Motorola DROID A855 Android Phone (Verizon Wireless) Review

This multimedia device is truly one for the books. I believe it really rivals, if not tops off the Apple i Phone 3.0G s. It has amazing features and the size and screen quality are impeccable. The built in memory (16GB) accompanied by the expandable micro SD slot is also a great feature. This phone solves the need for having a digital camera, video camera, MP3 player, cellular device, portable messenger, portable web browser and video viewing device. All those components of the device are top of the line and not lackluster as compared to many other smart phones.

Verizon Motorola Droid A855 Android Cell Phone (no contract) Review

I've had this phone for a while now and it is FANTASTIC!
I upgraded to it from a blackberry storm thinking it wouldn't be that different from one smart phone to another, but boy was I wrong!
I love my Droid; there are SO many more wonderful apps available for it and it I love that it syncs everything with my gmail.
I am NOT very good with phones (tend to beat up on them a lot) but I have NEVER had any problems with this one breaking or anything.

If you are looking for a non-apple smartphone, this is it.
Primary function, being a phone, is outstanding. The phone has a good reception and you are able to have clear conversations even in noisy environments like games or construction sites.
Additionally, it is full of features with out of the box google integration. The screen is amazing and very responsive. Gps, camera and wi-fi works as expected. The full qwerty slider keyboard works great, however keys are too flat. Form factor is adequate. The phone is slim and not so heavy.
Despite of the bugs mentioned in several forums, I haven't found any. The piece I got came already with the Android 2.1 update and works straightforward.
It deserve a "well done" for the engineers at Motorola.

HTC Imagio XV6975 Windows Phone (Verizon Wireless) Review

HTC Imagio XV6975 Windows Phone (Verizon Wireless)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received this phone just days after Verizon released it, replacing a TouchPro as my personal phone. I also have a Blackberry Tour and was testing an iphone 3GS for our company at the same time. So I had three of the latest technologies in my hands.
The iphone was my first experience with touch-screen only, and I was really hesitant. But after using it for a couple days, I realized that it was actually very quick to learn to type with. I was sending decent sized emails quickly. But dang, the web browsing speeds were so incredibly slow compared to the other phones. The iphone interface was very easy to learn, and one strong point was moving from app to app didn't seem to slow the phone down at all. But I have multiple email accounts (work, and two personal), and to move between accounts takes several taps. Another thing that I did not like was the back cover is a shiny plastic, only way to keep it decent looking is to cover it. I don't like that.
The BB Tour had a learning curve that I was not expecting, it was not nearly as intuitive as either WM6.1 or the iphone, to move from function to function takes several clicks or motions with the trackball, move here, then there, then here, press this, then that, however, once learned, it is an incredibly quick phone. Lots of finger motion, but it is extremely fast to move from app to app. The fastest of the three, but it really feels that you have to work for it. This phone feels well made, a decent keyboard (though I preferred the keyboard on my TouchPro) so typing is decent.
Now, my newest toy, the Imagio, my first interaction with WM6.5. The phone feels really solid in the hand, much more substantial than any of the other phones. Plus the back cover has a textured surface, it is very easy to grab, and will not scratch easily, so no protector needed. The HTC navigation is very similar to my TouchPro, but it is even easier and faster. The screen is stunning, truly. I love the tactile feedback when typing (a very nice compliment to the touchscreen typing, a step up from the iphone in this way), the screen is extremely touch sensitive, slightly more so than the iphone, so it takes a while to learn just exactly how to brush the screen to initiate a scroll rather than selecting something, iphone was better at this. Rotation of the screen seems to take about the same amount of time as the iphone, no winners there, but the multitouch (expand, open, close, etc) of the iphone is nice, something that the Imagio does not do. There is a zoom slider area, but it only works in some apps, so it helps, but no match for the iphone in this way. But the killer piece, to go from email account to email account takes a single touch, I love it. This phone feels much more business oriented in the navigation than the iphone, I feel that it is a superior tool for my usage, and again, I love the screen, stunning. The kickstand feature is cool, but I really have no intention of watching stuff on it, but my 10 year old daughter thinks it is cool. One drawback, as you open lots of apps, the phone does slow down, so I often go in and actually close the apps rather than just switching apps (iphone excelled at this). Oh, and battery life is fantastic, better than the ipone, but not quite up to the BB Tour. First phone that I have had that I didn't have to recharge every single night.
Bottom line, the AT&T rep picked up the iphone, and I turned in my BB Tour, we just call forward to my personal Imagio, and for the first time in seven years, I carry a single phone (personal, it is my home phone too, and for work).
Yes, I am a very happy customer.

LCD-in Swivel Holster for Motorola A855 Droid Review

LCD-in Swivel Holster for Motorola A855 Droid
Average Reviews:

This holster was everything I expected. It is very solidly built and has probably saved my phone 3 times in the 2 months I have used it. The only drawback is that it is difficult to remove the phone with one hand. I often have to remove the holster from my belt to take out the phone. Not a horrible thing but enough of a nuisance to warrant a 4 star from me.
Overall I would buy this product again for its durability and form fit.

HTC DROID Eris Cell Phone Verizon Review

HTC DROID Eris Cell Phone Verizon
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well here we have it. The HTC Droid Eris from Verizon Wireless. This phone was openly criticized on electronic review sites such as [...] because it's going to be released with the Motorola Droid when the Motorola Droid offers Android OS 2.0 and this HTC model only offers 1.5. After owning both the phones for about a week and switching back and forth (yes, Verizon hates me), I'm overly satisfied with the HTC Droid Eris too. The phone does everything you could ever want with a very large app store and overall beautiful interface. The only 2 negative notes on the HTC Droid Eris would be that it could have a slightly faster processor and the battery life isn't exactly the best. When it comes to the comparison between the Motorola Droid and the HTC Droid Eris, the operating system shouldn't be a major concern because HTC does plan to offer a free upgrade to Android 2.0. The major differences are the processor speed, the amount of RAM, and the battery life. All of those categories the Motorola Droid slightly edges the HTC Droid Eris. They're both very good options, but if you're looking for something simpler and you're not going to be using your phone constantly throughout the day the HTC Droid Eris is for you!

Motorola DROID A855 Android Phone (Verizon Wireless) Review

Motorola DROID A855 Android Phone (Verizon Wireless)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
UPDATED 5/14/2010 WITH COMPARISON TO NEW HTC DROID INCREDIBLE
If you're considering getting a Droid with Verizon, you should probably also consider the HTC Droid Incredible. I have one now and can tell you how they compare. (My wife's new-every-two came up and she kindly took my 6-month-old Droid off my hands so I could use her discount to get an Incredible. Is that true love or what??)
The first difference you notice is that the Droid has a physical slide-out keyboard while the Incredible does not. This makes the Incredible thinner and lighter (4.6 ounces compared to the Droid's 6 ounces). The weight difference doesn't look like much on paper, but it feels significant.
Other differences:
- The Droid's battery lasts a couple hours longer than the stock battery that comes with the Incredible.
- The Incredible's MP3 player has better sound quality when using good earphones or plugged into the car stereo. The Droid's sound quality isn't bad at all, but it's not up to par with the iPhone or iPod touch. The Incredible's sound quality is similar to iPhone / iPod touch.
- The Droid has 3 customizable home screens, the Incredible has 7, plus a cool way to navigate among them by seeing a thumbnail of all 7 at the same time. (I can't imagine filling up all 7, I've only filled up 2 of the 7.)
- Multitouch pinch and zoom is implemented better on the Incredible than on the Droid, though the new 2.1 Android software update that all Droids should have now has improved it substantially on the Droid.
- The Droid comes with a 16gb micro SD card, the Incredible either comes with none or with a 2gb card (mine came with none, but Verizon sometimes includes one). However, the Incredible has 8gb of internal flash memory, which is plenty to get started, and you can add a micro SD card later if you want.
- The Droid's camera is definitely not below average, and sometimes takes really good pictures. The Incredible's camera takes better pictures indoors and similar or slightly better pictures outdoors. The Incredible's camera has 8 megapixels, the Droid's has only 5. But 5 is as good or better than the vast majority of camera phones, and besides, if you set your camera at the maximum resolution, your pictures will take up more memory. With any camera, 3 megapixels is plenty enough for most purposes, including getting sharp 4" prints if you want them.
- The Droid's speakerphone is a bit louder than the Incredible's. The difference is not huge, but it's noticeable.
- The Droid runs the standard Android operating system, version 2.l. The Incredible includes that plus includes HTC Sense, which adds a few nice tweaks to the basic Android software. I don't think the difference is enough to influence most people's purchase decision.
- On paper, the Incredible's internal processor is faster than the Droid's. But I do not notice any difference in performance when running the same apps on both phones side by side. And the Droid's processor is faster than almost every other smart phone.
Overall, both phones are really really excellent, both are very fast, both have huge beautiful displays, and both have tons of great features. You can't go wrong with either phone.
I think the choice for most people will come down to the physical keyboard vs. thinness/weight issue, and possibly the camera if you like using your phone to take a lot of pictures.
That's the end of my update. Here's my original review of the Droid (sorry for the length!):
---------------------------------------------------------------
I wanted an iPhone bad, and finally gave up waiting for it to come to Verizon. Got a Droid and am very happy with it.
The screen is awesome - bigger than an iPhone's and more dense with pixels, so images are very sharp. The colors are great, and the screen is nice and bright. I had a Samsung Rogue for about 10 days. Everyone raved about the Rogue's screen. The Droid's screen blows it away. The touch screen is accurate and responsive, and very intuitive to use. About as good as the iPhone but much better than every other touchscreen phone I've tried and better than a few cameras with touchscreen controls.
The Droid's display is sharp enough and wide enough to view most web pages - including those not specifically formatted for mobile phone browsers. Because of this screen and because of the way that the Android OS implements the browser, surfing the internet is very easy, intuitive, and pleasant. Much less horizontal scrolling/panning. Much better than most phones I've tried, including the Samsung Rogue and Blackberry. The iPhone's browser is also a pleasure to use, but the Droid's screen is better at displaying full web pages.
Email is very well-implemented in the Droid. I was already a Gmail and Google calendar user before getting my Droid, and the level of integration is amazing, thanks to the Google Android OS. But any Android phone will also handle most other popular webmail, like hotmail, and also can sync with Microsoft Outlook and similar programs.
The Droid's call quality is good, and the speakerphone is loud and clear enough to be useful in most places. I get slightly better reception with the Droid than with my previous Verizon phones, especially in places with poor network coverage.
The Droid's built-in Facebook app is good, but is not as full-featured as the iPhone's FB app, which has been around longer and had more time to be improved. Yet, the Droid's FB app is as good as or better than FB access I've seen on most smartphones, including Blackberry and especially the new Samsung Rogue.
One extremely cool thing is you can easily import the contact info from all your Facebook friends into the Droid's contact manager, including their profile photo, email, phone, birthday, etc. Then, from your contact list, you can tap on any of their names and with one touch either call, email, or jump to their FB page. This is very well-implemented and easy to use, and makes the Droid's contact manager highly useful.
The Droid has pretty good voice recognition. I can tap the microphone icon in the upper right corner of the screen and say "Starbucks" and the Droid will show a list of the nearest Starbucks - and then I can pick one and either touch the phone number and Droid will call it, or I can touch the address and Droid will show its location on a map and give me driving directions.
Droid like all Android phones has Google maps built in, including satellite view, and Droid can give you directions (from your current location or any location) just like Google maps on a computer.
What's more, Droid has built-in GPS functionality and can give spoken directions, just like a Garmin GPS. I tried it and it works pretty well.
Loading music and photos onto the Droid is as easy as dragging and dropping files from your computer to a thumb drive. Droid's music player is not as refined as iPod/iPhone, but it is easy to use and works great. If you have an iPod, you probably have lots of music tracks in AAC format. The Droid will play them no problem, as long as they don't have DRM copy protection (and most don't nowadays). The Droid also plays MP3 and other formats.
The Droid has the standard 3.5" headphone jack so you can use it with any earphones, unlike some phones that have a non-standard jack. To judge the sound quality, I listened to the same track on the Droid and on an iPhone. Using $100+ headphones, the sound quality was better on the iPhone, but the difference was harder to notice with cheaper earphones or through my car stereo. Yet, the Droid's sound quality is as good or better than other music-playing wireless phones, and I've tried quite a few.
I have not yet loaded videos on the Droid. But I have watched streaming video, and it is very smooth, studder-free, and looks really great, best I've ever seen on any phone, including the iPhone and iPod touch.
The Droid comes with a 16GB microSD card. These normally go for 40 to 50 bucks at least, so I'm really grateful that Verizon and Motorola included it with the phone. It can hold a ton of music, video, and photos. For comparison, the highest-capacity iPod Nano also has 16gb of storage.
Plus, the Droid has internal memory for apps and its own operating system, so your phone will still work in the unlikely event the SD card ever fails. (My Droid worked fine even though the Verizon store guy didn't insert the SD card correctly when he set up my phone and the phone didn't recognize it. I reinserted it later and all was fine.)
The Droid's interface and OS (Android) is not quite as polished as the iPhone's. But it is still excellent, VERY easy to learn, and very easy to navigate around and use. Like most phones, the Droid is highly customizable (ringtones, wallpapers, placement of your favorite widgets and icons on your home screens), and the Android OS makes it super easy to do so.
The Droid has one-touch access to the Android app market, which has 10,000 apps so far. I've downloaded a couple dozen. There are lots of good ones, but overall the Android app market lags the iTunes app store in selection and quality, and specific apps available for both platforms tend to be a little better on the iPhone/iPod touch than on Android.
However, the Android app market is much younger than iTunes app store and is growing very quickly. Until the Droid, there were only a few phones running Android. That number will at least double over the next few months, and the number of people who use...Read more›

Store it all on the included 16 GB memory card, so you always have it on hand.
Multi-task like a master: Keep tabs on all your messages with integrated Gmail and Exchange email pushed directly to you, but don't let them get in your way. With the handy Android notification panel, go straight to the message or simply ignore it, and get back to the task at hand. And, a smart dictionary learns as you type and automatically includes your contacts.
Get where you need to go with Google Maps Navigation (Beta): DROID is the first device with Google Maps Navigation, providing turn-by-turn voice guidance as a free feature of Google Maps. It's powered by Google and connected to the Internet. Use voice shortcuts and simply say "Navigate to [your destination]," and you'll be on your way. HTC Droid Eris Phone (Verizon Wireless, Phone Only, No Service) Review

HTC Droid Eris Phone (Verizon Wireless, Phone Only, No Service)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great "smartphone" choice, especially at the contract price.
Pros:
Nice screen with lots of customization options for the interface. The custom HTC Sense UI that it uses is an improvement over the standard Android interface, with lots of cool widgets.
The sound quality is good. Some others have complained of issues with background hiss, but I haven't experienced this. Voice quality has been good in general in various locations, even with only a bar of service. Audio quality for music is OK with decent headphones, not amazing. In general, this seems to work very well as a phone which is something other smartphones seem to sometimes not be great at. Can't tell how much of that is the phone versus the Verizon network, though. I've used this out in the middle of nowhere in a basement and still been able to make/ receive calls and get 3G service.
Uses a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, so no goofy adapters are required.
There are lots of useful apps available through the Android market.
It has 2 physical buttons (whereas some other phones don't have any) which I like.
It's fairly easy to use (although see note below about documentation or lack thereof). This is fun to use!
The phone is lightweight and thin with smooth edges. It's much easier to put in your pocket or hold while talking than the Motorola Droid, which is one of the reasons I bought this. This feels more like a phone. I also like the feel of the soft-touch rubberized case.
Could be a Pro or a Con, depending on your outlook:
When on voice calls, you can hear a little of your voice in the part you have up to your ear. I like this feature a lot, as it somewhat replicates what happens with land line phones and I find it encourages you to not talk as loudly as some people normally do on cell phones. That's a very good thing. However, it may take some getting used to.
I find the battery usage is pretty good for a smartphone, but you may feel differently depending on what you are comparing to. It does better if you turn off services you are not using at the moment, such as turning off WiFi, Bluetooth, or GPS when not in use, and turning off the automatic Gmail sync (I just hit Refresh to sync when I want to rather than leaving the auto sync on). If you leave absolutely everything on, you might not get much battery life. For my typical usage (phone calls, misc web browsing, syncing with Gmail multiple times throughout the day, listening to internet radio occasionally, and watching a video or two throughout the day) it does fine. You will probably have to recharge every evening, but I have no problems having it make it through an 18 hour day and sometimes there has still been charge left after 24 hours when I forgot to charge it. The initial battery life problems that some others have complained about elsewhere were taken care of by a firmware update that happened automatically the first time I powered up the phone to set it up.
Some might not like the lack of a physical keyboard. I thought I would be one of those people, but I find the on screen keyboard to work really well after a little getting used to it. And I really like the thinner profile you can have without the keyboard. I would also thing that the reliability might be better without having the slider mechanism of a physical keyboard. I did try some other phones with physical keyboards and found many of them to be pretty awful, and this soft keyboard is certainly no worse than those. This is the custom HTC soft keyboard which I understand is much improved over the standard soft keyboard that comes with other Android phones, and is supposedly one of the best. There is a calibration feature that you can use to improve how it works for you. I recommend waiting to do the calibration after you've used the keyboard for a little bit, or if you calibrate initially then re-calibrate after you've gotten more experience with it.
This has a sensor to turn off the screen when you put the phone up to your head, to help prevent accidentally dialing or activating features when you are talking. While this is very handy, it can be annoying if you are calling in to an automated phone system where you have to enter in a lot of numbers and work your way through the menus because when you initially pull the phone from your ear the screen will be blank. I find it works best in these situations to quickly "flip" the phone away from your ear and move your hand so the phone is laying flat in your hand. That seems to make the screen turn on again the quickest. You can turn this feature off if you want, though.Cons:
Doesn't come with a manual or any other instructions or documentation. Although this phone is relatively easy to use, to get the most benefit from the extremely customizable interface you may want to download the available PDF manual, though. It does walk you through the basic setup the first time, however, so you can get up and running without a manual.
No bluetooth voice dialing, as mentioned by another reviewer. This is a limitation of the Android operating system, not of this phone, and will hopefully be fixed in a future software update. This isn't really an issue for me but might be a concern for others.
Although this comes with Google Navigation, the free turn-by-turn Google directions is not yet available for this phone because of the version of Android that it uses. However, Verizon has indicated that the OS will be updated in the first quarter of 2010 and the free turn-by turn Google directions should be able to work then. In the meantime, there are other apps (both free and paid) that will get you turn-by-turn directions now if you need it.
In general, the phone isn't perfect but it is very, very good. It's an excellent choice for someone who wants the smartphone features but also likes to use their phone as an actual phone.

Motorola XT701 Unlocked GSM Smartphone with 5 MP Camera, Android OS, Wi-Fi, gps navigation, Bluetooth and Touchscreen--International Version with No Warranty (Black) Review

Motorola XT701 Unlocked GSM Smartphone with 5 MP Camera, Android OS, Wi-Fi, gps navigation, Bluetooth and Touchscreen--International Version with No Warranty (Black)
Average Reviews:

The Purchase:
After alot of research, I decided to purchase this Motorola XT701 from Amazon last year (Amazon has a great return policy). Phone looked good when it arrived. There are different versions of this phone, the one I received was the Chinese/HK version. Unlike other 'new' phones as told in other Chinese Motorola forums, the menus didn't start in Chinese (like other Chinese/HK XT701s) - More on this later. After a quick charge, I popped the AT&T SIM card in and poof it worked. It'll work on AT&T & Tmobile. It'll work on AT&T's 3G network. It won't work on Tmobile's 3G/4G network. I did have some problems sending MMS. After re-entering the AT&T settings a couple of times it finally started to work.
Suggestions:
Add $100+ for a SquareTrade ADH Warranty. YOU WILL NEED IT. You'll need to update the phone (to Android 2.1) as soon as you get it. The built in keyboard is $&^+ (it's a English/Chinese style keyboard) - you'll want to download another one from the Android store. I'd suggest tossing the supplied MicroSD card. It's slow. Buy another one thats at least a Class 6 or better.
What's great:
1. Cool design.
2. 3G speed
3. Thin & lite
4. Apps
5. Camera + a REAL flash
6. Easy to root
What isn't great:
1. Keyboard
2. Screen - taps are unresponsive at times
2. Internal memory / App storage limit
3. Physical camera button - hard to get to
4. Phone freezes / lags - it can't keep up with ALL the bells and whistles (live wallpaper, etc)
5. No custom ROMs (its not a popular phone)
6. Getting lied to - first by Motorola, then (possibly) by the seller.
Lie #1 - When I bought the phone, Motorola stated it planned on updating the phone to Android 2.2. After saying yes then no then maybe then yes to Europe, but not China, and now no to all xt701s. If I knew this before I bought it, I wouldn't have made the purchase. Android 2.2 would solve ALOT of nagging issues with the phone. First, Android 2.2 is faster than Android 2.1. Much faster. An update would get rid of some of the lag (due to the slower the slower processor) when taking pictures, videos, running live wallpaper, etc. Second, the ability to store Apps onto the SD card. With Android 2.1, I hit the App memory limit within 2 weeks of owning the phone. Third, better keyboard and multi-touch responses. The list goes on.
Don't buy this phone if you're a power user. It will disappoint you.
Lie #2 - I treat my phones very good. For this phone, I bought an SGP XT720 case for it (one of the very best phone cases). About a month ago, the phone started to go crazy acting like someone/something was tapping the screen, making selections, dialing numbers etc. For awhile, I thought someone hacked the phone. Factory resets didn't solve the problem. This craziness evolved into a part of the screen being dead to touch. A vertical strip about 3/8" (1cm) wide located on the right side of the screen was dead. The phone was barley usable. I know its not covered in the US, but I took chance and brought it a certified Motorola repair center who told me - yes, the screen was dead, no its not covered by Motorola US and by the way, the phone looks like its been opened before (tool marks) and the screen in there doesn't have a Motorola P/N on it - hinting that it was some generic screen replacement. Which means, I didn't get the "gorilla glass" screen that Motorola had advertised. It was made known to me that this "new" phone could be a Chinese/HK refurbished phone being sold as "new" to unsuspecting US customers. It apparently happens all the time with International "No Warranty" phones. Going back to my first paragraph about the language being switched from Chinese to English when I purchased it doesn't help me believe that the phone was new and untouched between the factory and my door. Alas, I can't "prove" that it's a refurb except from what the tech told me (and the gut reaction to how greedy people can be). I really hope its a refurb because I would hope (as a Motorola fan) this isn't the way Motorola puts an expensive phone like the XT701 together. Apparently, there are many many instances of this screen issue happening to the Milestone/Droid community. As the Moto tech described, the Droid and the xt701 screen use the same technology. So this could be a defect (or the result of a bad batch of screens, or a real design flaw). It doesn't help that Motorola dropped support for this line like a hot potato late last year. When I bought it in September, the phone wasn't out in the market for that long. Two months later and Motorola started to drop planned upgrades, accessories, patches, etc.
Don't buy this phone if you're looking for a sturdy product. Do buy this phone if you'll plan on spending another $200-300 on extended warranties, cases, and a backup phone for when it randomly dies.

Conclusion:
While when I bought this phone, I considered it a 5 star product. Looking back, I see that I put up with the little issues knowing that they were going to be fixed in the next software & firmware updates. Now that I know these things won't be fixed (no updates whatsoever), it's not worth the money. Seriously. If you're going to drop $350 ~ 400 for a phone, you'd expect for it to be refined OR at least have a way to get issues resolved. No support from Motorola for software/ firmware/ warranty makes this a bad gamble. There isn't a third party community for it. So there isn't much indirect, community support either. The warning from the tech about the International refurb phones sold to North Americans as "new" isn't surprising. It's happened to me with "new" Motorola phones from eBay in the past, but I really wasn't expecting it from Amazon.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do. If I were in your shoes, I'd look elsewhere.

This was my first smartphone. The apps of the android system are great, but if you download many of them your system is likely to crash a lot. The touchscreen may be cool at first, but sometimes simple tasks such as dialing or saving a number may become annoying, especially if the system gets slower and slower due to apps. The battery life is not too good. I have to recharge the phone daily even if I didn't make a long phone call. I am satisfied with the camera, which produces very good photos in my opinion. What makes this phone great is its size, look and the camera. Although the size makes this phone pretty handy, the touchscreen and the system may not be very convenient especially for basic usage such as phone calls and sms. All in all, I still like it but I think I should have bought the version with integrated keypad.

I should have spent more time on forums before splurging over $700 on the GSM Milestone.
1] A smartphone is, first and foremost, a phone. And this is where Milestone fails miserably. While you can hear callers fine, folks on the other end have a tough time hearing you. Words go missing, speech is garbled, goes up and down in volume... At first, I though the network was to blame, but after trawling Motorola's support forums, it seems to be a common problem. People on their second and even third handsets are still experiencing horrible call quality. I switched SIM cards and tried the phone in different locations, but the problem persists.
2] The camera is useless because of the infamous 28.5 days bug. Have been regularly checking for firmware updates, but nothing so far.
3] Note that the GSM version comes with 8GB microsd, not 16GB like the Verizon Droid. I was not aware of this difference.
4] The unit I got was from the German market. There is no Google Voice Search on it! Apparently the UK version has it, but there seems to be no way to switch ROMs.
5] The phone cannot be rooted currently. While it may not matter to most people, I would love to switch over to other ROMs, especially for Voice Search.
6] No divx/ xvid support. My previous phone was the Omnia HD and the extensive file format support is something I miss on the Milestone.
7] After two weeks of struggling with the keyboard, I gave up. Maybe my fingers are too fat, and your experience might be much better.
Having said all this, the phone is amazing device to hold. Sturdy, industrial build quality, great screen, the slider takes 'manly force' to open up, Android has lot of potential and pretty close to iPhone OS in fluid use (yes, have used an iPhone for over two years)... The Market is good enough and there are lot of free quality software available.
So I would recommend you buy this phone, but with a caveat. Make sure you can return it back easily, if you run into similar problems.
As for me, the Milestone is tucked away in a drawer, waiting for firmware updates that will make it usable again.
I have moved on to the HTC HD2 and am loving that huge screen. Yes, it is Winmo, but fingers crossed - someday hackers will figure out how to put Android on it. And then I should be in phone nirvana.
Bests!

Overall I gave it 3.5 stars. The phone itself is quite good and rates 4 stars for what it is and it's price. It loses half a star for the stinginess of included equipment.
Why I chose the Zylo:
I've used touchscreen phones before (see my reviews on Sony Ericsson Satio and Vivaz) but I've always preferred buttons on a keypad. It seems faster and I don't use many apps. I loved the large screen of the touchscreen phones though, so the challenge was to find a mobile phone with a large screen and keypad.
I tried the SE Aino, but didn't like the way it worked, though the 3 inch screen was great! Sadly, the only other phones around with 2.8-3 inch screen and keypads are all no longer in production outside Japan (in Japan, they don't muck around with touchscreens. They've had 3 to 4 inch clamshell and slider phones for the last 5 years. Japan's gain is the World's loss)
That left me with the choice of 2.6 inch Nokia n86, and Sony Ericsson Hazel, and Sony Ericsson Zylo. The Hazel appealed to me because of it's new conversation system for joining all sms's together, the lightness, large keypad and the price. It was at least 50% cheaper than the Nokia n86 new.
I used the Hazel and was reasonably happy despite the somewhat funny appearance, but became a bit disappointed with the keypad as it was too flat and was not easy to see in dim light, as the white backing light had no contrast with the silver paint of the keypad.
Soon after this, I saw the Zylo at a shop, and it's looks and better keypad won me over. The Zylo is not perfect, but it's good enough for me :)
The Good:
1. 2.6 inch screen with excellent colour. Much better than the dinky 2 inch screens.
2. Phone reception, phone call quality.
3. Speaker seems loud enough.
4. Good music player.
5. Looks! Note- I have the BLACK zylo, but there's only the pink one listed in Amazon, so I'm reviewing it here. The BLACK one is different fromt eh pink and silver one in that the back of the phone isn't the usual smooth paint over plastic, but is a thin rubber. You get a tactile feel I think departs something different and gives a quality feel.
6. Keypad. Good size. Good contrast when backing lights are on.
7. Overall build quality.
8. Walkman insignia.
9. The price! Cheap as chips..almost!
10. 2GB Micro SD card included.
11. Usual Sony Ericsson UI.
The Not So Good:
1. Camera. No auto focus means you can't take close up photos clearly of smaller objects. The lower res of 3 mp is not a problem in itself. Photos which ARE in focus are quite sharp and have good colour.
2. Proprietary earphone connection. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but read on below.......
The BAD:
1. NO USB CABLE INCLUDED!!!!!!!!!
2. Included earphones are CRAPPY!!!!!!!! A "Walkman" phone with crappy earphones with proprietary connector is like putting bicycle wheels on a Porsche. If you want a phone which can handle all the normal things a mobile phone should do, and a few extra things as well, with a real keypad and reasonable sized screen, the SE Zylo is worth a look, especially at this price.
