(More customer reviews)Update: Do not buy this phone. I would re-rate it to one star if that were possible. The problem is build quality. After 6 months the outer case was chipped and scarred. A colleague who bought one at the same time has the same problem. I had the case repaired under warranty but 3 months later the replacement shell is also chipping. As soon as it's out of contract I'll be replacing the phone with a decent one.
Pros: Clear speech (both caller and called). This was a No. 1 priority - a new phone had to have clear speech. The N76 doesn't have speech clarity circuitry but it's excellent all the same. Has a great MP3 player with ample volume. Voice dialling, neat size, clam-shell form factor, 3.5mm standard headphone socket.
It synchronises with Outlook. This works efficiently and it's easy to find a date and read the appointment. It's not so easy to amend an appointment, but I can do that on the PC after I return home.
Cons: Poor quality. Expensive. The front screen is prone to showing fingerprints. Some users may need to use fingernails to operate keys as they are rather small (not a serious shortcoming). Doesn't have anywhere to attach a neck or wrist strap.
Some might criticize if for not being openable with one hand. In fact it takes a practice to use two hands. I fumbled and dropped it a few times - fortunately it's landed in my lap. It closes securely and doesn't have a spring hinge that might break down.
Not really a pro or con but the camera is a standard Toshiba fixed-focus 2mp unit with all the shortcomings this implies. It takes reasonable photos in sunny conditions but nothing to get excited about. In other-than-good light the photos are, as you would expect, very noisy. It's for emergency use only.
Battery life is very poor although it does charge quickly. From fully-charged 20 minutes listening to music, 10 or so phone calls using the loudspeaker,(say, 30 minutes in total) is enough to completely flatten the battery.

Everyone now seems to compare every phone with the iPhone ...
so here goes
N95 is unlocked - free unbridled unlocked goodness
- (for people like me who often travel abroad this is a huge plus for not having to beg your service provider to please unlock your phone that you paid money for.
N95 has a replaceable battery - means additional life for your phone and you won't have to discard a high-end device when your low-end battery inside dies - compare that to the iphone.
N95 is a open development platform - for techy users and everyone else also - this means more apps developed free for this platform (S60) rather than other closed and locked down platforms.
N95 supports bluetooth tethering to laptops and PDA's. I use my Nokia N810 Internet tablet to connect wirelessly by tethering over Bluetooth to my N95 high speed HSDPA data connection. This means I get fast internet connectivity everywhere - everywhere there is a cell tower at least.
For those less in the know iPhone doesnt support tethering.
N95 has support for A2DP Bluettoth profile - which means you can listen to Stereo music over a bluetooth headphone (like the Motorola S9). This is apart from support bluetooth headset for talking.
For iPhone users , in todays wireless day, you still have to use a wired headphone to listen to music - pretty messy.
N95's 5 MP camera is one of the best of breed in any cellphone - quality wise of photos.
N95-3 has one of the fastest 3G HSDPA data connection support in the US. (iphone 3g does have this too)
Also the Wifi and GPS in the N95 come is handy when you need those features instantly.
As a in-car GPS it certainly does not fit the bill, but when walking in the streets of NY, and you suddenly need to get some info or directions - GPS and the Wifi come in most useful.
For me having a good quality camera for instant shots (instead of caring a dedicated camera always) and the USA 3G HSDPA is what convinced me to go for the Nokia N95 over other similar featured phones (iPhone is definitely not similar featured - its a different class for me).
On a comparatove note the Nokia N78, E71, N82 and Samsung G series are comparable devices depending on which feature set you lay more importance on.
And for those who find the camera slow - please update the software with the latest N95 firmware that Nokia released recently - it speeds up the camera a lot and also some other features.
The battery on my new Nokia N95-3 lasts 1 1/2 day with HSDPA 3,5G usage in NY/NJ area and I use it daily to tether to my N810 device (which gives me touchscreen internet).

(More customer reviews)We have all seen the commercials, we have all read the advertisements and some of us may have even played with the device at our local Nokia store. At a glance, the Nokia N95 appears to be a combination of a few multimedia phones. With the exception of the GPS locator, there is nothing truely novel to this top of the range phone that costs around USD 1,000.
However, there is currently no multimedia phone out there that can squeeze so much technology into such a compact chassis: a 5-Band WCDMA/GSM transceiver, GPS locator, 5 Mega-Pixel Camera with Carl-Zeiss Optics and Auto-Focus, micro-SD card slot, wireless LAN, Bluetooth and Infrared, all in a slider phone package that's smaller and lighter than the Nokia N80.
The camera picture quality is on par with most standard high resolution camera phones, with the exception of the image resolution of course, which is at around 5 million pixel, clearly out-performing the N93, N73 and Sony Ericsson K800i plus every 3.2 mega pixel camera phone currently available in the market. The preset JPEG compression is however too high for my liking (images are normally compressed down to a horrible 600kb), but the quality of the images are generally acceptable for 8R printing. The camera flash is a let down as usual, but useful enough to take close up images in the dark. The VGA video recording feature is nothing to boast about, but useful for shooting impromptu home videos that are at least clear enough to survive editing and transfer onto your DVD-Rs.
The use of microSD cards limits the phone's maximum storage capacity to about 2GB, although I'm hopeful with the phone's incredibly fast response it will be powerful enough to support larger cards (4GB or more) when they finally become available in the market.
Wireless LAN functionality is as easy as any of the N-Series with WLAN capabilities; my only complain with this feature is that it drains alot of power from the weak supplied battery, the BL-5F. Internet browsing with the built-in WLAN out performs every other Nokia model available in the market, even the powerful communicators N9500 and N9300, in terms of speed and user-friendliness. Widescreen browsing is however only useful when an external wireless keyboard is used in place of the built-in numeric keypad.
The performance of the music player on this unit is on-par with those found on the music phones N91 / N91 8GB, having an effective 8 band equalizer with user presets. The bluetooth transceiver supports the stereo headset profile, so you can listen to music in stereo using optional bluetooth stereo headsets. The phone spots a 3.5mm multimedia plug, which allows the use of regular headphones, but the supplied headset allows you to make calls and remote control the music player (play, skip forward / backward, pause, volume up / down, lock) without reaching for the buttons on the phone. The music player software also comes with a few additional software visualization gimmicks similar to those found on Windows Media player.
Going back to the multimedia plug, it is by far one of the most innovative connectivity solution introduced by Nokia to date. A single 3.5mm plug capable of outputting stereo sounds for regular stereo headsets, while at the same time able to interface with a remote-controlled Nokia headset, and output composite video and stereo audio for outputting the N95's screen output to an external display with composite video input and analog audio inputs. The instruction manual warns users against connecting the multimedia plug to a signal output source, which may damage the N95.
The N95: It's a must have for gadget lovers or anyone who enjoys travelling light and doesn't mind parting with USD 1,000 to do it.

(More customer reviews)I have been using nokia phones for at least 12 years now. While I really liked this phone, I ended up returning it, which made me very sad, b/c i really wanted to keep it.
It has many great features, just read other reviews, I don't want to repeat and bore you.
Typing/input was too difficult/slow, it started to hurt my thumbs.
The video quality was not that great, and some of my videos played with few seconds of pause every few minutes.
My unit's call quality was poor.
Copy and paste while surfing the web, not possible.
Podcast search was poor, I had to know the rss url to get what I was looking for.
Some of the old nokia features vanished, like in my previous ones I could customize the profiles so it would vibrate from 9am to 5pm, then go back to ringing until midnight, switch back to vibrating until 6am. Not there anymore.
And of course the battery life...., very short. It should come with two power adapters so we can keep one at work and one at home.
It's a great phone but not worth $410. If the price drops again, I would love to have it.
ps. if you are in NYC or Chicago, you can get much better price at Nokia stores then at amazon.com, very strange!

I love this phone. It is feature rich and works great.
Reception is very good and calls sound loud and clear.
There are a lot of programs ( applications ) available for free that you can download and install.
It is totally unlocked so you can use any SIM you please with any GSM carrier. You sure can't do that with the iPhone which is locked to AT&T and forces you into a 2 year contract. Yuck !

The camera is the best of any phone and shoots nice stills and even better videos. Extremely handy ! Finally a phone with a camera that actually works and is useful.

There are absolutely NO other phones, that even compare, beleieve me i've dealt with Sony Erricson, Samsing, LG and what not. Nokia are the best. THey're previous Communicators were bigger, and as amaing, I never thought they could beat it. But of course, being nokia, they paved the way.
This phone, is smaller, and thinner than the previous 9500 and 9300i. It is just slightly wider, the chasm used to open it is much stronger, and the keys illumuminated (finally! in the inner keyboard), and the outer keys are amazingly easy to use. The software, the speed, and camera, all amaing. Nokia outdid themselves on this one, this is a much improved phone, working seamlessly, keeping up with every task. The camera, 3.2 MP is a nice addition as is the 2nd VGA camera. Dont be fooled by the review above me, this phone is amazing. I've had it for abt 3 months now, bought it for a very high price. I cudnt be happier...if you do hear bad reviews abt this, its coz most ppl are new to the symbian software. It allows multiple programs to run simultaneously, for e.g. you can surf the net, access the menu turn on the media player listen to music, and at the same time view a powerpoint of word file. Course, you can switch between these like on a computer, but you need to know how to. Many ppl new to this, just think like any other phone pressing the 'end call' button closes everything. Thats not the case here! Ppl forget to close the programs, and open in addition to 4 or 5, and then complain abt it crashing. It can handle many many at the same time, but sometimes you forget and have too many open (there is a dedicated button to see whats open and switch). So anyone complaining it abt it being slow, is simply not using it properly. All Sumbian 60 series phones can do this...my last phone was the N93. Enjoy

This phone will be ahead of the game for a while. The N82 and the N95 are the only units that best this phone but they go for $100-200 more. Dependable and glitch-free. Best phone for the money. Third best phone regardless of price. The stealth phone to have.
Caveat: This is a slider phone. Slider phones are not as durable as candy bar units. After 1.5 years of riding in my pocket and only one drop onto carpet, the flex cable broke. SLIDERS ARE PRONE TO FLEX CABLE ISSUES. Google 'flex cable'.

(More customer reviews)I suppose it is only a matter of time before Nokia releases the N82, given the fact that as far as technical specification goes, the N82 is almost a clone of the N95, minus the sliding mechanism.
The software (and possibly hardware) for the N82 has improved, in terms of responsiveness and speed over the 2006-2007 N series models. The screen of the N82, although not the sharpest among the N-series, serves well as a view finder and as a small display for internet surfing. The display rotates according to the orientation of the screen, but if you find this feature disruptive (say if you're lying down while typing), you can always turn the feature off.
In general, the N82's responses are faster than that of the N95, probably due to the fact that it has a simpler electronic architecture (mono-block and smaller screen). There is very little delay when you switch the camera on and off, and the capture time is very short compared to most of the N-series in the market.
The music player built into the N82 is identical to that of the N95, but due to the above advantage, the player never seem to experience any hang-ups when it's used with other applications running in the background.
The built-in GPS feature is a bit of a headache to use due to the smaller screen, and possibly even smaller GPS receiver. I've never needed the voice guidance feature for my GPS receiver before, so not having it is fine with me. To me, the GPS feature has always been more of a gimmick for Nokia to push their N-series devices to the consumer rather than benefiting them in anyway. Because unless you can run faster than Carl Lewis, the GPS locator will not display any movements on the phone screen at all so it won't be able to tell you if you're walking in the wrong direction until you've travelled a few hundred meters down the wrong way.
The built-in digital camera comes with Carl-Zeiss optics at 5 magepixel like the N95, with added Auto Focus assist lamp (a super bright red LED) and a bright Xenon flash. The photos, although do not appear to be much larger (in byte size that is) than the N95's, seems to have less heavy compression artifacts and the flash distribution seems to be well balanced for subjects and objects over 1.5 meters away.
This device is a must have (if you can get over the overly titanium-silver look of the device) for anyone who hates sliding phones but can't live without all the crazy features that comes with the N95 and the N95-8G. The 3.5mm multifunction socket works the same way as the N95, giving you video output, audio output and headset functions as well. I'm not sure at this point just how powerful the supplied battery is, but the phone definately seems to be beating the N95 when it comes to power consumption.. the N95 loses half of it's battery charge halfway through the day, while the N82 appears to be able to stay at full bar 12 hours after its initial charging. Impressive.

Phone pros: good/decent signal, good/decent call quality. Good external numeric keypad. Predictable battery life (2.5-3 days, though I talk maybe 1 hour in that time). Got a spare battery off an online auction site for cheap. Can use .wav files as ring tones (MP3 -> .wav via Audacity? I haven't tried). SOLID build.
Phone cons: somewhat large (candy-bar with a big screen!), have to get used to the earpiece position (can't rest the phone on my ear)... And once, though the keypad was locked, the phone (slipped into my pant pocket) called up my friend. Weird. But that hasn't happened again. Ringtones could be louder.
PDA - I can sync my contacts with Outlook and keep track of my appointments, which is all I really want. Have also managed to use Gmail via POP3; the VoqMail application does not support POP3.
(For POP3, you have to enter the server IP address and port completely (pop.gmail.com:995, smtp.gmail.com:465), I had some trouble with that. Internet connection via GPRS also has somewhat of a weird work-around - look up the cingular.com FAQ for setting up the Audiovox SMT5600 SmartPhone, nice screenshots.)
PDA pros: QWERTY flip-out keypad good for notes, contacts, appointments. My fingers are not slim, but not fat either - so I can enter data/SMS at a good pace. SD expansion slot. Windows Mobile 2003 SE actually, FWIW. "Flight" mode - but I still turn it off in the plane!
PDA cons: Has frozen (only!) a couple times in 3 months, can't find a reset pinhole, so took out the battery... (momentary flashback of my last PDA - a Toshiba e310).
Have had the Sierra Voq for over three months now, happy camper. Way better than the Motorola v180 (which it replaced) or the e310. Now, if only I could get a decent non-leather cover for it... Too bad Sierra stopped production, but if they hadn't, I wouldn't be able to own this wonderful phone! One man's poison....

The Samsung D900 is part of Samsung's Ultra Edition line, and for good reason: It's ultra thin, ultra powerful, and ultra cool. The first thing to get straight about this phone is that it is not about form, but function. It is not the slimmest or sexiest phone out there, nor does it have the most awe-inspiring user interface compared to the likes of the iPhone. On the other hand, it has every capability that you will find on any phone these days:
* A 5MP camera with autofocus, LED flash, and VGA video recording, Carl Zeiss lens, and a 1/2.5" CCD (same as in most compact digital cameras). Various shooting modes (macro, night, night portrait, sports, etc...), ISO control, flash control w/red-eye reduction. Immediately send pictures via bluetooth, email, MMS, etc.
* GPS with Nokia Maps application and optional voice navigation. Various third party applications (e.g. Google Maps for S60) support its built-in GPS as well.
* 3.5G (HSDPA) connectivity (see note about models below), This gives clearer voice and much faster data downloads (theoretically up to 3.5 Mbps; in practice I have seen from 900 Kbps to about 2.2 Mbps, depending on location and time of day).
* WiFi (802.11g) with WEP, WPA/WPA2, and EAP/802.1x authentication (for corporate environments)
* Support for nearly every Bluetooh profile in existence: A2DP for stereo audio, DUN for tethering the phone's internet connection with a laptop (for on-the road use), OBEX to send/receive files and browse the internal filesystem from a computer.
* 3.5mm headset jack, infrared port w/send/receive utility, FM tuner.
* "Dual slider" design: Slide display up to reveal numeric keypad; and down to reveal four multimedia buttons (Play/Pause, stop, rewind, fast forward). Sliding it down also changes the display orientation from portrait to landscape; sliding it up switches it back.
* Symbian S60 smartphone OS: In addition to thousands of available generic Java (J2ME) mobile applications, there are also nearly an equal number of native applications that can access additional functionality/hardware on the phone (for instance, there is one that uses the built-in accelerometer to control your computer's mouse cursor by simply tilting the phone, and another one that uses the built-in GPS to "geotag" pictures with your location as you use the camera).
* Built-in applictions include QuickOffice to read Microsoft Office files (DOC, PPT, XLS), Adobe Acrobat Lite reader (PDF), RealPlayer (most media files/streams), home screen "Search" applet to search the Internet and local content, various organizer apps (clock w/unlimited alarms, phonebook with unlimited entries, calendar w/unlimited meetings, todos, memos, reminders..), calculator, unit converter -- you get the picture. Notably absent, though, is a Timer/Stopwatch application; however you can easily download a third party one (e.g. from Smartphoneware).
* Other S60-specific applications include Nokia's Internet Radio to stream live radio streams, "RotateMe" to automatically rotate the screen depending on your phone orientation, "Fring" mobile Skype/AIM/MSN/Google Talk/etc.. client, Google Maps with GPS support, Google home screen search applet, Mobile Weather app, "ExtGPS" to share the internal GPS information over bluetooth (e.g. to the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet), YouTube player, emTube (also for YouTube access), etc.
* One of the best mobile web browsers out there. Based on AppleWebKit (a.k.a. KTML, the web engine used in the likes of Apple Safari and KDE Konqueror), it renders web pages "as they were meant to be". And unlike that other phone that claims to do the same, the N95 also has a built-in Flash Lite player - so web pages that use flash will work as well. Plus, you are of course free to download and use other browsers, such as the excellent, super-fast and bandwidth-saving Opera Mini (operamini.com).
* Mail client with POP-3 and IMAP support (including IMAP-IDLE, a.k.a. "push mail"; alternatively it can poll at specified intervals).
* Mac OS X users: Although the phone does not come with bundled software for Mac OS X, you can download "Nokia Multimedia Transfer" (to synchronize photos and music with iPhoto and iTunes) and an iSync plugin (to synchronize the address book, calendar, todo etc) with your Mac - both from Nokia's web site. Also, setting up your Mac to access the Internet via the phone (providing that you have a data plan, e.g. the $15/month "MEdia Net Unlimited" from AT&T) is super-easy: When you first pair with the phone, the needed WAP/APN information is pulled automatically from your Phone's SIM card. (Ironically, this works for nearly every phone, except Apple's own iPhone; this one has a very crippled bluetooth stack, and does also not support tethering). UPDATE: I've learned that such tethering violates AT&T's Terms of Service. Moreover, there are no plans available for this phone (or most others) from AT&T that specifically allow tethering. If you do so anyway, stay under the radar, and don't abuse it - e.g. by using your cellular data plan as your main internet service. MODELS:

There are 5 subflavors of the N95 released to date:
* The original N95 (a.k.a. N95-1, a.k.a. RM-159) targeted mainly the European and Asian markets; while it had quad-band GSM (2G) support for use in nearly every country, including the USA, it had support only for the international W-CDMA (UMTS/HSDPA, a.k.a. 3G/3.5G) frequency (commonly referred to as UMTS-2100). Nonetheless, this phone was later made available for retail in the USA as well, through Nokia's flagship stores, online site, and 3rd party retailers. It had manual shutter lens protection (you would slide it open to start the camera), 64MB of runtime/dynamic memory (RAM), and a 900 mAh battery. Common complaints about this phone was that it would often run out of memory when several applications were open, and that the battery life was too short.
* The N95-2 (a.k.a. "N95 8GB", a.k.a. RM-320) increased the screen size from 2.6" to 2.8" (diagonal), increased RAM from 64MB to 128MB, increased the battery size from 900 mAh to 1200 mAh, removed the slider mechanism for opening the camera lens, replaced the µSDHC card slot with 8GB of internal flash, and replaced the silver faceplate with an all-black design. However, the bands supported were the same: W-CDMA 2100MHz, GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz - so although it will work fine with both AT&T Wireless, T-Mobile USA and Rogers, it does not support 3G/3.5G network speeds in North America. Nonetheless, as with the N95-1, Nokia has sold this phone in North America as well until just a few weeks ago; so possibly, this is the phone sold here (Unfortunately, Nokia's own sales channels do not normally make this distinction, and Amazon's product description is also somewhat lacking). UPDATE: As the product description now clearly says, this is the N95-4 (a.k.a. N95 8GB NAM) model.
* The N95-3 (a.k.a. "N95 NAM", RM-160) is the first model targeted for North America. Most of the exterior design is similar to the N95-1 (Silver faceplate, 2.6" screen, µSDHC slot), but like the N95-2, it has 128MB of RAM, a 1200 mAh battery, and no manual slider for the camera shutter. The main reason for its existence is that it swapped the original UMTS-2100 (WCDMA) frequency for UMTS-850 and UMTS-1900, so that it would work with AT&T Wireless's 3G/3.5G network. Until just a few days/weeks ago, this would have been the "best" choice for US customers.
* The N95-4 (a.k.a. "N95 8GB NAM", RM-421) is identical to the N95-2, except that like the N95-3, it swaps UMTS-2100 for UMTS-850/1900. It was released just a couple of weeks ago, though, so if Amazon got their inventory of "n95 8gb" devices from Nokia prior to this, it would have been the N95-2 rather than the N95-4. (The exterior and labeling of both is the same). Also, the firmware revision numbers are different, so some utilities (like the "Nokia Multimedia Transfer" application and iSync plugin for Mac OS X) do not yet recognize this phone. UPDATE: The N95-4 is now fully supported by most applications, including Nokia Multimeda Transfer and iSync plugin.* The N95-5 is for Japan; it is a stripped-down version of the N95-1 (e.g. no WiFi). This is almost an irrational comparison, given how different these devices are:
* The iPhone is almost entirely about "sex appeal": Polished, slim, with a large screen for viewing content, multi-touch user interface (we've all seen how to zoom in and out using finger pinches, do inertial scrolling through a list of contacts, etc). As such, it is very big on "usability". The N95 is not even a touch-screen device. (Personally I actually prefer "hard" keys w/tactile feedback; having used the touch-screen based Motorola A1200 MING in the past. Touch screens are not very good for, for example, dialing a number without looking at the screen).
* The iPhone feature set is, at best, mediocre. Yes, it has WiFi - so does a lot of other phones. Yes, it has a "WYSIWYG" web browser; again, so do so many others (including the 3-year old Motorola A1200 MING, another touch-screen phone by the way). Calls: Nokia always excels in voice quality and minimal dropped calls. Sound level is very good too.
Camera: the only ones comparable are the SonyEricsson cameraphones. Not only is this 5megapixels, but the most important thing--lens optics--is great. A lot of phones out there have high megapixel counts but still take muddy pictures.
GPS: it has it and it works fast
High-speed data: supports 3G and 3.5G and WiFi
The only slight negative is size and battery life. For a phone with so many things going on you can't expect the best battery performance. Still I got over 3 hours of talk time in on a day when I didn't use the GPS function). Plan on recharging every night if you talk for a couple hours, especially if you use a bluetooth headset.

It's based on S60 software operating on the Symbian OS, enabling you to personalize the N95 by choosing from a wide choice of compatible applications that can be downloaded--including games, navigation, entertainment, and productivity titles. This version of the Nokia N95 (model N95-3) has an internal 160 GB memory, and it includes a MicroSD expansion slot compatible with cards up to 4 GB in size.
This unlocked cell phone can be used with a GSM network service provider and it provides quad-band connectivity (850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz). It does not come with a SIM card, and it requires that you provide a SIM card for usage with your selected service provider.
The innovative 2-way slide concept makes it easy to switch between different modes, going from reading maps to watching a video with a simple slide.
