I decided to purchase the w995a after carefully researching some viable alternatives such as the Nokia n86 8mp, the still-good and underrated n96, and the n82. I chose the Sony because it looks and feels better than the other phones, not because it IS better than the others. Let me explain.
This phone is absolutely gorgeous. Its made of brushed metal, it feels amazing in your hand, and the sliding mechanism is nearly perfect. It's a feature phone, so you really don't have any options to customize the UI like you would with a symbian phone (i.e. the nokias mentioned above), but if this doesn't bother you (which it did not bother me), it really won't matter because the menu layout is really perfect and intuitive. It has great sound, it's beautiful when lit up, and the call quality is superb. That being said, it's simply not a "better" phone than the nokias I've listed.
For one, the camera is simply "ok." Shots taken indoors will disappoint you, while those taken outdoors look very good. The video recording is old-school at 30fps QVGA while the nokias mentioned record DVD quality video at 30fps in VGA. Not to mention the nokias have carl ziess optics (regarded as one of the best lense makers in the world).
I decided not to go with the Nokia N86, it's "closest" competitor. The N86 is a better phone, it has an 8gb hard drive while the w995a comes with an 8gb card. The nokia can be expanded with up to a 16gb card, has a variable aperture 8mp that takes exquisite photos, and has the ever- customizable symbian UI. But its ugly, and plastic; typical Nokia.
So, to sum it up:
THE GOOD:
-beautiful
-well built
-beautiful interface
-good pictures
-excellent media player
-best sliding mech. ever
THE BAD:
-other phones in its price range are arguable better
-should take great pictures, not good ones
-video recording is 2004-era phone
-has a TFT 256k screen, while all others in its price range have AMOLED 16M screens.
It was a tough choice, but for me, the look and feel of this one took the cake!

This Walkman phone offers a full-function digital audio player that's compatible with MP3 and AAC files, and it includes Sony Ericsson's innovative "shake to shuffle" feature. With Shake Control activated, just flick your wrist and a vibration lets you know that the track has been changed--a new song from your current playlist is randomly selected and automatically played. Playback settings also include an equalizer, playlists, stereo widening, and shuffle and loop modes. This Walkman phone also features a flight mode that lets you keep listening to tunes with the phone's network connectivity turned off.
The W995a is also the first Sony Ericsson phone to include the new Media Go PC application, which enables effortless and automatic transfer of any audio, photos and videos between your phone and computer via drag and drop. It features include:
Automatic sync: Sync your music playlists automatically to keep the phone updated with your new music
Auto convert: Media Go gives you the best quality playback of multi-media content on a mobile phone. There's no need to use extra applications to be able to bring your media with you.

Audio CD Ripping: Use Media Go to burn your CDs and bring your music and audio books with you

With the TrackID service, you can identify any song that you can hear by just recording a snippet of sound using the microphone. After sending the file for recognition, you'll have the name, artist and album sent to your phone. It also includes a built-in FM radio with RDS, which displays the name of the currently playing song (when tuned to compatible radio stations).
Sony Ericsson's SensMe technology is used to incorporate mood analysis into the track details, which allows you to create playlists that suit your mood. Select SensMe in the Sony Media Go software, and it will mood-analyze all MP3 files on the computer. When you transfer music from a CD or a PC to your phone using Media Manager, the tracks will automatically be analysed. Instead of selecting tracks for your next playlist, just select your mood.
Handsfree communication is easy thanks to the integrated speakerphone. This phone also provides Bluetooth wireless connectivity (version 2.0), and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, and file transfer. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. This phone also offers integrated Wi-Fi networking (802.11b/g), enabling seamless connectivity with wireless networks at work, at home, and on the roam via Wi-Fi hotspots at airports and coffee shops.
Take dazzling pictures with the 8.1-megapixel camera with 16x digital zoom, which can be used just like you would with a standard digital camera by holding it horizontally with the screen acting as your viewfinder. And with the phone's GPS capabilities, you can tag your photos with information on where it was taken. The Face Detection and Auto Focus capability enables the camera to detect and focus on the face of your subject rather than the background, so that you can take sharp and high quality pictures of your friends. The phone also incorporates the latest in lighting technology--Photo Flash--giving you better quality pictures even in low-light conditions.
An image stabilizer compensates for those small movements, reducing the chance that your photo comes out blurred. The BestPic function gives you nine chances to capture the precise moment you want. As well as your shot, the phones take four images as you press the button, and another four afterwards. Pick the one you want, trash the rest. Select the Photo Fix function to improve pictures that you think can be better. In a one-click operation, brightness, light and contrast are adjusted to give you the best possible picture. The phone also provides support for PictBridge technology so you can print your photos without the need of a PC.

Sony Ericsson K550i Cyber-shot Unlocked Cell Phone with 2 MP Camera, MP3/Video Player, Memory Stick Micro Slot--U.S. Version with Warranty (Jet Black) Review

The k550i phone is a great small feature-packed phone. The camera on the phone takes excellent pictures, suitable for making 4x6 prints. The phone has a panorama mode that allows you to stitch together 2 or 3 images with a very good stitch guide. Also, there is a nice image editor built into the phone that can do auto-levels, contrast, brightness, and a bunch of other nice tools. You can see many full size pictures by visiting flickr and searching on "k550i". The MP3 player works great ... sound quality is excellent, though volume is soft and some may find the max volume is too low. You will want to get a micro memory stick if you want more than a few songs. I like how the included headphones double as a handsfree set and transition from music to phone back to music effortlessly. I found creating a few playlists very intuitive and easy. Battery life is very good, even with lots of music/radio playing and picture taking. The radio features trackID, which takes a sample of the song you are listening to and looks up the artist, song title, and album ... actually have found it very useful(requires data plan). The web browser is a good WAP browser for basic use ... I like that you can change to landscape screen orientation browsing.
OK, now for the annoyances: When the flash is turned on, the LED lights stay lit constantly, and they are very bright ... human targets usually complain. I was surprised that digital zoom for the camera is only allowed at VGA resolution, and not at 1MP. There is a workaround ... after taking a 2MP picture, you can zoom in on it and save the visible area to a new picture. I take pictures and immediately send them to flickr ... the phone presents a nag screen warning that the file is large, which cannot be turned off. The "take picture" button is a two-step button like most cameras, with a focus step then a snap step, but the second step takes a hard press causing you to shake the camera and get a blurry picture. Instead, I use the center joystick button on the face of the phone, which focuses and immediately takes a picture. Sending a picture as an email immediately after taking it requires some kooky steps: (press joystick in, select "view", zoom out one step, then select More->Send As->Email).
Despite the flaws, I am very happy with the phone considering the price and features.

Imaging and Entertainment Blurring the lines between high-end digital cameras and cell phones, the built-in 2.0-megapixel Cyber-shot camera with LED flash and autofocus is ideal for catching and sharing smiles on the fly. Use your shots to keep in touch. Send a picture message, or upload to your blog for all to see. You can even connect a USB cable and send straight to a printer. The phone's camera also supports video capture and playback. Video clips are ideal for those unexpected great moments in life. Use the pictures you take as wallpaper to dress up your phone to your different tastes. There's even an included application called Video DJ that allows you to edit video footage right on your phone. Make it look great with advanced editing options before uploading footage to your blog.
The K550i is a powerful gaming companion, too, with support for enhanced, Java-based 3D gaming. The phone comes preloaded with several games and more are downloadable from Sony Ericsson. Sony Ericsson K790a Phone (Unlocked) Review

Sony Ericsson K790a Phone (Unlocked)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used to own the W800i (Walkman) phone. I loved everything about it, but the K790 / K800i phone is EVEN better:
1. bigger and brighter screen size and higher resolution. As a result, the phone is slightly larger than the w800i but the benefits outweighs the size increase. The icons are bigger and clearer. Font size is increased so it's much easier to read text messages. You can now surf the web (not just mobile web pages.) Being able to display the photos on a larger screen is great.
2. I LOVE the RSS reader. With a click of a button, the phone updates the latest news from BBC and Google news and SONY news and updates. I just skim through the head lines which are linked to fuller articles on the websites. This is great for me who commutes on the train every morning. Great time killer standing up or sitting on the train.
3. Walkman is still great. It's not as buggy as W800i. But there is no more MegaBass. It still sounds great. Unfortunately, the phone does not come with memory card. I had to buy one M2 (Memory Stick MICRO) which I had to wait about a month to get since it's really new and not many stores have them in stock. So if you want to fill up the phone with songs, built-in 64MB will not be enough.
4. The camera quality is excellent (for phone camera, that is). I am very particular about digital cameras and picture quality. I find that this camera is overall not as good as a basic, stand-alone, cheap 3 Mpix cameras that are cheaper. HOWEVER, it good lighting condition, it takes great picutres. There is definitely more noticible purple fringe and digital noise than a dedicated digital camera. In low-light condition, even with the super bright flash light, the picture quality is sub-par. There is too much noise. The metering on the camera is so-so. If there is a strong lighting constrast between your subject and the background (such as bright windows), I find the camera has a hard time balancing the light--making the subject too dark. The ability to have a portable camera with me at all time, out weighs all the imperfections I get from it. As a graphic designer, it's important to have access to a camera at all time to grab images for design inspirations.
5. I am curious to start the photo Blog--a built-in feature in the phone.
6. Games look great on this camera. 3D games like MiniGolf and Tennis which came with the phone are amazing.
7. Built-in ring tones and background screen/wall paper sound and look SO much better.
8. Email function works great. I have a dot.mac account and can view and send emails without problems. Right now, the phone does not support flash player so I can't view any .fla files. I don't really care but sometimes websites do require that flash player is installed.
This phone has amazed me and impressed me beyond my expectations. I hope more of my friends have it so that I can try to video phone function!

The phone also supports the SyncML PC synchronization standard, which lets you synchronize your PC-based calendar, contacts, notes and tasks with your K790a.
Imaging and Entertainment The big story about this phone is, of course, the camera. At 3.2 megapixels, it can produce incredible images, but the real advantage comes from the camera's autofocus, which allows you to take crisp pictures at varying distances from your subjects. The camera also features an image and video stabilizer compensates for any small movement of your hand when you're taking a picture and shooting video. Meanwhile, a built-in Xenon flash helps you get great results in all kinds of lighting situations.
There's also a unique feature called BestPic that lets you capture several images in quick succession with one press of the camera key. BestPic lets you pick the best and delete the rest. Dedicated controls on the side of the device will make you forget you're holding a phone in your hand, and when you're ready to share your gorgeous images, you can print them wirelessly via Bluetooth, or via USB, on a PictBridge-capable printer. Sony Ericsson also provides a free picture blogging feature, which allows you to upload pictures from your phone to a place where all your friends and family can view them online.
The K790a is also a great music phone. Load up your favorite songs in MP3 or AAC format on a memory card and listen to your heart's content. The user-friendly music player application makes it easy to organize and enjoy your tunes. There's even an FM radio for catching the big game or your favorite stations.

This is the worst phone I have ever owned. I got this to replace my W810i. I have had many Sony Ericsson phones, and I like the way they work and the way they look. This one, when it is working, has a nice interface. It improves upon the previous phones in this area. The camera is a good one, and the voice quality is good. The problem is that the phone dies randomly. One day, I picked it up and it was dead. A quick internet search reveals that the phone's software is fundamentally flawed. Search "k850 brod" and you will see the hundreds of people stricken with this problem. The only recourse offered by se support was to send it back to them for 10 days, and when it comes back, the same problem could happen again.

Select the Photo Fix function to improve pictures that you think can be better. In a one-click operation, brightness, light and contrast are adjusted to give you the best possible picture. Other photographic features include a 16x digital zoom, red-eye reduction, picture blogging capabilities, and video capture (up to QVGA at 30 fps).
The digital audio player is compatible with a wide variety of formats, including MP3, AAC/AAC+, and WMA. Additionally, you can play MPEG4 and 3GPP videos.
This phone provides Bluetooth version 2.0 wireless connectivity with EDR (enhanced data rate), and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, and audio/video remote control. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. You can connect your laptop (either via Bluetooth or wired USB) and enjoy dial-up networking--surf the Internet, send email, and access files from a server.
If you're looking for a mobile productivity partner, the K850i has you covered. Support is built in for sending and receiving pictures, text, graphics, and sound via MMS messages. When used in combination with the phone's built-in still and video camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging possibilities. T9 text entry, a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.
The phone also ships with a built-in email client with support for POP3 and IMAP4 protocols, while the included Access NetFront Web Browser allows you to surf full HTML web sites. The K850i also supports RSS feeds, allowing you to use your phone to view up-to-the-minute news and other content from selected Web sites and blogs. Just subscribe to the feed and let it come to you.
