(More customer reviews)I did quite a bit of research before investing in my first handheld device and I had a very limited budget for it. I looked at the Palm devices, and the Nokia n800 series, as well as several Dell and HP pocket pc models. I decided that, at least for now, Windows Mobile appeared the best way to go in terms of ease of use and value and I'm very happy that I made that decision. I wanted to spend between $200 and $300 and was looking for a device that had a key pad included, WiFi, and a basic word processing application. The hw6925 had all of these features PLUS it is also a phone. I'm not currently using the device as a cell phone, but I may in the future. I've been delighted with the functionality of the Windows Mobile software--it is very easy to use and includes Mobile versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint! I also had no problem setting up the e-mail software included to work with my ISP. Overall, I simply can't believe that this much functionality is now available at this price. I've invested in a portable keyboard and plan to leave my much too heavy laptop at home when I'm working away from my office. The version of the hw6925 that is listed here is for Cingular and is not unlocked. I would have preferred an unlocked phone, but to get that, I would have spent twice the price of this one. If you're looking for a business-ready pocket pc, I highly recommend this one.

(More customer reviews)I've had the 6945 for about two weeks now. So far it is performing very well. Setting up the email took a while to figure out. If you are like me, you hate all the clutter and useless software pre-installed on these devices, so it took me a while to clean up the view.
I don't use the Outlook Sync function, but it looks like it works well. The auto-sync function is something to be aware of. The first time I did auto-sync it wiped-out my contact list on my PC and replaced with the few contacts on my sim card. Luckily it only deleted the contacts to my outlook delete folder so it was easy to restore. Here are some PROs and CONs after about two weeks of use:
PRO:
1) Wifi or Cingular GPRS email works well. You will have to set up two different accounts - one for your Wifi and another for when you are using GPRS, but that is easy to do. The reason you should do this is so that when you are on Wifi you can send via the Wifi server instead of the Cingular GPRS wireless network. I have set up both a work and personal home email account (both POP3). Looks like this device can handle several more email accounts if necessary.
2) Internet explorer works very well. This is not a lame mobile web browser that strips down sites. It is the real deal. Websites look just like they do on your PC or laptop - only smaller. You can customize the view pretty easily. Favorites folder is easy to set up and the address bar is easy to use.
3) The screen is very nice. I find myself using both the built in keyboard and the on screen touch pad. Both work very well. Resolution is very good.
4) WM-5 is very nice. I've used the Work and Excel programs so far. They are essentially the same as on your PC. Why anyone would want to use an iPaq to edit a DOC or XLS file is beyond me, but if you need to do this you can. I have not had a chance to use the Powerpoint viewer yet, but I'm sure it works as well as Word and Excel.
5) I purchased a 1GB mini-SD storage card. That is very easy to pop in and out.
6) You can use MP3s or WMA files as your ring tone - that's pretty cool.
7) The device is very solid. Not as big as you would think. Fits well in your pocket or on a belt clip. Looks like it will hold up well. The pen locks in the side and is also pretty solid. Not like the Treo, which I've heard is very fragile.
8) And now for the Phone - It works very well! I was surprised because most people complain about the phone quality on these devices. I find the sound quality to be as good as my RAZR. The Cingular Sim-Card can be swapped in and out between my RAZR and iPaq, so if I am going to a sporting event or bar I and dont want to bring the iPaq I can just swap the sim-card right back into the RAZR and it works. I had to call Cingular and get them to change my phone to the iPaq. This was purely for data.
9)YOU DO NOT NEED TO PURCHASE THE "Treo Package". Don't let Cingular sell you that extra crap. I simply added the MediaNet200 package for $19.99 which gives you unlimited Media + 200 text messages a month. That is plenty of text messages and the unlimited data gives you all the web surfing and emailing you can do!
10) GPS navigation is pretty neat little function. You have to download the maps from Microsoft Pocket Streets, but they are free. The GPS sucks battery life like crazy, but if you are on the road in a strange city this can be very helpful.
11) Windows Media player works just like your PC. I added about 750mb of music, so the device is actually an MP3 player as well. It has an external speak or you can stick in headphones (be aware, using the media player sucks battery life).
CONS:
1) I'd say the biggest con is the battery life. If you are on just GPRS/Phone with stand by (no talking, emailing or surfing) it will probably last about 2 days. However, using the phone or emailing cuts that down to about only 12-14 hours. If you set up the WiFi as well as have the phone on, your battery life is about 8-10 hours. If you also have the GPS and Bluetooth on, I'd say 5-6 hours. My advice is to not use the GPS or Bluetooth unless you really need them. And, if you are going to be on WiFi, leave the device in the craddle. The USB charging is very slow but the AC adapeter chargest the device to full in about 2 hours. YOU CAN PURCHASE A BIGGER BATTERY - and you probably should.
2) Cingular does not support the 6945. You will have to tell them you have the 6925. I called HP - they are identical except that the 6925 is Cingular only and the 6945 is unlocked for T-Mobile as well. Obviously Cingular wants you to buy the 6925 instead, but the 6945 is the same. If you call Cingular for support, just tell them you have a 6925 to avoid even having to explain things to them.
3) The ring volume is not that loud. But, it does have vibrate.
4) Do not buy the leather case that Amazon sells with the device for like $[...]. The device comes with a belt clip that works just fine. If you want something nicer, go buy it in person....All in all this is an excellent device. I use to carry a cell phone and my laptop on the road - now all I need is this. Again, you can swap your sim-card in and out, so keep your old cell phone for times when you don't want to carry around the iPaq.
I only gave it 4 stars because of the battery life. That can be fixed by purchasing the more powerful battery, but that will cost you extra. Also, the device is pretty expensive relative to the Treo or Q or Blackberry. None of those devices have WiFi though.

Razr - Thin & light, but brain-dead synchronization with Outlook.
Cingular 8125 - Does everything, but big, heavy and some tasks needed the stylus.
My requirements:
- Quadband (world phone - works almost everywhere)
- Bluetooth (for headsets etc)
- WiFi (to connect to the Internet for faster surfing and places like Japan where Quadband doesn't work)
- Perfect synchronization with Microsoft Outlook
- Keypad (T9 - don't text enough for a full keyboard)
- No stylus needed
- Don't care about 3rd party software, but it's nice
The phone: The HP iPaq 510!
It fits my requirements great! And the Voice Commander software is pretty neat (some may think it's gimmicky, but it helps when you're driving a car).
Only minor niggles - wish it was even thinner (but the upside is HP put in a hefty batter) - keys require getting used to as kinda smaller (but hey, you got a big gorgeous display above them). Some people have complained about the screen not having higher resolution, but I find it fine (170x220).
With a little customization, this phone can be tailored to you! I changed the Shortcut keys, installed SmartphoneNotes (to sync Notes with Outlook), recorded some voice tags to improve the speech recognition (it actually can recognize speech without training, if necessary!) It will even switch from Normal to Silent (or Vibrate) mode whenever you're in a meeting! Sweet!
Note: Press and hold the Home key to get quick access to other function!
Love this phone already!

PROs
-Ipaq has built-in GPS receiver (not software!) the others do not
-Ipaq has two expansion slots (1 mini-SD and 1 SD slot), the others have one
-Ipaq has a 1.3 megapixel camera w/flash
-Ipaq has a terminal services client (allows me to remotely login to my cpu and control it)
CONs
-Ipaq does NOT have built-in WiFi (wireless internet card), the others do
-Ipaq comes with 64 MB of memory (ROM and RAM)
-Ipaq does not come with GPS software
-Ipaq battery life needs major improvements
-Ipaq doesn't support voice dial
NEUTRAL
-Ipaq uses Windows Mobile
One of the main reasons I chose this phone was that all of the CONs were addressable. I could get around the WiFi problem with a WiFi card for my SD slot and I could upgrade my memory by 1 GB with the mini-SD slot. If I didn't want a WiFi card, I could have gotten a 4 GB SD card and used the mini-SD for something else. As for the battery, I could buy another one and the GPS software I could buy as well.
COST
Main point here is that it costs more than just buying the phone.
1) $200 phone: I bought this through my phone carrier (Cingular) and renewed by 2-year plan. I bought it refurbished because I decided paying 400-500 for technology that is still in its infancy is quite ridiculous. When buying a pocket PC (ppc) you pay for much more than just the phone.
2) $32 1GB mini-SD card (Kingston): I bought this on Ebay. This included shipping and taxes.
3) $78 SD WiFi card (Spectec): I also bought this on Ebay. I bought the SDW-821. I bought this for two reasons:
- it supported both 802.11b and g
- it only stuck out of the SD slot aobut 5 mm. All other cards I found stuck out a couple cm.
4) $8 car charger. Bought this on ebay. The phone only comes with a wall charger and a cradle.
5) $150 GPS software (Navteq)
6) $8 extra battery
7) $50 Bluetooth (handsfree) headset MS850 - DO NOT GET THIS because the MS810+ series are the only Bluetooth headsets not supported by the hw6515. You can make calls fine, but the connection gets dropped on incoming calls.
Total: $528
This total was with a lot of bargain shopping. Be careful when buying on Ebay because there are a lot of people selling knockoff technology being shipped from factories in China that break after a couple weeks.
NOTES:
-I only pay 39.99/mo for my cell phone plan.
-I do not pay for internet usage fees because I use my WiFi card for internet access. There are free hotspots jumping up all over the place and hopefully Google gets their way and blankets the US with free wireless internet! I also have a T-mobile hotspot account for places that support this on my travels.
-If you get this and the GPS software you do NOT have to pay Cingular every time you use it. The GPS software and the GPS receiver work independently of Cingular so you never have to worry about getting billed extra by using this.
-Battery life for this phone given the technology is OK. I have to recharge once a night so long as I don't use BlueTooth or WiFi too often
-BlueTooth uses about 5% of my battery for every half hour I have it connected to my MS850 headset
-WiFi card uses about 10% of my battery for every half hour I am surfing the internet
-The Windows platform allows for very good multi-tasking
-I'm a UNIX/Linux fan but at least windows Mobile comes with Word/Excel so you can appease your mgmt team
-You can use .NET and Java apps (games and programs)
-Have to reboot the device on occasion because memory does not get freed up as it should
-After closing applications, they aren't actually closed, you have to shut them down in Memory->Running Programs
-Sound quality actually exceeded my expectations
-Bluetooth connections have been extremely stable
-I live in rural Northern California and have not had any problems with dropped calls or having bad reception. It seems to have the same reception as my Motorola V551.

(More customer reviews)I must confess this is one of the worst items I have purchased in my life. I am sure, this particular unit was faulty the day it left the factory. I got this device on Feb 16, 2009 and uptil today (Feb 27), it has never booted properly. It gets held up midway and then no button works. If I keep fondling with its buttons during booting, it boots up. After booting up when it goes into standby mode after 1 minute, it again freezes. Moreover, if I put any MicroSD card, it never boots up even after playing around with the buttons. I understand its OS is corrupted or malfunctioned. I have tried to get the updates from HP web site, but nothing seems to work. I am highly disgusted and feel like tossing it out of the window. But alas, I have spent $400 on it.
To top it all the Customer service is downright incompetent and negligent. Some 10 days have passed since I e-mail the HP people and have still not received a single reply. Telephonic conversation with some expatriat having a peculiar non-American accent is absolutely useless. I can't understand what he says.
Since I live in Pakistan, it seems I am stuck with this Lemon. HP Chat troubleshooting only tells me to send it back to the US. Actually I bought this online, shipped it to my friends address in MI. He travelled to Pakistan and I got the device.
I have gone to various discussion forums on the web and have found these problems are also faced by some other customers too. VERY POOR QUALITY CONTROL OF HP. FORGET ABOUT CUSTOMER SUPPORT IN THE US.

(More customer reviews)For those who want the productivity features of a Blackberry with the power of Windows Mobile, here's the device. Here's the good, and the bad in a nutshell.
The Good:
1. Size, weight. This device is the same width as a Blackberry curve, and just slightly longer. Fits nicely in a pocket. Also, it's not too heavy.
2. Excellent Keyboard - Windows Mobile works excellently with an exposed keyboard. Dial numbers quickly, write emails, even filter your music library quickly by typing letters.
3. Plethora of features - Wifi, BT, GPS, a lot of customizable buttons, volume control buttons, and scroll wheel. Gps works well (tried it with TomTom 6) and WIFI and BT both performed well.
4. Speed - The device is snappy. Coming from the AT&T Tilt, it was a welcome experience to have a quick device again.
5. Battery - At 1900 mAH who can ask for more?!
The Bad:
1. Phone call volume is low compared to most other devices I've used
2. Too few backlight/brightness options. The middle setting is too bright, the lower is too low.
In summary, if you need to write and respond to emails 40% of the time or more, then this is the device to get. You sacrifice screen size for more portability and productivity. (Note that you don't sacrifice resolution -the screen is smaller, but the resolution is still 320x240)

After using the device for several days, there seems to be an issue with power drain/battery life. The PDA seems to drop roughly 5% of battery every hour with no use, and only AS Push active. With moderate use, the device seems to lose roughly 10-13% per hour use. Using the device the same way as I use my Tilt, wheras with the til I got roughly 12-14 hours of use, with the HP I get roughly 6-8.
Also, I'm experiencing another strange occurence. Using my 6GB microSDHC card, the device seems to lose its connection to the card when I turn it on, every so often. I'm looking into both of these issues.

HP iPAQ h6315 - Smartphone - GSM - QWERTY / touch screen - Windows Mobile - T-Mobile Review

(More customer reviews)I finally got tired of always having both my pockets filled with my h1945 and Sony-Ericsson T610. I've been using the two of these together for a few months, and when I read a little about the h6315 it intriged me. I researched it more and finally decided to buy one. I'm already a T-Mobile customer, so it was just an extra 20$ a month to add the unlimited GPRS (Internet over the cell network). I've had it for about a week, and here are my thoughts.
When researching the device, I found it impossible to find the speed of the processor. Here's why: it's 168mhz. You're thinking "Good Lord, that's slow!" -- but what it really means is AMAZING battery life (I am talking unbelievable). So your first choice is between a fast PDA, or the ability to use it unrestrained for a couple days without having to charge it. The only place I've noticed slow performance is with video (which is nigh-unwatchable) -- other than that, it's performed fine. It was no sweat, I don't really ever use my iPAQ for video. MP3s played fine when you keep your other activities undemanding. The biggest problem with the slow processor is lock-ups. From normal use (I'm not a super power-user, I'd bet) I had to reset the device with my stylus about 3 times a day when it would lock up.
I focus on the speed so much as it was the biggest on-the-fence deciding factor for me when I was looking into buying the 6315. Everything else works flawlessly; The reception is good (better than my T610, that's for sure), sound quality is good (yes, the speaker is quiet because its located on the back of the unit), the screen quality is great (Looks great using the thing at noon on a sunny day in the middle of a field), bluetooth works fine, the wi-fi is very good (with no delay for picking up networks) -- So, the lockups being the only thing that bother me (and like I said -- decide between speed and battery life now), I think this PDA is perfect for me. Resetting it is no problem if it locks up.
