- Screen scratches easily
- It's hard to pin-point what you are clicking with your finger...even after calibration
- No app store
- Viewing photos is quirky; sometimes they will scroll on their own or exit the photo viewer
- Deleting large amounts of text and multimedia texts can freeze the phone
- No video support (outside Vcast, which Verizon is phasing out?)
- Battery life is brutal; I use all of it in 10 hours while at work (browsing and texting)
- Conversations kind of sound like the other person is in a tin can
Overall, this device is good for texting. Things as standard as using a custom ringtone are missing. The beautiful display is wasted without uploaded video support.
Maybe some of this stuff will be fixed in a software patch...although it kind of feels like Samsung released the phone and then forgot about it. I don't expect updates soon, if at all.

Bottom line: texting, YouTube, and RSS feeds are the big draws while the lack of customization and multimedia support are the big drawbacks.

(More customer reviews)OK, maybe I liked my Motorola KRZR a little too much. I really LOVED that phone. And then I lost it. Yep, could have killed myself. But, I had to get a new phone and I got this one.
The first thing it did was pinch me when I opened it. You have to be careful of that. The volume buttons on the side of the phone are in a bad place. I keep screwing up the volume when I talk. The same buttons adjust the ring volume, so I have set my phone to vibrate on more than one occasion, missing calls. The screen is also smaller, and I found the KRZR a little easier to navigate. I also liked the size of the KRZR. This phone seems clunky.
This phone does get the job done, but I expected more from it since it was made by Motorola. Somehow, it just feels cheap.
I am looking for another KRZR, but Verizon doesn't seem to have those anymore.

I really love this phone and would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to buy a good phone with Verizon Wireless. I am writing this review after having the phone for over a month and a half with no problems!
It has a beautiful rich red color that makes the phone look trendy and also sexy.
It's not sleek but it's not as big as the LG the V and not very thick either. It's not heavy at all...that's what I liked about this phone.
The camera is 3.0 MP! That's huge for Verizon as most of the phones they have are either 1.0 or 2.0 MP and the qualities of those cameras aren't even that nice (but my old LG the V was really good with taking pictures from it's 1.0 MP camera). The pictures I've taken with my Flipshot come out really nice and very big! You need to have a micro SD card if you want to save your pictures so that it doesn't take over all of the phone's built in memory - but you can save a good amount of pictures even without the card.
The really cool thing about this phone is the swivelhead. You can rotate the flip a full 360 degrees so that the main screen is facing you when you close the flip and it automatically goes into camera/camcorder mode so you can take pictures exactly how you would using the screen on a digital camera. The main screen is very big.
Now if you use the phone to listen to music, this thing is really good with it. You can listen with the speakers on the phone - the speakers are on both sides of the phone just below where the headjack is. And it's super loud! Whenever my phone rings or I want to listen to music, it omits sound that you can hear from almost any room of the house. You can upload your music into the micro SD card and then insert it in the phone. Now the SD card slot is actually right next to the battery. You have to open the back cover and you will see right above the battery a small little slot to put your SD card in. You just slide it through the groves and voila! That's it...now you can save your pictures and listen to your music right from the phone! From what I know, I think you can put up to 4GB SD card into the phone....I don't know if it can fit a bigger card then that.
The other thing is the play/pause, forward and rewind button - they are located in the front but are not visible unless you slide your finger right above the Verizon logo....it's touch screen so it will light up red and you will see the play, forward and rewind button. I don't know if how I'm explaining it is right, but it's there...for those of you who like using the front buttons of your phone to play music, it's there in the front as a touchscreen. I thought that was a pretty neat.
Now the front main screen has a clock you can see - you can set it so either you see it as a digital clock, or as analog, or have it set so that you don't have to see anything on the front screen except for your picture wallpaper. I did that and I can see my picture in the front without the clock blocking my view. When you open the Flipshot to reveal the main screen, you can do the same thing; you go to Settings and Tools, go to Display Settings and Clock Format and change it so that you don't see the digital clock displayed - you can only see your wallpaper picture. I did that and I like it better since I am always somewhere where there's a clock. You can always change the settings back later if you use your cell as a watch.
The Flipshot also has other features such as a stopwatch - good for people who are running and want to have a stop watch to time themselves and also good for those who are studying for tests and need to time themselves.
You can text message using your voice - when you text message someone, you can go to voice mode and holding the voice button on the side, speak out your text message. You just have to be in a very quiet room and speak slowly so it can understand what you're saying. After you're done, you release the button and if there are any mistakes in the message, it will correct itself! It's awesome!
You can send text messages, picture messages, video messages, sketch messages and postcards to your friends - sketch messages are basically messages with a picture except that as soon as you select sketch message, your phone will prompt you to take a picture. As soon as you do, it becomes a sketch...it literally looks like someone took a pencil and drew out what you just took a picture of! And then you can send that on to your family or friends! It's awesome! The postcard basically takes a picture you already have and then you take another photo that is sketched on top of the picture you selected to send. Another cool thing you can do is you can program the phone so that you can see your text message without having to open to the main screen, although you can only reply using the main screen.
For those of you who like putting in your own ringtones - the phone itself doesn't come with any good ringtones...just some basic ones. But here are two ways to get your own ringtones without having to pay over 2 bucks for them:
The first way:
1. Get Bitpim software from Bitpim.org
2. Use the software to make your own ringtones (it will ask for you to connect the phone via bluetooth or USB cable but you can say you don't have one)
3. Create your ringtones
4. Right click on your ringtone and click on save, and save it to your My Sounds folder in your mini SD card (after formatting the card with the phone you will get a bunch of folders including My_Sounds that you can save sounds into)
5. Insert the Mini SD card back into your phone and then text yourself with the sound, then save it as a ringtone!
The second way:
Go to any website that gives away free ringtones like www.myxertones.com. You can use the website to make your own ringtones and wallpapers or get some already made by people on there, and have the website text you. Once you get the text, you can save the ringtone. Unfortunately if you want to send the ringtone to someone else via text, you won't be able to because the ringtones from MyxerTones are under Digital Rights Management (DRM) and prohibits copyright information from being sent. However if you follow the first method above, you should be able to send your own homemade ringtones to other people through text (picture messaging actually).
That's about it for my review. I honestly love this phone...there are so many features, some of which I may not have mentioned on here. It's a great bargain to get this phone and I know you will enjoy it.
Oh here is one thing - when I got my Flipshot for the first time, it did have a problem of not charging my battery...I kept getting a message that said "battery temprature too low, cannot charge phone" and it wouldn't let me charge so I went and exchanged it right away and the new one didn't give me any problems. The first batch of new phones have had some problems but you can get it exchanged and it'll be fine.
The phone has a speakerphone that works very well. I have had no problems with my speakerphone - the other caller can hear me and I can hear them loud and clear!
The basic Verizon menu is no longer there. You have three different schemes to access your menu - it can be either a camera which is the default menu background you see, or can change it to cappuccino background and format, or you can use the menu the way you're used to with the original Verizon format.
Also you can program the phone so that it can play a xylophone sound everytime you press a button - sounds more pleasing to the ear.
You can very easily install your bluetooth headset so you can talk on the cell phone.

Samsung Gravity 2 Phone, Metallic Pumpkin (T-Mobile) Review

(More customer reviews)Since the feature list of the Gravity 2 is readily available here on Amazon, I would simply like to mention a few things with regards to using/handling this phone:
The Good:
- The Gravity 2 has an ok quality feel, which especially extends to sliding out the keyboard - an important point considering how often this feature is used.
- The keyboard itself is comfortable to handle and not too small, even for bigger hands and fingers. The keys are responsive and are easy to hit correctly.
- Size, weight and height of the phone are very comfortable, not bulky.
- All functions (contacts, messaging, settings, organizer etc.) are fairly easy to access via the menu button.
- The display is clear and contrast-rich, sound quality is not outstanding but good enough.
Things I don't like:
- The Gravity 2 is quite "slippery". I have almost dropped it on more than one occasion. A somewhat rubberized surface material, especially on the backside, would have been much preferred.
- Power-up time is fairly long. When turned on, the phone displays a progress bar which seems to be inching along. My old Nokia 6133 was much faster in that regard.
- I picked this model specifically because it had the voice dialing feature which I have used heavily on my last two phones. However, I was extremely disappointed to learn that voice dialing is buried somewhere deep inside the phone's functions which basically renders it useless. In order to access this, one has to press several buttons - now where is the advantage in that when it comes to hands-free dialing? Having to first press buttons to use voice dialing is counter-productive!
- I feel that this phone's volume setting could be improved. Even on the loudest setting I don't think it is loud enough. When I am in a noisier setting like a restaurant and carry the Gravity 2 in my purse, chances are that I will not hear it. Again something where my old Nokia was much better.
All in all an ok phone but I don't think I would buy it again specifically because of the impossible voice dialing setup and the limited ring tone volume.
UPDATE August 2010:
After having owned this phone for 8 months I must report that it has a tendency to go completely dead on a moment's notice. The battery is fully charged so this has nothing to do with that. I suspect that the battery suddenly loses contact with the phone, causing it to go blank. The only way to get the phone to work again is to remove and re-seat the battery. The latter is a chore with a capital "C" because there is no grip anywhere to slide the back panel off to actually get to the battery. As a matter of fact I have not once succeeded with that and always had to have my husband do it for me, it is that difficult. BTW, I never dropped or otherwise abused this phone so this is obviously a design flaw... I adjusted my rating from 3 stars down to 2 stars for that, especially after searching the web and finding that many other people have this problem with this phone.

LG Aloha Prepaid Phone (Virgin Mobile) Review

(More customer reviews)I'm not really a fan of cell phones because of the silly and discourteous ways they're used by so many. But there are times they come in handy, even for me.
I make three or four business trips a year, plus an out-of-town vacation or two, and the cell phone is really a major convenience on those occasions. But the absence of one has never bothered me enough to make me commit to an expensive phone, much less a long-term contract.
I noticed some prepaid phones at a supermarket a few months ago, and did a little research. I was able to get the Aloha for $19.99, bought a $20 card for Virgin Mobile service, and was up and running for only $40.
So far, I've used the phone in Cleveland, Denver and Phoenix with good results. No dropped calls, and pretty good call quality. The phone is easy enough to use that you won't forget how if you put it away for a few days, and the storage of contacts, plus the scheduler make the phone worth the money and then some.
If you're a cell phone buff, or want to impress your friends, this isn't the phone for you. No camera or outside display. Volume could be a little louder, and you've got to position the phone just right for best results. But at this price, it's a great phone for the light user, or as a temporary phone, or for someone who does not have good credit or prefers not to give out a credit card number.
If you fall into these categories, the Aloha is an excellent choice.

Vital Statistics The LG Aloha weighs 2.7 ounces and measures 3.5 x 1.9 x 0.9 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 3 hours of talk time, and up to 150 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the CDMA 1900 frequency.
