Consider my rating 4 1/2 stars.
I had been looking at some of the new Sony Ericsson small clam shell phones so when this one came up on "Today's Deal", just over a month ago, for $139.95 unlocked US version I jumped on it. I think it sold out in a half hour. Being a man, often the only pockets I have are pants pockets and I wanted a phone I could comfortably fit in my front pants pocket. I also wanted a clam shell design, mainly to protect the screen while the phone was in my pocket. I'm not big on protective accessories, want to carry the phone and thats it. It needs to be small enough that I could forget its there and not make a big bulge.
The closed 3 inch length(not including the bevel angle which adds about half an inch) is exactly what I was looking for. The given width and thickness are actually incorrect, the width is 1 3/4" and the thickness is 5/8". My RAZR was a little bulkier than I liked and even the people that I have my service with remarked how they liked that the Z555 was smaller than the RAZR. I also like the distinctly individual key design, you know what you're pushing. Its a shame Amazon does not have a picture of the keys but the "try the phone" link on the Sony Ericsson site has a nice picture of the open phone. CNET also has a picture of the open phone and they also show it in some one's hand although they have small hands. I would consider my hands average size for a man and the phone is smaller in my hand. I have no problem with the sound quality, its as good or better than my previous phone. A very minor complaint is the screen size could have been bigger, there is plenty of room for a larger screen, but is one of the reasons I suspect there will be a second generation smaller case design that the screen will be the same size as now but fill up a smaller design. I mostly use it as a phone so the small screen is not an issue for me. The glossy black front does show fingerprint smudges easily(I'm guessing that is something that might be changed if there is a redesign). The grab, slip in my pocket and go ability of this phone is perfect for me.
I really think a phone that men can comfortably and unobtrusively fit in a pants pocket without need of a case or protectors is going to be the trend for the phone that many men will want. I can see where manufacturers also go for a more durable design, similar to what Olympus is doing with their Stylus cameras. Could see a second generation of this phone that would be smaller without sacrificing anything this phone has. The screen has plenty of room in the margins so it could definitely fit in a smaller package. Even the keys could give up some space in the width. The open length is a little over 6 1/2 inches and I could see it coming down to a little over five inches easily. Probably even be thinner.
I normally don't write reviews so soon after my purchase so I will revise it if I have any problems in the future but one of the reasons I bought this phone was the Sony name. I have always been happy with the quality and durability of Sony purchases in the past and don't anticipate any problems with my Z555. If there is going to be a second generation that is smaller then I would wait for that but as of this time I am not aware that there will be. This phone is a recommended buy, especially if you're a man looking for the same thing I was.

Make a big style statement with the unlocked Sony Ericsson Z555a GSM phone in Diamond Black, which is designed to reflect your look and attract attention. This elegant clamshell phone features beveled diamond shapes on the cover that reflect light, especially when you flick the phone using the integrated Gesture Controls to mute phone calls or snooze the alarm clock. It also features a 1.3-megapixel still camera, Bluetooth connectivity for handsfree communication and stereo music streaming, an FM radio, digital audio player, Memory Stick Micro (M2) expansion, web browser with RSS feeds, and up to 7 hours of talk time.
This U.S. version of the unlocked Sony Ericsson Z555a can be used with a GSM network service provider and it provides tri-band connectivity (850 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz). It does not come with a SIM card, and it requires that you provide a SIM card for usage with your selected service provider. This phone comes with a one-year warranty from a third party provider.
Phone Features With a unique diamond reflective finish on the front, and sophisticated details, the Sony Ericsson Z555a truly reflects your personality. The front of the clamshell is beveled into diamond shapes of different sizes, with the individual facets reflecting light in a myriad of patterns. The outside display also shows you who is calling even without opening the clamshell. When it's in idle mode, the outside display remains discretely invisible.
On the inside you'll find a 1.9-inch LCD screen with a 176 x 220-pixel resolution with support for 262K colors. The colors and designs that appear within the phone's menu system and home screen can update automatically as the year goes by. Linked to the phone's calendar, the Z555a knows when it's time for that summer look to give way to the fall. It even saves something special for big events--like News Year's Eve.
The phone features a unique Gesture control that allows you to mute calls with a wave of your hands or snooze its alarm without having to interrupt what you're doing. When a call comes in, a simple movement of your hand back and forth over the phone mutes the ringtone. Similarly, sweep your hand over the phone when using it as your alarm clock to put it into snooze mode.
This phone provides Bluetooth version 2.0 wireless connectivity with EDR (enhanced data rate), and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, and audio/video remote control. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. You can connect your laptop (either via Bluetooth or wired USB) and enjoy dial-up networking--surf the Internet, send email, and access files from a server.
The phone has an internal 12 MB memory, which can be expanded via optional Memory Stick Micro (M2) media. You can store up to 1000 contact entries in the internal phonebook, which provides fields for five phone numbers, an email address, a web site URL, job title, company name, home and work address, and (most importantly) a birthday. It also provides support for caller groups and ringer/picture ID. It's compatible with polyphonic and MP3 ringtones.
The camera built into the clamshell's front shoots images in three resolution sizes--1.3 megapixels, VGA (640 x 480), and QVGA (320 x 240)--and it features a 4x digital zoom, two quality settings, white balance and brightness adjustments, multishot capabilities, and a night mode. While this phone provides a video player, the camera does not capture video clips. It also includes a digital music player that's compatible with MP3 and AAC audio file formats as well as a built-in FM radio with RDS, which displays the name of the currently playing song (when tuned to compatible radio stations).
Support is built in for sending and receiving pictures, text, graphics, and sound via MMS messages. When used in combination with the phone's built-in still and video camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging possibilities. The phone also ships with a built-in email client with support for POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP protocols, while the included Access NetFront Web browser allows you to surf full HTML web sites. Push email is also supported, allowing you to have instant email on your mobile phone, just like on your home computer. Messages are sent directly to your phone as soon as they arrive. T9 text entry, a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit--a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.
Other features include:
Flight mode allows you to safely use the non-wireless functions of this phone (such as music, games, or organizer functions) on an airplane during flight
Organizational tools: calendar, calculator, alarm clock, tasks, timer, notes, stopwatch
