Buen sonido

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Review

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had my XpressMusic for a few months now. I bought it because I wanted a smartphone. Rather than trying to fit myself to the iPhone crowd, I did research to find a phone that fits me. I'd read about the 5800 being touted as an "iPhone Killer", but such talk is silly simply because the XpressMusic isn't the same animal nor does Nokia bring enough to the table to even come close to Apple's market saturation and "Joe & Jane user" appeal.
The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is an excellent phone for people who love media: it's got a browser for streaming, easy-to-use software for transfers of your own files, and it even has a built-in FM radio for listening to local stations (with the added bonus of being able to tag and label them). The screen is approximately the size of the screen on a Nintendo DS or a Sony PSP, with the difference being that colors are bright, resolution is sharp, and the backlight is superior. Power button, standard headphone adapter, charge plug and USB connector are all on the top, making it easy to access but conveniently out of the way. The touch screen is unlocked via a rocker key on the side, and volume can easily be adjusted up or down along the same edge.
In addition to this, you can expect all the same features you find in most smartphones today: GIS-driven mapping systems, Internet connectivity via WiFi (if, like me, you're not on an unlimited data plan), a multitude of Bluetooth capabilities, integration with a PC or Mac via the USB Cable, and of course a digital camera that takes good (but not great) pictures and video. One nice extra here is that if you hold the phone like a camera, a button on top will quickly switch the phone to camera mode and also double as your auto-focus and picture-taking button.
I like the feel of this phone, and I definitely like the clarity and strength of the calls. There are times when it appears that I have only one bar, but still can place clear and noise-free calls that don't disconnect. The software is regularly kept up to date, and once you get through the process of setting up an account at the Ovi Store, it is remarkably easy to download and install applications, many of which are free (but only some of which are useful).
The one big drawback--and it is a serious one--is the interface. Features and Applications are in two separate sections, and sometimes the dividing line between which is which is not exactly clear. The auto-rotate that switches from Portrait to Landscape can go off at the slightest of bumps, and I have to shake the phone and wait for it to re-set. I bought the phone because I wanted a good, solid handwriting device, and this is where I have been most disappointed. Despite being a whiz at PDAs, despite training (and re-training) the phone to my handwriting, I get many botched translations. I have to force myself to scribe slowly because the delay time between reading my strokes and rendering a character is noticeably long. I have to patiently re-do most of my strokes over and over. To give credit where credit is due, Nokia gives you a slim stylus cleverly hidden along the side of the phone, and then they throw in a hip little gadget called a "plectrum": it's a triangular guitar-pick that makes a handy substitute for a fingernail--consider this for pointing and clicking and the stylus for handwriting.
There is, however, one sin that seems unforgivable, and I'm surprised that a year and a half down the road, the updates still haven't addressed it:
The phone dialer has no letters on it.
Let me rewind that: if you call up the dialer in other areas of the phone (such as via contacts), you will see the letters imprinted on the dial pad. However, if you want to dial a number with letters in it (say, "1-800-FLOWERS"), you are out of luck: the dialer shown when dialing the phone does not display any letters. The fact that the letters are imprinted elsewhere in the system, but not where they are most important, is what makes the lack of this "fix" annoying.
Also, while the software is easy to use, it is also incredibly slow and buggy in Windows Vista or Windows 7. The interface often turns black and I have to scrub my mouse over the window to re-draw my menus and panels.
If you really like media and want a phone for music, pictures, and video, the 5800 XpressMusic is not bad. However, if you're looking for a pocket-sized computer that can do whiz-kid propeller-head tricks, the 5800XpressMusic will most likely disappoint, especially given its price. As much as I appreciate what Nokia was trying to do with this phone, it really wasn't significantly different from my Motorola RAZR.
NOTE: I cannot confirm that this is true of all Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phones, but the "USA" Phone that was shipped to me contained a European power adapter. This huge chunk of plastic contains a converter to allow it to plug into US electrical outlets, but it also means that your charger is anything but pocket-sized. I sent mine in for a replacement, only to discover that the replacement also contained the same "Euro-plus-converter-widget" charger.

Average Reviews:

I ordered this to replace my 2-year-old G1, which I love. I was only expecting to receive the actual phone itself, since I didn't see anything in the description that indicated otherwise. However, it came in the original box, with all of the extras that came with my first G1 (SD card, USB cord, charger, etc.) It had obviously never been used, which was nice, since you are never really sure if what you're buying is what you're going to get. The only thing that kept me from giving 5 stars was that I had to return the phone because Google is no longer providing firmware updates for the G1, and therefore I was unable to use some of the apps that had become rather important to me! Bummer. :-(

Designed specifically for extensive mobile email usage, the Nokia E61i smartphone has a slimmer profile than its predecessor, the E61. It also sports a mocha-colored trim and 2-megapixel digital camera on the back (which can also record video). Other features include Wi-Fi capability, Bluetooth connectivity, MicroSD memory card slot, Symbian OS, and up to 5 hours of talk time. It does not come with a SIM card, and it requires that you provide a SIM card for usage with your selected service provider. This phone comes with a one-year warranty from a third party provider.
It has a full QWERTY keyboard with backlighting for effortless email and text messaging, and it replaces the E61's joystick with a two-piece Navi scroll key with a central button for making selections and a raised, square outer frame for directional controls. It includes individual keys for email (with an LED indicator showing new messages), contacts, and an Own key, which can be configured to open any application. The E61i has a bright 2.8-inch TFT screen that offers a 320 x 240-pixel resolution and up to 16 million colors.
The 2-megapixel camera on the back of the phone will shoot images up to 1600 x 1200 pixels (good enough for 8 x 10-inch prints), and it includes a 4x digital zoom and a self timer. For video recording, it offers a 352 x 288-pixel resolution shot at 15 frames per second, and it's compatible with MPEG-4 and H.236 video formats. You can mix your business with quite a bit of pleasure, as the E61i supports playback of MP3 and AAC audio files, as well as streaming and stored video files. Connect a Pop-Port stereo headset, load up your tunes and videos to a memory card, and you've got some serious entertainment in your hand. Picture effects and custom screensavers, as well as backgrounds and themes, can be set up to fit your personality. And don't forget that the E61i is a powerful gaming companion with support for Java and Symbian games.
With support for the MMS (multimedia messaging service), the E61i can send picture, video and text messages. Instant messaging is also supported, and the phone ships with a built-in email client that supports POP3, IMAP, and SMTP protocols, as well as Microsoft Office-based email attachments. A robust set of push email and wireless synchronization solutions are provided, including Activesync for Exchange and Outlook, Intellisync, BlackBerry Connect, and Goodlink.
Getting on the Internet is easy with the E61i. It supports the GPRS data protocol, as well as high-speed EDGE wireless data service and UMTS (UMTS/WCDMA 2100 MHz) 3G wireless broadband. When used with a carrier data plan and the phone's USB or Bluetooth data capability, the phone can also be used as a wireless modem for laptops and PDAs. And don't forget the E61i's Wi-Fi capability, which makes high-speed data access a breeze via an 802.11g hotspot.
The E61i's innovative built-in browser, one of many enhancements included with the device's Symbian operating system--known as Series 60 9.1 Version 3--offers full HTML viewing as well as support for page zooming, CSS, JavaScript and other technologies that will bring you very close to a desktop PC browsing experience.
The E61i supports PC synchronization standards via USB or Bluetooth, which means you can manage and synchronize contacts, calendars and other data with your PC. Nokia's PC Suite application makes this process a breeze. A number of handy software tools are bundled with the device, including a voice memo recorder, a calculator, and an alarm clock. Productivity tools bundled with the E61i include a word processor, a presentation viewer/editor, a spreadsheet viewer/editor, PDF viewer, and a zip file manager. Nokia 5530 XpressMusic Unlocked Phone with Touchscreen--U.S. Version with Warranty (Black) Review

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic Unlocked Phone with Touchscreen--U.S. Version with Warranty (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a late adapter when it comes to cell phones. So refrained from Iphones and vu/touch phones as one was mostly tied to a provider data plan or had to pay a premium for the phone itself.
If you dont care about 3g (read data plan 29.99 a month) or GPS there cannot be a better phone at this price range. Solidly built, some reviews complained about back cover. I do see an issue there as it get on the phone with little notches on all sides. But how may times you open that. Specially when SIM/SDHC is accessible from outside. The only time you need to open the back cover is when you install a battery.
What I love about this phone in order of preference.Form Factor (It looks like a phone and not a PDA)
Not tied to a provider or unlocked so you dont have to be geeky searching for unlocking/jail breaking articles.
Wifi 54G (email is good on the run)
Quad Band GSM World Phone
Media/Music playback is excellent.
Can go upto 16GB Micro SDHC (plenty of music or videos) comes with 4Gig.
Speaker phone and in general call quality for me increasd 3-5 times. (I used Razr before).
Clear brilliant screen
Touch pad responsive enough
Picture quality @3.2MP is good in daylight and flash comes in handy for pictures in lowlight (subject @2-4 ft).
What I will look for in future revisions.
USB Charging capability
A little thinner (Not that is fat right now) but it would make it sweeter.
Total Alloy body including back cover for a more solid feel.
Maybe a more rugged look/feel (non piano black or non shiny finish for e.g Zune kind of finish or finish with more friction), I always get a feeling I am going to drop it.

So I read the previous reviews (four at the time) and felt that this was a decent investment for an overseas trip that I was taking.
Boy was I disappointed. FIRST THE PHONE IS NOT NEW!!!!.
It came in a nice package, original box everything but it was already assigned to Vodafone (indeed the certificates listed on the phone state that Vodafone is the registered user until 2021!).
As such that is why even though it is unlocked, AT&T internet will not work on it and you have to change the settings even to get it to work on overseas network
While overseas, I popped in a sim card that I bought and could make calls and such...but the phone always had a "roaming" symbol (because the network was not Vodafone!)
Otherwise, lots of flashy features that cannot be used because of the ownership issue with Vodafone - there are widgets to connect to FAcebook, Youtube etc directly but cannot connect.
The camera is pretty decent (perhaps better in bright light than my iphone camera). Also the touch screen is nice and bright but is difficult to see in direct sunlight and it sometimes requires a couple of touches before it responds. The most annoying feature is the fact that the phone locks itself once you connect to a voice call so that you have to hold down the "unlock" button to use "in call" features like keypad/contacts etc.
On the plus side, it is small, touchscreen, reasonably priced for an unlocked phone with touchscreen, with pretty decent speakers to listen to mp3s or radio (headphones need to be connected for this).
All in all though, it looks much better than it performs!
