(More customer reviews)I've owned my Fuze for about a month. It's my second WinMo smartphone (I previously owned a Samsung Blackjack II), and I do WinMo software development in my spare time.
Out of the box, the phone has many features that put iPhones and Blackberries to shame.
Pros:
+ VGA touchscreen (twice the resolution of iPhone's display, and 4 times the resolution of QVGA)
+ QWERTY keyboard has lots of keys that are small, yet easily accessible with my large hands.
+ Accelerometers- might seem gimmicky at first (Teeter is a fun game), the ability to mute a phone call by turning it face-down is surprisingly useful
+ Opera as default web browser. It blows Pocket IE away in terms of speed and usability.
+ Community support- even though HTC doesn't seem to care about customer's support ("We don't care if 3rd party software can't run on your device..."), the folks at xda-developers.com are great about tweaking HTC phones to near-perfection.
+ Wireless connection options are great. Supports AT&T's 3G/HSDPA network. Connection to a Wifi network is surprisingly fast for this little device (I wish my laptop could do this).
+ Supports HSUPA (needs to be unlocked), which increases upload speeds ten-fold (for me at least), which allows much snappier web-browsing
+ MicroSDHC expansion slot, allowing up to 32 GB of extra memory
+ TouchFlo3D front end
+ WinMo has more available apps than most (all?) other smartphone platforms, and is very easy to develop new apps for WM
+ Extra little surprises like the light sensor, very bright LED flash, snazzy notification LED (looks very cool), TV-out functionality (requires $20 cable), and a capacitive touchpad below the screen.
Cons:
- Small screen
- Crappy settings out of the box... Touchflow is jerky on default AT&T rom, GPS lag, hardware Direct3D support (easily fixable with a custom rom from xda-developers)
- AT&T bloatware, trial software wasting precious rom space (again, easily fixable with new rom)
- Glossy black finish = fingerprint magnet and very slippery device. The HTC Touch Pro overseas had a rubber matte back that was much nicer and felt more solid in your hands. No idea why they changed this for the US version.
- Lack of proper hardware drivers for video and 3D acceleration.*
*This is unacceptable. Even after HTC made assurances after the Kaiser driver debacle that future "devices" would be better supported. This thing has awesome hardware that is being advertised as one of the fastest mobile chipsets out on the market (Qualcomm MSM7201a, which has impressive specs on paper), but it runs video and games slower than my Dell Axim PocketPC produced back in 2003.
Overall, this is a great phone that with an impressive number of features. If you can excuse the mediocre video playback and lack of OpenGL ES support, this is an ideal phone. But if you're looking for a robust multimedia device that can handle 640x480 videos as well as 3D games, I'd suggest avoiding HTC phones until they fix their drivers.

AT&T Service This AT&T phone can handle high-speed data connectivity via AT&T's 3G mobile broadband data network, which is available in most major metropolitan areas. The AT&T 3G network uses the dual-band UMTS 850/1900 MHz network, and this phone is also compatible with 2100 MHz 3G networks (found in international territories). The AT&T 3G network provides download speeds ranging from 700 Kbps to 1.7 Mbps, and upload speeds ranging from 500 Kbps to 1.2 Mbps. This makes it possible to enjoy a variety of feature-rich wireless multimedia services, and it gives you the advantage of offering simultaneous voice and data services. (For use outside the United States, an AT&T international data plan is recommended.)

In areas where the 3G network is not available, you'll continue to receive service on the AT&T EDGE network, which offers availability in more than 13,000 US cities and along some 40,000 miles of major highways. Providing average data speeds between 75-135Kbps, it's fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services, including video and music clips, full picture and video messaging, high-speed color Internet access, and email on the go. You'll also enjoy quad-band GSM connectivity, which allows you to make calls in more than 190 countries and access data applications in the more than 135 countries where AT&T offers international data roaming.

With 3G connectivity, you'll be able to access AT&T's Video Share service, which enables you to send a live, one-way video stream to another compatible phone during a standard voice call. The service also allows you to switch the direction of the video stream during the same phone call. (Customers must be in an area served by the company's 3G network and have a Video Share-enabled phone.) A majority of users in the architecture, engineering and construction industries rated the ability to share live video through Video Share highly, according to research commissioned by AT&T. Video Share lets you see progress on a job site or review the day's work without having to drive from an office or other site to do so.

You can take advantage of the AT&T Navigator GPS software and service, a full-featured premium navigation application that includes audible turn-by-turn directions, real-time traffic updates and re-routing options, and 3D moving maps (additional charges applicable). AT&T Navigator offers several other features to make your commute more enjoyable and reliable, including mobile access to Yellowpages.com. Additionally, AT&T Navigator is the only mobile phone-based GPS service that provides integrated speech recognition for address entry and points of interest search.

With 3G connectivity, you'll be able to access AT&T's Cellular Video (CV) service and the Internet while on the go. Cellular Video features content from CNN, The Weather Channel, iFilm, Comedy Central and exclusive premium content from HBO and much more. And you get access to AT&T Mobile Music, which enables you to buy tracks while on the, access the Napster and eMusic subscription music services, stream music video, discover what's playing with Music ID song-recognition software, and find out what's hot with The Buzz music news portal. (A MEdia Max subscription bundle is recommended for accessing AT&T's Internet, video, and music services.)

Instantly contact any other AT&T user with this phone's Push-to-Talk (PTT) functionality, which works across the entire network to make sure you have a clear signal so you can get things done. Easy-to-read icons let you know when members of your contact list are available, not available, or have their status set to "Do Not Disturb." You can also set your own status to let others know that you're busy. When a quick PTT call needs to be a longer discussion convert the call easily to a regular voice call--works for one-to-one calls as well as group calls. Save time on group calling by pulling up your contacts and simply "marking" those you wish to include on a call--no need to set up and save groups before calling, unless you want to.

The phone has a built-in web browser for MEdia Net downloads and mobile web browsing. AT&T's MEdia Net service enables you to receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more.

Phone Features With the TouchFLO 3D interface, HTC has taken a great leap forward in touchscreen innovation. It's designed for one-hand operation using simple, gesture-based navigation, allowing you to simply touch, hold and slide along the screen tabs. A quick slide on the home screen quickly activates the most used features such as e-mail, text messaging, music player and camera. This instinctive interface extends to the powerful Web browser, where a useful "zoom in, zoom out" feature makes it especially easy to access the Web via the included Opera browser, which provides for desktop-like Web page renderings and user interactions. At this time the only HTC Diamonds in the US are imported European phones and so they support the European frequencies. This phone only supports the 900/1800/1900 GSM frequencies, ATT sometimes uses the 800-850 frequency for GSM in the US so if you use ATT you might find yourself without service. Europe and Asia both use different 3G frequencies than are going to be used in the US. If that is not a big deal for you and your current GSM service provider does not use 800-850 and you are not interested in 3G service then this is a cool phone. However, I would wait until HTC releases this phone in the US where it will have the correct frequencies supported and you will be able to use 3G. If you haven't already done so, you should also check out the HTC Diamond Pro which is the same phone with an added slide out keyboard.

Samsung Eternity a867 Phone, Black (AT&T) Review

(More customer reviews)Was looking to replace my current phone. Already have a work phone (BB) for email/texting. Was looking for a personal phone with good reception so I could close down my land line. Also wanted a phone with good form factor and ability to access the net w/good resolution viewing the pages. Initially tried an unlocked Nokia n78....great reception (Nokia has the best), loved in particuolar that it has an FM transmitter. The browser was fast and the screen nice but did not like that you have to go into the menu to rotate the screen and zoom. Aso, the keyborad buttons are very tricky. So....next went and bought an iPhone, which I thought an amazing gadget. Loaded with features. I was stunned however to find that the phone reception was erratic and often poor (many dropped and missed calls). Found out that this is a common problem with the 2nd gen iPhone (do a web search on "iPhone reception problems..). Also thought the iPhone a tad too large (especially as I aso frequently need to carry a work BB) and the camera mediocre.
Bought the Eternity two days ago. Fantastic form factor and great price for the features. Love how it has behaved so far as I put it through the various tests. Like the touch interface, menu interface and the auto rotation screen. Keyboard is nice, best once rotating the screen the long way. Call quality is as good as the iPhone but not as good as the Nokia. Reception is MUCH better than the iPhone (which at times was borderline defective) but not as good as Nokia. Unlike the iPhone, you can add external memory (micro SD). Apple charges 199 for an 8G and 299 for a 16G iPhone....$100 for 8G iPhone memory upgrade vs. $20 for an 8G card. Expect iPhone upgrades in the future of 24G, 32G etc for $100 or more a pop LOL. You do the math.
For web access through ATT, I pay $15/m for the Eternity and would have paid $30/m if I kept the iPhone (it is more data intensive). Overall, I love this phone so far....better price, better monthly payment, great form factor, fast browser, nice mp3 interface with quick access to preset equilizer settings. The only other phones on my radar screen are the BB flip, HTC Touch Diamond and the Nokia n85.....but this one seems a keeper, especially given the price. If I get bored or something new comes out that is a must have, I'll just buy it (will need to be an unlocked phone unless it's upgrade time) as I'm only down $100 with this phone ($50 if through Amazon). Returned the phone. Found that I was only getting 1-2 bars at home and occasionally missing calls. In contrast, my old phone (Sony Ericcson 810i) and my wife's Blackberry 8300 were getting 4-5 bars (all phones on the ATT network). Took a trip to VT...had no reception in one town while my wife had 2-3 bars on her Blackberry. Both the Blackberry and Samsung Eternity are 3G. Overall, an amazing gadget but lacking with respect to the feature I wanted most....A PHONE I COULD DEPEND ON FOR MAKING/RECEIVING CALLS.

(More customer reviews)I have this phone for about a week now. Overall, it's not bad. You can dial/type either with the touch screen key pads or use the full keyboard. Texting is so easy now. This is one of the few phone with full keyboard where you don't have to purchase the data plan! It can connect to your computer via bluetooth, but i haven't try that yet.
Now, the not so great things: 1) I haven't been able to find away to turn of the 3G. Doing so will extend battery talk time. So for now, I have to charge it every other day based on average use. 2) It is a bit heavier than what I would like. 3) Being a new phone, not much assessories are available yet. I'm still waiting a car charger and a stereo headset (not bluetooth). 4) Camera is a bit weak, but i don't really use it so that's ok.

(More customer reviews)The HTC touch is almost everything I would want in a pda phone. The goods- The size, this is tiny and flat. Not alot bigger than a credit card (3.9 inches by 2.8 inches by 1/2 inch thick and weighs just 3.98 ounces). You can put it anywhere and it disappears. It's also very light for a pda phone- for a phone in general. The case is a matte black almost rubberized plastic, it doesn't fingerprint and grips in your hand easily. FYI the green model I was told is a smooth pearl plastic- I haven't seen it in person. It runs Window Mobile 6.0- which is great if you are using the Office applications. The processor is fast enough and does graphics fine. It also tells you when you have too many applications (usually graphic) open- easy to click off from the process manager on the top bar. The battery life isn't drained by the bluetooth like on most other phones. Nor does the wi-fi drain it as much as I expected. The battery should be bigger but since the touch is efficient you break even. I still have to plug it in every night but it's also new, so once I'm not constantly playing with it, maybe it will last longer anyway. I'm personally holding out for an extra capacity battery to appear in the next 6 months. The "touch" part is great- especially switching applications and moving around the screen. The interface is elegant and simple- not gimmicky. All the applications are literally at your fingertips. It has a 2.0 megapixal camera with video and sound (normal and MMS)- no flash but all but my very dark indoor shots come out well, especially with all the light and shooting modes.
I did consider the iphone but the lack of a video camera, blue tooth, and stylus killed it for me. With the 1GB removable mini scan disc- (it can handle storage higher as well) it can do just as well as a mp3 player- at least for me- and I can listen on my stereo BLUETOOTH head phones.
Next the bads- no 3G. Annoying for a new model but Edge is fast enough for regular surfing. Wi-fi is also getting so common it's not really an issue. Besides it has PUSH email so it's not like you are hanging out waiting for it.
I would also like to address the complaints I see about this phone- namely the lack of separate keyboard/small onscreen keyboard. This phone is really tiny- it would be impossible to keep the big screen AND have a keyboard, adding a pull out key board would bulk it up too much. I don't think the online keyboard is meant to be used as a 'regular' keyboard either. I can type (with my nails)- but why? That's what the transcriber is for. Using the stylus I write on the screen and it types it out. Not letters (there is that option) but whole sentences. It's pretty accurate and about perfect, especially if you practice a bit and input your personal style. I do use the keyboard for passwords, number strings, etc. Anyone buying this should keep that in mind- it's not for someone who is insistant on a keyboard. The other is the speaker. It's okay for music and video but do wish it were louder, you certainly can't sit across a desk and have a phone conversation, maybe it's because the speaker is on the back. Pda speakers in general don't have a good track record and my hp messenger was especially terrible. This is at least 2x as loud and is fine for car navigation. The call quality is clear and is loud when used as a regular phone. I also use my blue tooth head set all the time. (no I'm not walking around like the secret service- it's just what I reach for when the phone rings.) The range is good, and I think most pda people will probably be moving that way anyhow. (I have the little Motorola H700 which you open to answer and uses the same charger.)
I would highly recommend this phone to anyone who uses a pda with the exception of those who just can't give up their keyboard. But with tablet PCs coming up- I think it's only a matter of time until you'll need to consider a transcriber anyway. (Just for the record- I would much rather type on my computer than write free hand, but the transcriber is a good alternative when you want small and fast.)

It has everything you want in a smart phone; Web browser, GPS, still/video camrea, wifi, bluetooth and a decent number of apps (not to mention its good looks). It also comes with a 8GB micro SD card which you can upgrade if you need to. Touch flow 3d makes up for the outdated UI of WM 6.1. Whenever I forget it at home, I really miss it.
I use it with a "go" plan cause I'm not willing to pay a carrier tax every month. It's no big deal because I don't make that many calls and I use data apps only where I have access to Wifi. It may not be a good fit for someone who has a monthly plan. You might as well just take advantage of the carrier discounts you get on a new handset especially since the phone doesn't support 3G in the states. I think HTC missed a big oppurtunity by not releasing a US 3G model.

HTC Touch Phone (Sprint) Review

And my recent purchase of the touch is something I definably will not be regretting three to six months later when something newer comes out. After doing some research on specs and capabilities on this phone, the I-Phone, Tilt, and some other smart phones that were cheaper but offered similar capabilities, I must say this is the one I would recommend everyone. I've been a long subscriber of Sprint, and was never impressed on how their phones ranked with other service providers, specially since sprint tends to be slightly more expensive than others.
However, after one week of owning this phone I must say that this phone is hands down better than the iphone. I can do much more with this device, and I am able to purchase anything else I might need for whatever I may want to do or need to do. The software is somewhat complex for those who may lack the technical knowledge (no offense), but if you sit down and read the instructions throughly you will find out that it is not that bad, and once you get the hang of it you can actually function around the phone without any restraints.
The camera is adequate, and I say this because I have a digital camera and I did not purchase a phone simply to take picture. But overall, it performs well, and the fact that I can take panoramic pictures and stitch them together is really something I did not expect from this phone. The sports setting which takes 5 shots in a row is extremely useful if you're dealing with kids. The browser is nothing fancy to brag, but I acquired a software to search and view videos on the web (mostly youtube), and I am able to save, bookmark, etc. Most popular websites are now joining the mobile web requirements, enough said on that.
The phone is bluetooth, and the media player actually plays the music much louder than my previous phone through my bluetooth Motorola HT820 stereo headset. The sync function is extremely easy to set up. The touch screen feature is really nice, specially since you can write on the screen with the stylus and the software will type the words for you; this alone speeds up your typing speed if in IM or perhaps typing a memo on the mobile Microsoft word software.
Email accounts are easily set up (yahoo, hotmail, gmail, work email, school, etc) I have them all, and they are sync periodically as I set them.. again this is soo easy once you get the hang of it. Google maps is quite nice, if you're upgrading from a regular phone to a smart phone. The built in memory on the device is adequate, but you can expand it with a micro SD card (up to 4GB), and I recommend you do this and set up the phone to use only that memory (install all the software that did not come with the phone on the memory card instead of the device).Feb 2009 update:
After using this phone for over a year, I was starting to find it out of style and lacking some functionality in comparison to the newer phones that are going on sale. And just as I was getting to upgrade again, I found a way to flash the operating system and upgrade everything on the phone to the point that I was amazed by the capabilities of the device. GPS locked so much faster, I installed a different browser to compete with the safari of the IPHONE, and added so many other applications that are extremely useful, not to mention that I also changed the interface so that it looks just like the newer model from HTC (Diamond). Believe me when I say this, this phone can have soo much potential for those of us who like to tweak electronics and find out what else can we do with it. The fact that is a windows mobile device allows you to do all this stuff, so keep that in mind. But I still want to point out that this device is by far not meant for somebody that is not savvy with electronics.

(More customer reviews)I bought this one to substitute my netbook, and it is nice a lot! Goodbye windows. There are places where my old modem couldn't get HDSPA and the dZ can do it. Using 3G and/or GPS will consume your battery very, very fast, so i use two usb cable charges pluged on computers, one at home and the other at the office. For better use of my resources i'm carrying two phones, the old one used for calls, and the new one for web, mails, news and other apps. Usb miniplug is the same from my Nokia.
Typing on screen is not too hard, it' nice, so i'm using the phisical keyboard only when i'm in a taxi or on a train, so it's not absolutely necessary for me, and would consider a cheaper phone without the keyboard and extra thickness. The resolution 800x480 is nice and the screen size is very good, i don't need extra size screen, or would consider directly one galaxy tab if size matters. I also bought an ipod touch 4th generation. At home me and my wife and daughter are using it a lot, and we can compare some differences between the android and the lighter apple. We can download apps from both markets for example. On the Htc i can watch any kind of videos, surf on flash based sites, and don't need to sinc anything with itunes. Htc share easily the 3G connection to the ipod when we need. On the ipod touch i see a slightly better reading experience with the little higher screen resolution (960x640). Photos and videos are great on both, i'm a photographer and this is important for me.
Last advise, those phones will be nothing in a few years, both because the new tecnologies, and the hardware damage using it everywhere everyday. So if you are on a budget i would recomend a cheaper mid-line phone instead of the top ones.

(More customer reviews)Here is this product's obligatory page-long review. I drew some basic comparisons to two other Verizon phones -- the Samsung Omnia i910 and the LG Dare. I hope this review may ultimately save some of you some time. :)
I have been looking for a phone with a high-resolution, fast camera, and PDA-like features. I use the camera when traveling to clients' premises, and am surprised how many devices made by Apple, RIMM, Palm and others treat cell-phone cameras as an adolescent feature that wastes the time of employees (like surfing emails and internet cannot be abused this way). As someone who needs the coverage of the Verizon network in my area, not too many phones fit into the above two categories -- particularly without the need to buy a $30/month data plan. I intentionally delayed using my NE2, knowing that Verizon often releases phones in June. After nearly choosing the Samsung Omnia i910 and LG Dare, I'm glad I did.
I read in other Amazon reviews that some user's of the Sammy 910 made the effort to set the phone up properly so that they didn't have to dig through menus. But personally, I found the i910 very difficult to do almost anything, even with shortcuts right on its desktop, even after trying it out 6 times at Verizon stores. I'd hate to tell a relative, "Here's my phone, go make a call!" It's excellent 5mpix camera almost convinced me, but it was too hard to text in either landscape or portrait, and it requires the $30/mon data plan, plus has a non-standard headphone jack. The LG Dare was much simpler to pick-up an use, although (without having tried calibration adjustments) I found I made mistakes every time I did a sample text message with it's touch screen, in either orientation. The camera was also slow at times, especially when using auto-focus, taking as much as 2 seconds to take a picture, and more to wait for the camera to prompt you with the save/erase options.
Enter the enV Touch (and in some similar respects, the LG enV3 VX9200 Phone, Blue (Verizon Wireless) or the LG enV3 VX9200 Phone, Maroon (Verizon Wireless). Finally, a company has figured out a way to keep a real, non-touch-screen qwerty board embedded in an updated, semi-smart phone, especially for those of us who cannot or do not like haptic-feedback touch screens. Personally, I prefer the center-located space bar, although some of the older enV user's may need time to get used to this. The keyboard, with my fairly large, iron-grip hands, is easier to use than any touch screen keyboard I've tried, and the 3.2 megapixel camera is one of only a few Verizon phones that offers better than 3 megapix resolution -- shameful in my opinion. Pictures snap quickly too, in less than 1 second. The full 3" screen viewfinder makes you feel as if you are using a devoted still camera, although I'm noticing that I have to be a bit careful how I hold the phone so as not to cover the sensor. This will improve with practice.
But about that front touchscreen -- I am very impressed. Even without a hard keyboard, this would have been the first phone from any US provider where I can actually type out a text message, completely error-free, using only the traditional numeric keypad in portrait mode. And getting there is easier too -- the tab-up feature to use the touch screen is very easy and intuitive. Screen resolution is very good, though perhaps not quite as leading edge as the iPhone or Storm color and resolution. However, the screen is large enough to see the touch keyboard and a large enough portion of a text or email message without having to scroll through as much as with the Dare/Omnia. But the phone is also fast -- my old Motorola motorazr had ongoing slow-responsiveness to pictures, notepad activation, even ringing for incoming calls! The enV Touch is fastest phone I've used, with a near-instant 1/4th second or better response to opening or activating almost anything. This iPhone-like device also does not require a data plan if you just need a feature-rich cell phone without always-on email. However, at $1.99/MB, I will have to try out email push and browsing to see if a data plan may yet be desirable. I travel to Canada frequently, and hope not to have any "always-on" data roaming fees -- I have read horror stories about iPhones incurring $600 bills as owners blithely cross borders or even roaming within the US. But to my current, possibly wrong understanding, I don't think this phone automatically data-roams. The phone also offers airplane mode and a standard 3.5mm headphone jack -- finally, no more need to take an iPod and cell phone and camera with me on trips. Now only if we had unlocked GPS...maybe this will work with Google Maps? Another interesting device I'm looking at purchasing is the Motorola MOTOROKR T505 Bluetooth In-Car Speakerphone which blue-tooths the phone's audio or phone calls to the car stereo -- safer for calls and convenient for music. Another nice change: The CLEAR and END keys on the front screen are well separated now -- no accidentally erasing an unsent message when you thought you were backspacing.
It's not perfect. Despite the terrific 16GB capacity, Verizon's menu system still retains a 200 text-message limit. Wha?? After nearly 10 years with this design, couldn't this be a tiny bit larger by now? Of course, that's a Verizon issue, not really LG's mistake, but since this phone is currently only used on Verizon's network, it's an issue. The phone is a little bit wider at .61 inches than comparable, non-keyboarded competitors. I gladly accept this trade-off for the convenience of two styles of keyboards though. It's also little taller than the similar enV3. So far, that's all I can say on the con side.
As much as I love the touch screen, it's still not what I'd consider a true iPhone contender though, which with a new release today, seems like it still has a more vibrant display and of course much better apps. But the enV Touch was, for me, the closest Verizon phone to the iPhone, if only because it seems so intuitive, and it is easily the best cell phone I've ever owned.
As I use the phone, I will update the review with notable pros and cons.

It also has a current price that's much more than the iPhone and many other phones or pocket PCs.Unfortunately, with this phone, the software provided doesn't come close to taking full advantage of the hardware.
The video and other processing performance is sub-par and worse than earlier models of HTC phones. Though they supplied the hardware, HTC didn't include the driver software necessary to take advantage of this phones high-end processor potential. Primary processing speed is slower than many other phones (even when compared to phones with slower and cheaper CPU's) because of the driver issues and the fact that the new iPhone type user interface (called TouchFlo), is first-generation-clunky.If you aren't particularly interested in watching a lot of video on your phone, the video driver problem is of no consequence. However, the slower TouchFlo interface may be an irritant (four taps on the icon to open a program instead of one). For such an expensive product with a relatively fast processor, it should outperform every other phone on the market . . . but it doesn't come close.
Initially, HTC wouldn't commit to providing updated software to solve the performance problems. Very recently an HTC executive noted that HTC had changed its mind and will eventually provide "video acceleration software," as an alternative to providing better video drivers, and software as an update for the Touch Cruise. Unfortunately, when I called, HTC would not provide an estimated release date for the updates.
I'm not a big Apple fan, but with the iPhone 3G due out in July of 2008,I think most that are interested in this phone should wait a little longer to spend so much money.

(More customer reviews)Having used several smart phones, and used this phone for about 4 months, I believe I can give a fairly educated review. And hopefully save you some money in the process. I was going to do a pros and cons list, but I can't think of many pros other than the fact that it charges off a USB charger.
The supplied software is useless (like most of these things). You can drag and drop from your computer to the phone, but you need to find the drop folders yourself. This takes time (and effort), as the folder set up is overly complex.
Once you have some music on your phone, you'll discover it doesn't have a 3.5mm headphone jack, so you'll need an HTC headset, which is an extra (was included on the previous model) and too bulky to carry around. You also can't plug it into speakers or your car stereo for the same reason, thus you can't play your music. Other HTC models have headphone jacks, why not this one?
I haven't found a video format the phone will play. If it made the video, it'll play it. Otherwise it won't.
It runs windows mobile. So it does all the things devices running windows do - it freezes, it crashes, and it requires re-booting - FAR too often.
The HTC TouchFLO will cause you most of the frustration found with this phone. It is unable to distinguish between long or short touches, strokes and taps.... Or in fact anything that you'd expect from a touch device. If, for example you scroll through your contacts, the phone will continue to scroll until you stab the screen several times to stop it. By then it's gone past the contact you wanted, and you have to do it again, and again, and again. Eventually you'll give up and use the navigation key - which defeats the point of having a touch screen phone.
The screen is too small for the size of the phone. Navigating the internet is very difficult, so you'll need to enlarge the screen to read anything. Then you're at the mercy of TouchFLO again, as you attempt to move the page to the section you want to read. TouchFLO will activate links you didn't want (as it can't distinguish between taps, and scrolls), and it will zoom and un-zoom constantly (as it can't distinguish taps, double taps, and scrolls). Simply looking at a page is hard enough, doing anything like booking flights or a rental car is impossible.
The default web browser (Opera) doesn't open all web pages correctly, and links often remain inactive (see booking flights above). It also has Explorer, but with the small screen, it's too hard to use, and TouchFLO works differently in explorer. Opera is the lesser of the two evils.
There are no settings to change the screen from landscape to portrait. Landscape would make everything easier (slightly). Once mine opened a web page in landscape (which was great), the next time it was back to portrait. There is no setting to change it manually. I think my experience was just a Microsoft glitch.
It has limited internal memory, with an expansion slot for another micro SD card. However, the default setting is to save to the phone, which fills the memory so quickly it's no longer able to launch some programmes. Once data is saved to the phone there is no way to move it to the SD card, the only option is to delete (or connect to a computer and start the slow painful process of doing it your self). To avoid this you have to manually tell it to save to the card.
If you store data on the card, you have to manually search the card to find it. Essentially you have two storage devices, a phone, and a card. This is a very annoying problem.
Due to the phone's limited internal memory, it can only run one programme at a time and due to the slow processor speed, some programmes takes an eternity to load (Opera, for example can take up to 10 seconds and sometimes more)
The camera is about typical quality for a phone like this. The best thing I can say, is it takes photos. Not good photos, just photos. The metering and white balance are very poor, but so are most phone cameras.
To answer a call, the phone uses a `button' on the screen that you tap (rather than slide like an iphone), meaning you'll answer calls while fishing it out of your pocket. Even when it's your mother inlaw. Or accidently answer calls, even when you haven't heard the phone ring.
When it detects wireless networks, it beeps, and brings up a box asking if you want to join it. If you're in an area with lots of networks, or in a moving vehicle, the shear number of these boxes makes doing anything on the phone impossible, as you have to constantly dismiss them.
Texting is difficult due to the screen size. With the keyboard open you loose most of the screen, and still need to use the stylus to type as the `keys' are still tiny.
There is no Alarm tone. The alarms will only make one solitary beep. Adding an alarm sound, or song to the folder containing the `beep' was fruitless. Mine is totally unreliable and the alarm seems to go off around 80% of the time - you simply can't rely on it.
The recessed screen is an improvement over the previous model, as it makes it more difficult to scratch, however it doesn't come with a pouch (which the previous model did) so it'll get scratched anyway. It does however, come with a screen protector.
As a business tool, this phone misses the mark:
You can't read spread sheets on the screen, so you have to enlarge it. Then if you try to scroll, our friend TouchFLO is unable to distinguish between touching and scrolling, thus it will only highlight cells, it WONT scroll. The only way to do it is to use the stylus to move the tabs at the sides of the page (as any human finger is about 20 times too big to touch the little tabs). You can never see enough of the sheet at once to actually do anything
Word documents are usable, but due to the size of the screen, once you open the keyboard you can't read much. And again due to the limitations of TouchFLO you can move the curser, but you can't scroll through the document with out using the stylus on the tabs.
Email works well, but attachments are downloaded to the phone memory, so it quickly fills up, which then affects other programmes. Deleting emails is the only solution, and as this phone does a full sync with your email server, they're deleted off the server too.
Summary: it's a cheap, very poor imitation of an iphone. So poor that it fails at even the most simple tasks. If you've never used a smart phone before, you may be wowed by the internet and email on the phone and may not notice all of these failings. If you have used one before, this phone will drive you insane. The user interface is VERY poor. HTC has a long way to go to make this phone usable.
