(More customer reviews)To me, the deciding factors for a phone are: Call Quality, Size, Batttery Life, Features. So this is what I will focus on:
CALL QUALITY: I'm also very impressed with the call quality and clarity. Both with and without bluetooth, I no longer have to repeat myself or say "what?". The speaker is very loud and clear and unlike the RAZR, you don't have to hold it a certain way to hear. The overall reception is great.
SIZE: The phone is a bit longer than most, but it's very narrow and thin. It a very good compromise. As a result, it's very comfortable as a handset when talking, feels good in the hand, and I am VERY happy with how it feels in my pocket.
The build feels fairly solid and I don't expect to see loose parts in the future.
BATTERY LIFE: OK, I must RAVE here. I received this phone over a week ago and charged it up immediately. I am now on day 8, yes day EIGHT, and have yet to charge the phone again. It's still showing 1 battery bar. Needless to say, I'm quite impressed. Granted, I only enabled the bluetooth radio when I use it and I've only spent about 100 minutes talking on it this past week. Neither of my previous 2 LG phones lasted longer then 3 days under any conditions though.
FEATURES: It has all the bells and whistles: camera, evdo, mp3 playback, voice recorder, video capture, etc... I've not put these to the test yet though.
I must also comment on the charger\data port. It is a standard usb mini port. This means you can buy a standard non-proprietary USB A to USB mini B cable ( < $5 ) and connect this phone to your computer's USB port to RECHARGE THE PHONE and for any needed data connectivity. It's a VERY VERY NICE FEATURE to me. No longer do I need to spend an additional $20 for a data cable and another $30 for a second charger. $5, hook the phone to my pc at work or on the road, and recharge.
Now the cons,
1) yes, it shows fingrprints. Wipe it and forget it.
2) I'll be suprised if the the charger port cover lasts two years. I don't now a better way to cover it though.
3) Screen is smaller than some. This is due to the size of the phone though.
4) DAMN VERIZON for crippling this phones bluetooth profiles and also putting their interface on it. Verizon does this on all their phones though so nothing that you can get around.

(More customer reviews)I just got this phone from Verizon on Friday (three days ago) and I am thrilled. I was upgrading from an LG6100 flip and things have sure changed in the last 2 years! I was torn between the u620 and the u740 (the phone that flips open two ways with a qwerty keyboard), but in the end I preferred the style of the slider better and found the keys much easier to use. I read every review I could find online and I found that overall people love this phone.
I don't have any plans for using the TV or music functions (I use an iPod) so I won't comment on those features at all.
Favorite Features:
*Size- Not so tiny that you can't hold it comfortably, but not big at all. Very easy to hold and type on.
*Slider- Can easily be opened with one hand. Very slick looking.
*Voice quality- Crystal clear and can be set very loud, if you like. I'm one of those people that could never hear my phonecalls, but on this phone I keep the volume set in the middle and never miss a word.
*Camera- 1.3 megapixels camera takes nice sharp photos. Has a flash too.
*Voice-to-text- Fun feature in which you can speak your text messages!
*Battery life - Very good. It's 72 hours after I first charged my phone and I'm only down one bar even though I've been playing with it a ton.
*Picture caller-id.
*Clear, sharp display.
*Solid feel. Not flimsy at all.
Overall, I am very happy with this phone. I wish it came in colors like the Verizon LG Chocolate, but instead I will settle for a cute strap (Yea! It has a strap hole!).

Motorola EM330 Phone, Titanium (AT&T) Review

(More customer reviews)After 4 months, my AT&T Motorola EM330 became stiff in the clamshell hinge. About 3 weeks later the hinge cracked upon opening and the upper part of the flip phone separated from the body at an angle on one side. I called in. During over one hour on the phone, AT&T customer service and warranty people maintained consistently that if the hinge cracked, I must have damaged it. I pointed out the phone showed no sign of external injury like dents or scratches and I never dropped it, although I do keep it in my front pants pocket and press the phone against my face while talking which stresses the hinge. Finally I convinced them that I had not abused the phone and they said they would replace it. But there was one more step in the process. The warranty service people had me remove the battery and look at the moisture indicator. It was pink indicating water exposure. I told them the phone had never been in the drink. They told me this could have occurred after being caught in the rain or answering the phone after stepping out of the shower. But regardless, the pink indicator voided the warranty and suddenly they would not replace the phone. They kindly offered to allow me to purchase a new phone at the regular price. How convenient!!! A little moisture indicator allows AT&T to avoid the responsibility of having sold a cheap, poorly made phone. The EM330 is not a clamshell phone. It's an eggshell phone. Based on other reports, BEWARE of AT&T and BEWARE the Motorola EM330.

LG Muziq LX-570 Phone (Sprint, Phone Only, No Service) Review

(More customer reviews)I got a LG 550 Fusic in June 2007 and traded it in for this one a month later, not knowing at the time that a successor was in the works. The Muziq is an excellent upgrade to its predecessor, but is similar or identical in most respects. Its footprint is a little larger, but the phone itself is slimmer and lighter, making it easier to fit in a pocket.
Unlike the Fusic, which had separate music players for memory card and downloaded content, the Muziq has one multi-capable music player which integrates the online Sprint music store. It contains most standard music player features, including shuffle and repeat. Although the music player is capable of displaying album art, this feature seems to be erratic. Sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn't, for content I've loaded from my computer using the bundled software (some of the artwork was manually added and some automatically added, all using iTunes), and the artwork didn't appear on the external screen either. Still, album art isn't a big deal if you're not staring at the phone constantly, and with a 2 GB microSD or 4 GB microSD HC card, the phone does a decent iPod Nano impression. The phone comes packaged with half a headset - it's basically the microphone/clip/button/cable assembly with a standard size headphone jack. So, once you insert your headphones of choice, the cable effectively turns the combination of the two into a headset. Naturally other cell phone headsets work as well without the adapter; I haven't tried a Bluetooth headset yet, though. The phone also includes an RF transmitter, which has decent enough quality and works well but has a short range (5-10 feet) which means results will vary widely depending on where your car's antenna is located. My Pontiac Vibe has no problems with it at all.
The Muziq's earpiece has a bit of a sweet spot, but the volume and quality are good once you find it. Use of the speakerphone, however, is not recommended. It sounds okay for music (certainly not as good as stereo headphones, but not too tinny and the volume range is passable), but people on the other end aren't able to understand me most of the time. This is disappointing, because the Fusic's speakerphone was much better. Call quality in general is good though the person on the other end can tell it's a cell phone. Dropped calls are typically not a problem.
Camera quality is to be expected. I use the 1.3 MP camera for caller ID photos and not much else. One setting, the "image enhancer", I highly recommend turning on. I don't know what it does, but it improves the quality noticeably. Although the camera has a "flash", it's not terribly effective. You can also take videos with it, though those over 500 KB can't be sent by picture mail. Still, the camera is good enough for what I use it for.
The side keys are reliable but impossible to read. I had to memorize their positions before I could use them effectively. Also, the power/USB port has a door that must be removed, making it somewhat annoying to plug in, but I certainly don't mind not getting dirt in there. The headphone port and microSD card port also have doors, but I found them easier to manipulate than the ones the Fusic had. Also, the music controls on the outside are tactile, but not in a standard way - they don't depress like normal buttons. Instead, they vibrate when you put your finger on them. You can also increase the vibration to a second, harder setting if desired. I've found that the keys are reliable but a tad disconcerting to use. There's a key guard setting, also, so you don't activate them when you don't mean to, and naturally this can be turned off.
Three major PC connectivity gripes: The phone comes with a USB cable, but it CANNOT be used to charge the phone; when the phone is in file transfer mode, it cannot receive calls; and there's no Bluetooth file transfer (though you can transfer contacts with another Bluetooth phone). Despite these glaring flaws, if you have a decent size microSD card, you can use this as a USB flash drive in a pinch; it just can't be a phone at the same time. For the mildly computer-impaired, the Muziq is packaged with Sprint proprietary iTunes-like music synchronization software which is more than happy to find all the music on your system and make adding it to your phone as easy as drag and drop.
I highly recommend switching the phone from the default theme to the LG theme. I found it to be ugly and washed out looking; that's probably why CNET's review mentioned that the screen looked washed out - once the LG theme is in place, I couldn't disagree more with that assessment, as both of the 262,000 color screens look vibrant and detailed. It dispenses with the options cluttering up the main screen if one does not or cannot use the On Demand or Text Messaging functions. Also, with this theme active, the four directional buttons can be set to shortcuts, similar to many other Sprint models.
The phone has many preset simple, MIDI and polyphonic ringers, but you can't use MP3 ringers unless you download them from the Sprint music store. There are ways of tricking the phone into accepting a user MP3 ringer for the resourceful, though the process is by no means straightforward (do a web search for adding MP3 ringers on the Fusic; it's similar for this one). It would have been nice if LG made this easier, but seeing as how it would most likely result in a sharp drop in music store sales, I'm not too surprised by it.
One big advantage, in my opinion, that this has over the Fusic is the ability to independently control the vibration ringer option. On the Fusic, you could only enable vibration by itself or with the lowest and highest ringer levels. With this model vibration is a separate option that can be enabled at any ringer level. It's a little thing, but it's little upgrades like this that make the Muziq truly superior to its predecessor.
I don't have a data plan, but the small amount of internet I've used on the phone has shown speedy downloads and good quality. I can't speak to the TV features of this phone as a result.
Battery life is excellent. I've had the phone on for nearly a week without having to recharge it, talking about an hour a day and not using internet or music. It would be nice if the included USB cable functioned as a second charging cable, though.
Overall I have found the Muziq to be an excellent phone in the short time I have used it, nearly three weeks now. Aside from the slight USB gripes mentioned above, I'm very satisfied with it and it definitely catches eyes with its sleek design. There's no way to know how it will hold up over time, but I'm hopeful it'll last out this two-year contract better than the miserable experience I had with the Sanyo 8200.

(More customer reviews)I have had my i930 for almost two months now. It does not have the newest version of Windows Mobile software since the phone has been in development for some time now. There are a whole lot of applications that you can obtain at handango.com. The wallpaper and ringtones from nextel.com will not work with this phone. Also, you can not send text messages with this phone. Receive, but not send. I purchased a 2gb smart card for my phone, and it is more than plenty. you can play mp3, wma, and even video on your phone. You can use a picture that you have taken and use that for your background. it also works with telenav, but unfortunately, weather.com's application isn't available yet. I miss using that with my old phone. You can make your own ring tones with this phone. The phone includes a disk and windows sync software along with a cradle to sync your phone with your pc. You can even access your bank account with the webbrowser on this phone as the encryption is high enough. It comes with Jawbreaker and Solitaire for the games. I like it a lot, but there are things that I miss about my old nextel phones.

i wanted to add that you can send text messages from the phone. You just have to use the MMS feature, and it has a spot where it says add photo, and you just send the text. So, you can't send an SMS message, just MMS.

When you want to take your whole world with you, look no further than the Nextel i930. This Windows Mobile-powered smartphone (Windows Mobile for Smartphones 2003 Second Edition) is designed to keep you in touch in ways that few other phones can. It's got great features, too, like an SD memory card slot, support for international service, and a VGA camera. Add all that to Nextel's legendary Direct Connect walkie-talkie services, and you've got an indispensable mobile companion.
Design The i930 is no ordinary clamshell. Like other Nextel phones, it's built tough for construction and utilities industry users. The phone sports a very large 176 x 220 TFT color display with 65,000 colors. Meanwhile, the outside cover features a supplementary color display that can show images, time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. The built-in camera and LED flash are located above this display.
A speakerphone unit is located on the rear of the phone, while the trademark Direct Connect and menu scrolling functions can be controlled from the side of the phone. The phone's control pad also features a five-way button that can control most of the phone's functions. A small button on the hinge of the phone's flip mechanism automatically opens the phone for quick access-- a real plus if you have your hands full. A standard headset jack and a USB-compatible data port are also provided.

Sony Ericsson W760a Phone, Black (AT&T) Review

(More customer reviews)UPDATE: I've had the w760a for nearly two years now (started using it in September 2008). For a while I kept seeing more and more glitches popping up with it (calls not staying remembered in the phone memory, random shut-offs, calls going to voice-mail before ever ringing). Based on other reviews I've read, these are common glitches and not limited to just me.
However, I installed a software update from the Sony Ericsson website in October 2009 and most, but not all, of the glitches have since gone away.
One major glitch remains: calls from numbers not stored in my address book (i.e. calls from anyone that I don't know, or new phone numbers), don't stay remembered in the calls log. As such, if I miss a call from a new number, that's it: I can't call them back. I don't have their number.
Similarly, when I dial new numbers, they don't stay remembered in my call log.
This is a pretty annoying glitch and makes having this phone almost akin to having a 1970s landline that doesn't have caller i.d. or a screen.
But the phone's good overall. It has excellent call quality and a number of nice perks, such as a built-in FM radio, a scheduler and tasks feature, a decent camera (3.2MP), and a sturdy design.
I wish the interface were slightly faster and perkier to respond to commands (the w760a's predecessor, the w580, was much quicker in this regard), but this phone is definitely sturdier than most on the market.
If you're looking for a reliable, sturdy phone with landline call quality and a few extra features, the Sony Ericsson w760a is a good bet. I wouldn't recommend it if you're a phone-internet user, or an obsessive texter, but if you just want to make calls and a few texts here or there, this is an excellent choice.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: I have AT&T wireless and got the Sony w760 as a replacement for my Sony w580i, which I had been using for about five months, before the speaker got messed up.
At first I thought it was great to be upgraded to the latest phone (even though the w580i was itself a pretty new phone), but I soon saw the flaws.
First, while the w760 is mostly the same interface and also of a very similar design to the w580i, there have been small changes, most of them are NOT for the better. The phone itself is slightly larger than the w580 which isn't a huge deal, unless you really like smaller phones. But the plastic and metal on it feel cheaper, thinner and tackier; I think the w580 is a much classier-looking phone than this w760. That said, I can tell now that the w760 is probably much sturdier and less plasticky-fragile.
My biggest gripe is with the added graphics. The menus and colors and themes produce less legible text and numbers (and they're less attractive) on the w760 and the fancy transitions and effects slow down commands and make the w760 a much slower phone for everyday operations, such as writing text messages, browsing through your address book, or accessing the main menu.
Some problems from the w580i have carried over to this one. I don't like how phone numbers aren't "formatted" American-style (with dashes in-between the numbers: 123-456-7890) in the address book, when you receive a call or when you type a number on the screen. Instead, you just get a 10-digit string of numbers, with no spaces or dashes, which makes it difficult to read and recognize numbers easily in the small chunks that we're used to.
The battery life is also not as long as I'd like, though it's not terrible by any means. With my old Nokia, I'd charge the phone maybe once a week at most, whereas with this Sony I have to charge it once every three days. I use the phone for on average 1000 minutes a month, or 30 minutes a day, along with listening to the radio two or three hours a week.
That said, call quality is excellent. It's about as close to a regular landline that I've ever heard and slightly improves on the quality of the w580i. Voices sound natural and the volume can be adjusted easily. Some other great features includes the "tasks" scheduler as well as a built-in FM radio.
This is an excellent phone if you're a music-lover as it carries MP3s, has a great speaker, and various features of that kind. It also has a 3.2 megapixel camera (the w580i had only 2 megapixels) which is good for taking quick photos or even video.
Some improvements include 3G capability (which I don't use) and also the AT&T GPS features which gives you directions and maps (but you pay a data fee to use it).
If the user interface were cleaner and faster this phone would be awesome. As it stands, it's adequate for my simple needs (calls and texts).

Nokia 5300 XpressMusic - Cellular phone - GSM - slider Review

(More customer reviews)I have had the phone for some days now. It is a good phone overall. However, it seems nokia could have gone the extra mile to make the phone much better. Most people should love it, however some drawbacks might make it terribly frustating to some.
Some pros and cons -
Pros -
1. Good reception/phone quality. Typical of nokia. No problems here
2. Intuitive phone user interface. Again typical Nokia UI. This one has nokia 'S40' interface. Phone is very responsive, and has no sluggishness that was found in some earlier nokia models.
3. Good build quality. Slider is robust and smooth (No loose hinges). Buttons are not as flat as those found on some sliders, thus misdialing should not usually occur. External 'music' buttons can be easily felt by the fingers when phone is inside the pocket, and are hard enough to prevent unintentional pressing.
4. Clear and bright display.
5. Nice assortment of supported bluetooth profiles. Has stereo bluetooth (a2dp).
6. Comes with 1GB card.
7. Music quality is very good (however some noise issues may be experienced - see 'cons')
8. Phone comes with adapter to use regular 3.5mm headphones.
9. External speaker is very loud, and very clear for a phone.
Cons -
1. Music interface is highly frustating. Very difficult to make a custom playlist on the phone. If you want to combine different songs into a playlist (on the phone), the only way I found is to add each of those different songs to 'favorites'. Then open the 'favorites' list and then save as playlist. Even then song order may be lost. Each song from the favorites list then has to be deleted so that a new playlist can be made.
2. Music can be synced on a PC using 'yahoo jukebox' or nokia PC suite software. Yahoo jukebox is a joke, and very confusing to use. 'Nokia PC suite' is a better option, but you may come across occasional bugs in the software. You can also simply drag music into the 'music' folder on the memory card, but you cannot create playlists through the computer that way. Mac users only have this last option to put music on the phone, and so they cannot 'sync' music but just upload it.
3. When the headphone adapter is used (for the standard 3.5 mm jack), there is a slight but definite background noise (a slight hissing) that creeps in. This is not there when the provided earphones are used (which plug in directly into 2.5mm jack). And so though the music playback quality is excellent, the adapter is far from perfect. The provided headphones are functional but stock earbuds. Audiophiles may not like their options in either case. I exchanged the adapter at the store after a few days to see if my adapter was the problem, but the noise still remained. I shall get my phone exchanged to see if only my unit has this problem. Note - inline microphone cannot be used with the 3.5mm adapter.
4. If you are using the phone with the provided headset, and you pull out the headset pin "slowly" (to switch to talking through the phone directly), the call sometimes disconnects. Somehow if you do not pull out the headset jack in a clean swift motion, the pin grazes the inner leads causing the call to disconnect. I realized this problem after my calls disconnected whenever i when tried to pull out the jack using just one hand. I went back to the store and pulled out the headset pin 'slowly' on every phone on display. Sure enough, almost every call disconnected. Even the t-mobile floor rep was surprised to see this, and lodged a trouble case with t-mobile.
If you are careful and take out the pin swiftly, then it never happens.
5. Battery life is very disappointing. The phone has the same battery as in older Nokia phones. However with the large display, bluetooth and music playback, the talktime suffers greatly. Some users might find themselves not using bluetooth for longer periods just to save some battery charge. You cannot afford to forget charging this phone at night.
6. Voice dialing is a joke on this phone. You cannot save your own voice tag. A text to speech algorithm tries to match your voice with the address book entries and fails miserably. It is guaranteed to misdial almost every time.
Other thoughts - Camera is 1.3 MP, and nothing good or bad about it. You can find better and worse cameras on phones.
Mac users can buy isync plugin from [...] for a full featured phonebook and calender sync over bluetooth.
EDIT - My friend bought a 5300 and her phone too has the problem of background hiss through the 3.5mm headphone adapter. So, its there in all phones.

(More customer reviews)Contrary to what the documentation says, you don't need to install Rhapsody to sync music to the phone. Before you plug the phone in for the first time, just go into the Settings menu, pick the USB Auto Sync option, and set the phone to the "sync data" setting. That will install the proper drivers. After that, set the phone to "sync music" and you'll be able to use Windows Media Player to sync music anytime thereafter. Or, you can copy music files manually to the my_music folder by activating the "USB Mass Storage" option located in the Settings/Tools menu.
Little quirks like that are the story with this phone.
Pros:

* Feels and works very much like an Ipod when closed
* Built-in FM transmitter to beam music to car stereo!
* Music playback is loud and clear on phone speaker

* Menus and buttons are very intuitive
* Clicky, responsive keys (feels like a phone!)
* Solid construction, but thin enough to fit in pocket

* Ringtone volume is TOO LOUD, with no real way to lower it
* Have to remove SD card to sync to internal memory
* Pictures look a little tinted when sent to PC
* Can't organize pictures into folders, so gallery gets unwieldy fast
* Can't change behavior of the lock button
* Signal strength meter is totally inaccurate
* Mirrored front quickly gathers fingerprints and smudges
For me, those quirks weren't enough to get me to dock a star from the Chocolate 3's rating. I bought the silicon cover to avoid the fingerprint problem. I got around the loud ringtones by downloading and sending a couple "quieter" ones to the phone. The lack of good picture organization and camera quality didn't bug me because I don't use my phone as a camera. The pictures look pretty decent anyway. The signal strength indicator doesn't jive with our two older phones, but in real-world use the Chocolate 3 can make a call in our favorite big grocery store whereas our older phones can't.
Out of all of those tiny peeves, the one thing I wish they'd fix is make it possible to change the behavior of the button that locks the scroll wheel. Right now, a single-click lets you use the scroll wheel. I'd prefer a double-click. I haven't actually managed to unlock the phone in my pocket yet, though, so it's all good.
What I wanted was 1) a comfortable, reliable phone, and 2) a decent music player. The LG VX-8560 Chocolate 3 has delivered superbly on both counts.

My phone constantly calls people in my contact list daily (without my knowledge). The keypad freezes for hours at a time and I cannot use the phone at all! The screen goes crazy and just automatically scrolls out of control. I have had this phone for 8 months and had to replace it twice already! It really wears on your patience. You can adjust the touch sensitivity, but it doesn't help. I have had it! Most of the time I can't even use the damn thing! UGH!!!

(More customer reviews)I got this phone with Verizon service. If you look at the features, it seems like a pretty impressive piece, but if you want to use it for other than just a phone, you have to deal with many shortcomings.
The Phone: Sound is clear, speakerphone is nice and loud so if you have to be looking at the keypad, you can still hear what's going on. I suppose that's also an advantage if you're one of those obnoxious people who like to walk around in public sharing their converstaions with the world. You can attach ringtones and pics to your contacts to individualize them. A headset can be used with a small included adapter or via Bluetooth. The phone can also use voice commands, but I haven't figured that out yet.
The Camera: It won't replace your digital camera, but takes nice pictures. If you don't like shutter lag, you won't like this camera. It's about 2 seconds for the camera to focus after you push the button. You can turn autofocus off, but I have figured out how to focus manually yet. Count on getting a micro SD card if you want to be able to get the pics off your camera. The is no way to transfer pics with a USB cable for this phone yet. It does support Pictbridge and bluetooth printing, but I don't know anyone who prints pictures exactly how they were taken. I need to get them to my computer. You can attach pics to messages, but they are automatically downsized before sending.
The Music: For $30 you buy the Music Essentials Kit, which gets you a USB cable and a stereo headset (and required drivers). I was unable to get it to work on my PC, so ended up using my laptop to transfer music. To do so requires Microsoft Media Player 10 (it will not work with version 11). Once it's working syncing your music to the phone is somewhat straightforward. Media palyer converts your songs to WMA format and transfers them through the cable. I haven't tried to put music directly on a microSD card and plugging it in, but I am told that the phone adheres to digital rights and licensing, but I haven't run into any music that I can't transfer yet (including downloaded songs off of
Usenet). Once you load your music though, it sounds great. Another caveat: If you got this phone, you probably like cool toys, and might be thinking of getting a stereo bluetooth headset to complete the picture. This phone does NOT support the stereo bluetooth profile (in addition to other profiles that might allow your phone and PC to communicate). I believe the only phone that supports stereo bluetooth at this time is the new LG Chocolate.
Conclusion: This could be a really nice phone if Verizon hadn't crippled it in an attempt to make you use their services for multimedia purposes. They want you to pay $1.99 per song from them, and to use their services to share pictures. This would be a great phone if you could easily sync the phone and PC through a cable (or bluetooth), to include music, pictures, contacts, calendar, notes, etc. The user interface could use some improvement too, but that has nothing to do with the phone.

The Samsung SCH-a990 represents the pinnacle of cell phone technology today.
