(More customer reviews)The product works fine on Vista and the connection manager software (at&t communication manager) does not interfere with other software. Connection to the network is relatively smooth compared to CDMA (= Sprint).
However, I would like to see much more improvements regarding to the depth of 3G coverage of AT&T. As I did trials of Sprint, I have to say that the depth of coverage of 3G by At&T is not better than Sprint at present. They do cover the area they disclosed on their web site, but probably the no of base stations are relatively limited and the reception is very light in many areas although the weak 3G signal CAN be received. Economic situation is no good and the network investment can be easily reduced under the current condition, but we need to see stronger reception of 3G to justify the expensive monthly charge. Otherwise, the current EDGE network seems to be providing very similar network speed and capability. There is no strong economic reason to buy and pay expensive monthly fees for 3G service.

AT&T USBConnect Mercury Broadband USB Modem (AT&T) Review

(More customer reviews)First off, in the interest of full disclosure: this is the only device of this type I have owned. In the past, I've tethered to my Blackberry/Motorola, but that's a different beast entirely. So, my point is, this review reflects my experience with this device vs. my expectations, not a comparison with other, similar devices.
The Mercury is substantially faster than I anticipated; much faster than tethering through a phone. It will be nowhere near as fast as your cable modem of FIOS, nor as fast as your DSL ... but it will be substantially faster than dial up, always-on, and plenty quick enough for web, email, chat/IM, and such. It is reliable, extremely well-built/durable, and easy to use. However, I did have some problems initially, so let me share my experiences and fixes, as they seem to be related to those some reviewers are noting.
1) Go to Sierra Wireless's website, and download their "3G Watcher" application. It works much better than the "AT&T Communications Manager" that ships with the device (if you buy it from AT&T). This is the first solution that AT&T Tech Support suggested when I called with problems.
2) Be sure you know how much bandwidth you're using. My experience: when I was suffering random disconnects, it was because the service was kicking me because I was saturating the link. Why? Update managers, malware ... you name it. Be sure you turn automatic updates for everything OFF ... for Java, for Google, expecially for Windows ... for anything that might want to download stuff in the background. (Do your updates at home or some such where you have a true broadband connection.) Similarly, ensure that your machine is clean of adware, malware, virii, etc. These often generate significant net traffic as well.
Taking care of these will also keep you from getting random disconnects, it will help prevent you from hitting your monthly transfer limit.
5GB/mo is a *lot* for checking email, surfing the web, etc. I haven't gone over yet ... but I've come close, when I spent several days downloading software all day, after a new system install. If you want to download or stream movies, lots of music, or lots of software ... 5GB might be tight. If you want to check email, surf the web, etc., it should be plenty.
Once I took care of 1 and 2, I have had not a single problem ... I love it. The onboard micro sdhc reader is a huge bonus ... I installed portable versions of FireFox, Thunderbird, Pidgin, an a couple of other network utilities, so as long as I have the modem, I have the tools I need. The card also has a port for an external antennae, which is nice ... I'm thinking of buying one, because my signal in my office is so-so.
So, in short: ensure that you're managing your bandwidth usage carefully, including background/automatic downloads, ensure that your intended application is appropriate for the device, and be sure your expectations are reasonable ... and I believe that you'll be very happy with the device and the service.
UPDATE
I forgot to mention ... when I bought this item in an AT&T store, I had it working on my HP Mini netbook running Ubuntu Linux before the sales guy had run up the sale. It Just Worked.

AT&T Quicksilver USB Connect Card (AT&T) Review

(More customer reviews)Just got a new Apple Macbook Air version 2, and wanted to be really really flexible when traveling, so I added this new USB 3G card to the mix. The card is only a few weeks old at this time, and so the Mac drivers have to be downloaded directly from the manufacturer's website, as AT&T only includes the Windows drivers in the package. I can understand in the rush to get the card out they probably focused on the more widely used windows drivers, and I had no problem downloading the latest mac driver and instruction sheet from the manufacturer's website.
I did run into 2 stumbling blocks. First this thing is bigger in real life than the picture would make it seem. I thought it would be more like my small USB memory cards in size, and so when I saw it for the 1st time at the AT&T store I was a little surprised how big it is. In fact it's too bulky to fit into my Macbook Air's USB Port - there is just not enough clearance, so I had to buy a USB extension cable, which actually kind of worked out ok because I can put it nearer the window and away from the computer for better 3G reception.
The other stumbling block was a misleading direction in the otherwise very clear installation manual to leave the "APN" field blank on the Mac software. I wasn't able to connect even though everything looked good to me and the AT&T tech on the phone until he asked what the APN was set to. Turns out for AT&T, they use "isp.cingular" in all lower case with no user-name or password as the APN for all the data connect cards. Once I set that up I was working fine, with very decent 3G speeds.
So it seems to work fine so far after a few days of use now, and I finally have that go anywhere laptop experience I was always wishing for.

Since city-wide WiFi seems to piss off the state gov's and we will never get it, what options are there? Well you pretty much are left with getting raped by your cell phone carrier for a 3G data card for your laptop. I have AT&T so I started with the Sierra Wireless 875U card which was HSDPA, and then the day after I got it, they came out with the 881U which is HSUPA. I now have the 881U, because it has better throughput. I got the USB one so I could use it with any of my laptops. Aside from the outrageous price AT&T charges for data, the device is really handy. As long as you are in range of 3G, if you are not, I wouldn't waste your time, unless you like dial up type speeds. Oh one other issue I have with it is, since I mainly use it on my MacBook so it blocks both USB ports. This can be resolved with a USB extension cable, but that's kind of a pain. To make up for that though, the card does fit into the USB port on my MacBook Air!

this one is pretty basic on spec, however, it works alot better as modem, the voice clarity is fantastic, very good 2G and 3G reception
this phone uses new microUSB connection, however, you can use bluetooth instead of that for sync and file transfer
the audio player is OK, can use microSD-HC without problem, but the memory card is not hot-swappable (it's under battery)
now T-Mobile starts to roll out 3G service, this phone is pretty ideal for modem usage

basic spec (but this is the best basic 3G phone)
